I realise I'm here a year late, but trail running shoes with studs give extra grip on ice (mentioned in the video), and if it's really icy, check out Kahtoola Microspikes. They're like crampons but for running - metal spikes that you can strap on to the bottom of your running shoes for extra grip.

Real talk, I run down to -30’sC in Winnipeg and my biggest problem areas are cold bum post running (trying an insulated skirt this year), cuts on my eyelids from cold sub -30c (have tried ski goggles but they steam and ice up), and not feeling like you are getting water boarded by your buff (breathing holes are optimal). Also important to bring dry gloves for your cold walk back to your vehicle after you cool off too much hanging out with run friends post-run. Often I can’t rewarm myself (especially bum!) later in the night once I get home and need a heated blanket or warm shower. Typically to run at -20 to -30 I wear: merino longjohns, top and bottom, a pair of wind proof cross country ski pants, a second thermal layer and windproof later up top, wool socks, icebug shoes with carbide spikes, a merino buff or preferably icebreaker balaclava with hole for your nose, a wool toque over ear bags because my ears hurt if they get cold/windy, smart wool neck gaiter, and thinner gloves than you would imagine, my hands get too warm once I start running.

Great video! I live in Prince George, BC Canada and we certainly are running in the elements +/- 4 months out of the year. I picked up some good points from your video and was reassured on most others. I run with the Yaktrax Pro on a running shoe (Saucony Ride 7 gortex) having little grip. I find this gives the Yaktrax full surface area when in contact with the ice and snow. This provides excellent grip and I never have a close call. Call me crazy, but I much prefer winter running to summer running. Anyone else think the same??

I just started this year running in winter. One thing I've noticed is my heart rate is higher at the same pace and intensity that I run in the spring and summer? The other day, I felt fine running my long run (did 9.5 miles at about 12:30 pace) and didn't feel like I was pushing myself hard. I ran at a somewhat slow pace and could carry a conversation with short breaths here and there. I also felt fine temperature wise--I didn't feel too cold or too warm. I'm somewhat new to running and I don't know what to make of this? Any thoughts? By comparison, in the spring and summer, this same pace and intensity my hear rate is around 130. For this winter run, it had my average heart rate around 150 (with my max rate reaching 172).
