I’ve had to use this method several times because I prefer quilts with bright colors on a light background. I’ve always used a bath tub and I have a spray nozzle on the shower head. The spray nozzle works great during the rinse phase. Longest I’ve spent doing this is three days….but it works!

I had to used this process on a completed quilt. It took about 6-7 hours and a few tubs of hot water, but all of the colour was only where it was supposed to! Thank you for sharing

I worked in a fabric store for 30 years, and I learned early on, to always prewash my fabric. A lot of times, there were all kinds of “things “ - both living and dead- wrapped up in the fabric. Thanks for this episode !

I knew this technique from doing tie dye, but never thought it could be useful in a sewing type situation! Thanks for the 💡 moment!

I can’t thank you enough for your advice on this. I have a quilted Christmas pillow cover that, after two years, was beginning to need cleaning. I machine washed it along with a few Christmas table runners, using a color catcher. Bleeding! Washed it again with another color catcher. No change. I had viewed another tutorial that advised only cold water with the Dawn detergent, but I got poor results with that. I tried your hot water method, and I could see the bleeded areas disappear while I watched! I was so happy! Thank you so much for your very clear advice, especially your demonstration on how to do it!

Well, this really did help a printed cotton poplin garment of mine that had bad stains from dye bleeding. Thank you!

For lack of a tub, I use a rectangular storage tub in my shower. I am still working on a quilt on which the black bled all over to leave peach cottons gray. . . . Thank heavens for Costco-sized containers of Dawn!!

Thank you for saving me from heartbreak! I just finished a quilt that will be a bridal shower gift and even though I used two Carbona Color Grabbers, some of the dark colors bled into the white background. I don’t have any Dawn Ultra but I have Palmolive Oxy dish detergent. It worked!! Now I can finish up and wrap the gift knowing there aren’t any blotches of color where they shouldn’t be.

It worked Kim! I made a table runner with red leaves on a cream background and some of the red bled when I was pressing seams (with steam). I had quilted and bound it then tried your technique. I was pretty worried when my water turned quite red, but did 3 hot water/ dawn soaks then a couple cold water rinses and it came out perfect! Thank you!

Thanks for this video! I have a quilt with blue bleed and I have washed it several times with color catchers and it’s still there although some better. I may be too late since I have already washed 3 times, but it is worth a try! Can’t hurt anymore than already is. I swore off plain white fabric after the blue bleed. Maybe I can go back to white background again! ❤

I just purchased a red fabric and plan on adding it to a quilt with other fabric. I wanted to wash it with Retayne to prevent bleeding and preventing is easier than fiddling with bleeding or synthrapol…..my question is must I wash all my other fabric that will go in same quilt?

If you wash one fabric, you should wash all of the others that you'll be using in this project. When you wash the cotton fabric, it will shrink a bit so if some if washed (preshrunk) and others aren't, there may be a different look to the project when it is quilted. Having said that, I'm sure that the difference won't be that noticeable so the choice is really up to you. Oh boy, here come the quilt police!!! 🤣

When using rotayne or synthrapol, what factors determine which product you should use?

There is a great download from Rob Appell on these two products and you can find it at mansewing.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/retayne-synthrapol.pdf.

No, the top you see in the video has had the fabric bleed on it for several years. I'm so amazed at how easily this all came out!

So I was excited to get some professional hockey pants and did the usual oxyclean and laundry machine thing, except this time around the blue color bled and seeped onto the stripes. I'm devastated. I've never had this happen before but I think I left the pants in a too small a tub and for too many hours as well. When I poured the water out, it was blue instead of that dingy brownish water. So is there any way I can get the color out of the stripes? I was thinking maybe a color run remover or will this method work? Let me know if anyone has been through this or has a solution, thanks

Why can’t you use a color catchers before you wash? What kind is the best kind of color catcher to use?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts Жыл бұрын
You absolutely can do this. This particular video is to help to get out colour bleeding when you haven't already pre-washed your fabric (which would avoid that colour bleeding!). I like to use Shout colour catchers.

This is Dawn Ultra dish detergent. I'm not sure if other brands will work but you could try. Check in the Description area beneath the video for an Amazon link (hopefully this will come through for you in Australia).
