Oh my gosh poor girl!! Worst two horse injuries I've had (besides a sore behind from falling off) were: one big boy pressed my leg up against the arena fence and skinned a half-dollar sized patch of skin off (through jeans) and left me with a deep scab for weeks, and another pulled her foot forward while I was picking it, and a tiny piece of hoof sticking out from the wall sliced my palm from the bottom to the top. Not too bad, either of them, but memorable. 😂

Another thing that I do in winter time, is I get a can of cooking spray, as our guys and gals are stalled overnight. Before they go out in the morning, I will spray the bottom of their hooves with the cooking spray. Have never had anyone come in at night with ice balls in their feet. And as cooking spray is oil based, thermos won't stick. And this is definitely something you want to watch out for, as it can stretch or tear ligaments and tendons because their feet aren't hitting the ground correctly. Best Regards from Ontario, Canada, Jenn.

For a horse that can’t pick up his feet because the snowballs are more extreme, take a long screwdriver and a hammer and drive the screwdriver from the rear of the hoof, at a downward angle, toward the toe. You will safely miss the frog and sole while breaking up the snowball. My old guy with arthritis had extreme ice snowballs and could hardly stand. I was able to clear the snowballs and he helped by shifting his feet as I wedged the ice out from under his hoof. Thank You Lord! Great idea!!

I love the little stories you add in. Not necessarily gory ones, but just in general. They make the videos fun and interesting. The one of the lady in the wheelchair who needed one last time to hug a horse made me cry like a baby.

I was having a lot of trouble with this a little over a month ago while I was taking care of a horse who belongs to a friend of my riding instructors. He was getting the nastiest balls of ice in his feet 😭 I felt so bad for him, they got packed so tight in his hooves. Thankle goodness I got them out eventually, it was tough to get the hoof pick under the ice to pry it up with a big ol wiggly horse!!

We used to do this all the time. Back in the 80's when I had a mule and a quarter horse ,before setting out in the snow we'd coat the soles with Vaseline. Worked for my buddy and me!

We use a non-stick cooking spray, but that would be way too expensive for all of your horses. What you could do, which we do when we have larger numbers, is, I keep a can, old coffee can, by the stove, and pour bacon grease into it, and use it on their hooves, it works for ice as well as a hoof conditioner :-)

Oh my word! When you said, 'come on over here', I almost got off my sofa! You have such authority in your voice! Scary! I was walking to work in the snow one day and my boots keep accumulating snow in the treads. It was so annoying. I never wore those boots in snow again. Can't imagine how irritating it must be for horses. Do you have to be trained in first aid for running an equestrian centre? Just curious 🤔

This is a daily task in the sticky, deep snow weather. Its a good idea to get the ice/snowballs out before they want into the barn or on concrete. Once they hit the hard concrete the snowballs turn into ice skates! They don't seem to be temperature sensitive to the cold on their hooves. Winter fun with horses!

The hoof pick really is the best way to remove ice balls. I try and use the all metal ones rather than the ones with the brush. Sometimes the ice is so packed it bends the other type. If I can’t pop it out with that I’ve used a rubber mallet to loosen the ball a bit.
@marysimmons4705
@marysimmons4705 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of special rubber plates that go in between the shoe and the hoof to help stop the build up but I agree it’s more slippery with shoes on and your method seems quicker and easier.

I was on my horse last year in a rutted frozen field. She developed ice balls packed in her feet. Was horrible because her feet hurt and I didn't realize how hard the ground was. The combination caused her to toss me off. Not buck, but just toss. It was when I hit that hard packed frozen sharp earth that I realized what a foolish thing I'd done. Was awful. Now I'm scared to ride on anything that will freeze her feet. I wonder what others do. I was not able to loosen the ice when I got home, was in so tight. Glad I didn't poke out my eye! :(

Oops...After the eye story don’t think any viewer will ever wield a hoof pick in the wrong direction. Now we need an easy fix for ice/fur balls on dogs’ feet. Know of person on cross-country skis who had to carry a Golden Retriever for several km.

What do you do if anything to help keep the soul of the foot hard during the winter and the moisture and mud from making the foot to soft when it’s mud season?

The more exercise my horses get, the healthier their feet are. Diet also plays a huge part in how their feet handle the elements. Healthy feet can adapt very well to weather conditions.

@lynette50
@lynette50 4 жыл бұрын
The lower leg is mostly tendon and bone, which resist the effects of cold much better than muscle. These are not energy-requiring tissues, in comparison with the rest of the body, the blood pumps through the feet quickly because of the horses weight, therefore it keeps the feet warm You should never trim tails or manes. Horses turn their rear ends to the wind and elements so the tails help protect the delicate bits of the horse. The mane does the same protecting the eyes and neck. The manes and tails also help protect from flies and insects.
