We've been using Potassium Chloride since 2008 in our Fleck 7000 32,000 and yes it is much more expensive! There have been zero clogs maybe due to the fact that we clean the brine tank annually. The Softener is now 14 years old and running flawlessly. The septic system has been thanking us as has the plant life outside. Dumping sodium brine outside or in a septic tank is absolutely the worst thing!

But yet, 30,000,000 homes in North America do it without any issues whatsoever

Using Salt Pellets, and after watching several of your videos and concerned I had a salt block upon finding the brine tank half full of water, I’ve used a broom handle to stir the salt. I now have a slurry of salt. Should I be concerned? I’ve followed your troubleshooting shoot steps and the injector nozzle is clear. Thanks!
@water_estore9 ай бұрын
Good question. If you don't remove that slurry you run the risk of getting it sucked up into the injetcor, but removing it is a pain. You could regenerate the water softener more often and hopefully it will clear up by itself.

I live in eastern Pennsylvania and have a Rheem water softener. Around here l can only get diamond crystal salt in pellets. Is this a good salt to use. I was using the crystals but this caused a lot of dirt and smells in the water. Also the plumber connected the backwash tube drain directly to the 3" sanitary line with no air gap. I am in the process of putting in a 1-1/2" P trap with an air gap for this line. There is also Morton salt pellets but hard to find in stores in my area.

I have an 18 y/o clack WS1 head and salt tank that I bought new and until recently it worked very well (but that's another story that I am trouble shooting its excess use of water and high water bill). When I bought it the supplier's written notes said: "I strongly suggest the use of solar crystal salt rather than potassium chloride." ( I know the difference between sodium and potassium chloride and uses.) I always presumed that meant not to use salt pellets (like in the Morton salt pellets commonly sold at Home Depot in the Midwest). I used Morton salt pellets in my sears water softener I had 20+ years ago I commonly developed a salt bridge at least 1 or 2 times a year, so that also fed my apprehension - and I only filled its tank to 1/2. Do you suggest I switch over to salt pellets and not fill the salt tank over 1/2 full at a time?
@water_estore10 ай бұрын
Yes, that is the best solution. I think the comment had more to do with what specifically not to use as opposed to what to use.
@dougwickland330310 ай бұрын
Thanks - I will try switching to pellets as you suggest. I have a unrelated questions that I will appreciate your expert opinion on: My home water use has increased significantly the past 3 months (compared to same periods last year). We cannot find any other leaks in the home. Can bad valves, pistons, or other water softener components contribute to greater water usage? I am not seen any obvious external leaks or more frequent regens. @@water_estore

The other great thing about pellet salt is that after a while, it turns into a sludge at the bottom of a brine tank that doesn't get dissolved. Which you have to dig out by hand because it because it becomes a solid mass.

This only happens if you overfill it. At least it is pure salt and is free from the residual dirt that rock salt contains.

It depend on a number of factors like if you have iron in your water or are on a chlorinated water supply. Best bet is to have your water tested for hardness after the softener. If the water is soft you don't need to repalce the resin.

I'm asking out of curiosity I want to state that in advance before what I'm going to say do you think that it matters the area that you live in depending on what kind of water you have because I'm a water softener technician and in my experience I've seen the pellets become a mashed potato consistency and clog up the brine tube more times than I can count and it's become a huge issue emptying theses pots out and cleaning them but on the contrary I'm aware crystal salt has more impurities but I don't see as much clogging in the pot itself
