To me, It seems like there is a huge disconnect between people who ride horses but their motivation/inspiration or passion is about something other than the horse. Maybe it’s ribbons, maybe it’s a big prize, maybe it’s recognition. It’s just really nice to see someone using this platform to demonstrate/be a good role model anyone wanting to advance their horsemanship.

I love watching horses interact with each other. When two horses put their heads together and then one moves away letting out a squeal, I always wonder what was said to upset them. They don't seem to communicate vocally, and I've often wondered if they are reading each other's nerves and what their nerves are telling them. When you think about it, us humans many times operate somewhat the same about other people. We can get real cautious if someone doesn't look just right to us while walking towards them. We have our guard up even though we don't know a thing about that person. Maybe it's just that simple with horses. Maybe not too, lol!

@VersatileHorsemanship2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ohnah is from a reservation in North Dakota, so I wanter her to have a native american name. Ohnah means "fire on the prairie" in Lakota. For me it really depends on the horses. If they are pretty chill, I just put them together. I also have stalls where they can touch noses and get to know each other. That's usually really helpful if I have any concerns. But for the most part, you just step back and let them sort it out themselves.
@CactusCowgirl2 жыл бұрын
@@VersatileHorsemanship ooh that’s so cool! I love names that have meaning. Thanks!
@cattymajiv Жыл бұрын
@@CactusCowgirl I don't think she explained it very well at all. What she meant was that you keep them in seperate but adjoining stalls or pastures, preferably pastures but stalls are ok, for at least a week, preferably 2. But you do take them both out to handle them, spend time with them, groom them, or see the farrier or dentist, or whatever. If you only have one paddock or feild, you alternate which one is in and which is out, but make sure the majority of the time they are near enough to sniff and rub faces. Once you are sure they get along that way, and only then, you can put them in the same feild. And then too you keep your eye on them for a hour or two, or however long it takes for them to settle down. Even on the 2nd day you watch them more than you usually would. This the same thing you must do with cats and dogs. You keep your eye on them until they settle, and you feed them seperately for at least a few days. Once you start feeding them together, if you have one stealing the other's food, you will have to find an alternative. BUT, before you do any of the above, YOU HAVE TO FULLY QUARANTINE THE NEW HORSE for at least 3 weeks, or 21 days. You must do this with every new horse. I have grave concerns about how she rushed the process. I understand her reasoning, and for the most part I agree, but I think that bite might have been prevented by just adding the horses more slowly. I realize she is extremely busy with all those horses. But I would have made the time to do it more slowly. She also rushed through the process of answering you. It would be better not to answer at all than to give incomplete info like that, because it was clearly very misleading. She didn't even allow herself a second to think about how her few terse words would be interpreted by a person who only has 1 horse and has never had more. A person without her vast experience. And one who wants to prevent the kind of injury her poor mare had to endure. There are 3 areas where she gave wrong info or missed a point completely, which I noted above. You should probably go back over this and reread that part. The main parts of what I told you, about 1st doing quarantine, 2nd keeping them close enough to kiss each other, but with no ability to kick, then together in the paddock, but watched, especially regarding food. But you should NEVER believe ANYONE from a KZbin comment! Phone your vet and ask them. Please do this. There are tons of people on KZbin with horse channels, and half of them have no clue. Look at how she brushed you off with the quickest thing she could think of to say. Rely on the true professionals in your area, people who you can hold to account if something goes wrong. What if instead of a bad bite, the horse had received a bad kick in the head, or the ribs, maybe with a severe concussion, or broken face, or broken rib with punctured lung. It happens. Another channel has a video of their horse on the ground, unable to move. With that large number of horses the amount of energy that gets stirred up is enormous. So I would have gone more than twice as slow. But my point to you is, do not follow advice from KZbin. Do take note of the steps I gave you, and check them with your vet. Check everything with your equine vet, all the time. You will be fine that way.

It's hard to keep them straight. I'm sure I'll get to know them as I watch more. What's the purpose for having two herds? Do they just not get along? Or too many in one space is crowded? Also, I'm curious, when you put the shelters out, do you have to take typical weather patterns into account? For example, if the wind often blows from east to west, you place it facing west? I get wrapped up on little details, since I'm a city girl (with a country girl heart). 😁 thanks for sharing! 💕

Do regular size horses tend to think of the little guys as less than, putting them at a disadvantage when meeting? Do horses and mules perceive the difference between breeds? species? Is how they decide who's first, second, etc. have more to do with personality? In both class settings I was in I was assigned numb.Two. In the first class the instructor horse was number one. In my second class the number one horse was a sixteen hand stallion who was given to the only boy in class. It was sad though cause he wasn't very experienced. And my sweet, I mean naughty little mare was a handful but if you showed her confidence she gave you whatever you asked for!
