The shiny rates in this game can somewhat make canonical sense too, considering this is before humans intentionally sought Pokémon out. So naturally there was more shiny Pokémon in the wild back then. Just a random thought I've had.

That's actually not a bad theory considering I've gotten more shiny Pokemon in this game than my entire career with all the others. almost a hundred shinies in about the span of a week. I'm quite happy with it and I'm saving them for other games maybe.

I think the reason we see way more shinies is because we don't have to go into a battle to see if it's shiny. In the past, you'd spend 30 seconds getting into a battle to see if it's shiny, then ending the battle. 1/4096 seems like a big number then. In this game, you can see a dozen Pokemon in that same 30 seconds (using 12 as an example). Now, 12/4096 is more like 1/341every 30 seconds. This is the same reason why shiny hunting in horde battles seemed really fast in Gen 6.

Man…I got screwed out of a female combed on a new play through. I got to the area to the left of where you fight Kleavor. After catching the scyther there I hopped on wyrdeer and ran up a hill. Never got the shiny animation or sound effects and I ran passed a shiny female combee that ran away because I startled it.

My favorite thing is just loading into a region and doing a full fly through just to see what’s going on and see if there is anything cool before I do whatever quest stuff or whatever I’m there for. I think when that happens it is just a guaranteed capture but I'm not sure that it's a crit cap

That's not a critical capture. Use ultra ball against a bunch of pokemon just outside the first camp in obsidian field and you will get that small bounce 99% of the time. It just means that you're guaranteed to catch it. It probably means the random number you rolled when you threw the ball was much higher than what was necessary to capture. If it bounces high, it means prepare because it can break out.

Yeah not crit just means the factors for catching the Pokémon, i.e. Ball type, Pokémon level, back shot, were overkill

Not a crit, just the highest chance it's a catch. Get some ultra balls and go to the bidoofs outside of the first came in obsidian and every one of them will do the short hop

The multiple catching mechanics are such an improvement in this game over any previous pokemon game. The shinies being a bit more common (if you do it right) is nice for busy folks who want the experience, but never had the time to hard-grind. Now even the hardcore grinders can go for living shiny alpha dex, and casuals like me can enjoy it too :D

Not sure if anyone has touched on this, but the steep hills that slow down the character can be quickly scaled by pulling the aim trigger to ready a throw... doesn't work on every hill but a lot of them as long as they aren't too steep

If you go into battle it pauses the timer, however, it also allows time to pass and weather to change, so instead of possibly losing a distortion, you should battle a pokemon until the weather changes from the three mentioned.

Austin, one thing you can do during the bad weather types is to enter a battle with a Pokémon before the game "checks" for a distortion. This effectively pauses the timer. You then wait until the weather changes in real time during the battle, and leave the battle from there. That way you don't have to reset the entire timer and can advance toward the higher odds checks.

I want to add on to this with something you need to be very careful about when hunting the common spawns in distortions while on steep terrain. The game has trouble starting battles when one or both mons are on a cliffside/ledge. You may be standing smack in the middle of both mons, but if one, such as your own when you send it into battle, spawns on the vertical part of the cliff/ledge, the game will treat it as if you are too far away to battle. I lost a shiny Ursaring to this. I was picking up some items at the very edge of a distortion zone which happened to be on a high ledge when the Ursaring spawned and it noticed me immediately, so I tried to send out a pokemon to lock it in place. I tried this three times. The first time, my pokemon picked up an item in front of me instead of starting the battle. The second time the battle tried to start but my mon was halfway down the cliff and battle failed. The third time I tried to send out my mon closer and I stood directly in between both mons, basically touching the Ursaring, but the battle failed again and it despawned.

This also happens with different things. I hunted for elektrode and the 2 pokemon were standing in front of a stone pillar and i was standing behind it. It also cancelled the fight even tho i was 2 m away

They also need to fix some battles in general, when throwing out a Pokémon it can happen randomly and one of the best examples is with quelling Avalugg where you have to throw the Pokémon at him not near him which caused me to not finish it as fast as I could! I’ve had it happen with some alphas, Ik it’s intentional but it’s still really annoying when trying to battle a Pokémon so you don’t get blacked out from when they hurt you

I want to quick share a few of my shiny stories. So I was at a mass outbreak for Shinx. Shiny pops up, I got it and two other shinxs are in balls waiting to see if I get them and do. Two more Shinx spawn in and the second is also shiny. The second time was for Aipom, while advancing the mass outbreak, twice A natural Shiny Aipom showed up and I was like.. “While, I done with this ‘mon.” Same thing happened when I was looking for a Wurmple in a Mass Outbreak. I Love this game so much.

Yeah, I learned this the hard way. Found a shiny Toxicroak on the inside of a not-yet activated Space-Time Distortion, and it despawned before I could catch it because the S-TD formed (I hate that it shortens to that)

Another good way of doing the fly by method is after you soft reset after a outbreak. once your done with the outbreak and go to soft reset instead of going straight back to jubilfe do the fly around method like Austin says just avoid your current outbreak by plugging a flag at it and I found a lot of shinys do this

Also there’s a huge glitch with the survival charms that are supposed to protect you from fainting, you lose them and you still faint even if you have them, and then the critical health sound plays while you are in the menu reviewing the items you lost.

Austin, great stuff as usual my guy. Something weird happened yesterday when I was distortion hunting, after I did my "full check" of the map, on my way to a distortion I found a shiny. It wasn't in a distortion area so it wasn't a new spawn. I started asking myself if distortions reset the map like a trip to Jubilife. Now its absolutely possible I just missed it in my full check, just wondering if anyone else had something similar happen.

I caught Shiny Luxray, Paras, Togetic, and Hisuian Zorua completely by chance, and then also caught Octillery, Gastly, Haunter, and Starly via Space-time distortions/mass outbreaks. Hisuian Zorua is absolutely stunning.

Today has been crazy, caught 5 random shinies trying to get the full Pokédex for the Pokémon I like and haven’t even got Emo Sneasal yet. Garydos, Growlithe, Pikachu, Duskclops and Chansey! This game is amazing!

just a friendly tip if u have the bad weather u can sit in a battle the weather can pass by and timer is paused so u dont need to reset ur space time timer and if u open ur map u can zoom in by ur distortion and see the timer of it of when it will start or finish it will have a small circle forming around the distortion
