Thank you for having the courage to stand up to the price complainers. I know that inflation has pinched most of us but I'm also tired of the constant price complaints and comparisons to a decade or more ago. Great show as always

At Barley to Bottle in October: 11 Year First Fill Bourbon 6 Year Refill Sauternes 10 Year Refill Port 11 Year Refill Rum 11 Year Refill Sherry 12 Year First Fill Sherry The surprise of the bunch for me was the rum, which I don’t typically enjoy. My previous trip everything was a bit older… my final bottle was 13 or 14 years and I believe it was a combo of bourbon, refill sherry and first fill sherry.

Great whisky line up gents. Although I haven't tried all of the releases from this episode my whisky of the year in Springbank 21, and it's a really shame that because of some losers we have to pay for it ~ £380,- instead of £270,-. Really good episode and nice conversation. Gents - call any of your guests once again or bring new ones it's all the same to me, I'm personally enjoying every episode that I'm watching and thank you for that. Happy new year!

I don’t think the complaints are personally aimed at Glengoyne or the Teapot Dram, but more a general fatigue and disappointment at the whisky industry. Prices continue to rise, people are being asked to pay more (and have been continually since Covid), and there is a perception that a lot of distillery’s are pulling people’s pants down with regards to their pricing and the quality they are providing. The Teapot Dram might be great, but for a lot of consumers it’s the antithesis of an increasingly greedy industry - NAS, continual price rises, perceived drop in quality (batch 10 may have been great, but 9 wasn’t - is 140quid a fair price to take that chance?), and Glengoyne have been criticized by whisky drinkers for a reduction in quality (18 & 21), and a big increase in pricing (25 & 30 especially). The whole industry is at it, and I think consumers are getting a little weary of the industry’s shit to be honest. Like how many bottles can the average drinker buy and be expected to keep buying? How much outlay is acceptable for people increasingly feeling the squeeze? At some point people look elsewhere - you guys have even hinted at it yourselves when discussing ‘malternatives’ and how reasonably priced they are, despite age, compared to the egregious, exponential price increases associated with age statements in whisky. And I say this as someone who can comfortably afford the Teapot Dram - to me it’s a minor outlay, but to some I know it isn’t. For me I can understand why people have been critical of it, because I don’t like the lack of age statement either. It seems disingenuous, especially at that price. Just give the information about the bottle so people can have all the information before deciding, making it a NAS and then charging 140quid is just opening yourself up for criticism whether or not the quality justifies it. I would also say that the average whisky drinkers budget is significantly less than Ian’s and Jake’s, so proclaiming anybody aggrieved at the 140quid price tag as “cheap” comes across as a bit tone deaf. I like the passion, but I don’t think painting genuine criticisms as bitterness or cheapness is helpful. Looking at how the industry continues to gouge prices, I think honest discussion about how the industry is operating and how it is pricing its product is important. Final note: I paid significantly more than 140quid for the teapot dram batch 8, because I live in a country that basically doesn’t get it thus, when you find it, chunky mark up. Really good bottle, really enjoyed it, no issues with the quality of that batch, but no age statement (or any information about it at all) is asking for a leap of faith that, at that price, few will be willing to make. I think that is the big issue, more than the quality itself. Interesting episode, slainte Bottle of the year: Ballechin 19yr Manzanilla Cask

Another banger of an episode guys. Nice to hear your thoughts on bottles that I've got open too! The White Oak is a lovely revelation and cheap to repurchase once gone. The stocking Filler is such as nice easy sipper and was lovely to have all over Christmas. The Signatory secret M was something special too. Got a springbank 21 from 2015 yet to open too. Bought and sank a bottle of the Glenallachie 9 oloroso so might need to try the fino now as well. You should try the Whisky Exchange old fashioned Christmas whisky for 2024 - a 15 year old speyside at 54.8%. Happy New Year!!

Happy new year! Re high-priced bottles: I think we whisky geeks lose sight of the fact that for most people, a bottle of whisky is something you buy once a year, probably as a gift. Put it that way, £150 for an 18 year old whisky perhaps isn't so outrageous, and perhaps we can't expect everything to be presented at £50-or-less-shipping-included just because we have to have every release on our personal shelving unit. Perhaps some whisky was meant to be bought between friends, or something you go out and try at a bar.

On the pricing I agree about voting with your wallet and letting the market decide. Yes prices are going up but the space is super competitive and people will just not buy it if they don't deem it worthy. Good example of a brand that went out too expensive: Arbike. Lovely liquid in my eyes but launched over £100. Now down to £75.

Bloody great episode. Not finished it yet but needed to comment. 😂. I love when Posh goes off on one about Macallan. The cock ring. So funny. There absolutely has to be a Springbank blend your own faceoff epsisode. The craic would be amazing and I agree with Stevie, all 8 bottles 2 each. Would be so good. Make it happen!! Regards to Springbank and the auction flippers, I think it’s the reasons that people feel aggrieved towards the distillery. I’ve never been lucky enough to get a bottle from a shop or website. Everything I’ve had has been a sample from someone or an auction. And you see when there’s been a release the auctions are flooded with it. So much Longrow red on there. It spoils it for so many people that want to drink it and creates a false impression of the distillery who actually sell it at an extremely fair price. Rant over.

Just a quick add on. Current SWA auction. 30 Springbank 10yr and 57 cask strength 12yr. Piss take.

They can’t help that the flippers exist sadly - but a fair point! Let’s try and make the episode happen 🎉

@ Oh it was absolutely not a dig at Springbank or the auction sites. Was aimed at the flippers. It is what it is unfortunately. Absolutely that challenge needs to happen!!! Will be epic!! 😬 You’ll have to come up with a prize for the winner although bragging rights may be enough. 🤣
@mincey8084 күн бұрын
Fair play to Jake - he stands by his opinions doesn't he 🤣. £140 for a NAS is expensive but it's delicious and I don't feel like I've overpaid (unlike batch 9!). So where do the complaints lie? Maybe because we equate price with age statements and we're conditioned to directly link value to age. Just like we're conditioned to turn our nose up at chill filtering. Or in some way we think we're being cheated or the distillery is being disingenuous. But at the end of the day a product is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. And the time it took for batch 10 to sell out suggests people are being more considerate with how they spend now and maybe are still burnt by batch 9 (and who could blame them).

@TheWhiskyBloke6 күн бұрын
Jake is 100% correct. There are far too many Jealous people & haters who complain about pricing because their budget doesn't allow them to buy a £140.00 bottle.
@paintspot15096 күн бұрын
That's a little harsh. I would say the problem is that there is very strong competition at the £140 price point.
@hoodwiser76525 күн бұрын
@TheWhiskyBloke nobody is jealous over a 140quid bottle mate, like I get it’s out of some peoples budget, but nobody’s looking at a Teapot Dram and being like “curse these opulent bastards who can afford such whisky splendor”, 140quid really isn’t such a lavish amount of money in this day and age.
