Karina, this is such a great lesson on fabric! I'm new to garment sewing and my fabric knowledge is sorely lacking. With the stay at home orders these past months I've been looking at fabric online and I'm so frustrated because I don't know what to look for and I can't touch any of it! Even the higher thread count cottons relax on the body, imagine the loosely woven... they’ll be pretty pants and look amazing on, for a while.

Just the mention of the crinkle rayon makes me wince. My daughter had a favorite skirt and blouse set (ready made). When I washed it (cold water, gentle wash) I was horrified to pull it out of the washer and see it a shrunken mess. I tried to block it with my hands, but it was a disaster. I’ve since found out that it can be steam ironed back to a semblance of former glory but not before it was thrown out. It did grow and bag as it was worn so my 2 daughters and I have steered completely clear of it. Great information in this series!

Tell me about it. In my teens I made a beautiful romper... wore it once, washed it and wow. It didn’t even fit my 5ft friend I tried to give it too. Lesson learnt and I’ve stayed away from it.

That't just what I've started doing and for exactly the same reason! Serging my fabrics as soon as I buy them and putting straight in the laundry - then I know if a fabric in my stash is serged it's because it's been washed!

Great series. The only pants I have made are leggings and pajama pants. The pajama pants were from a cotton flannel and the leggings, which I don't make skin tight, were from a poly/nylon/lycra blend fabric. My leggings are more like cigarette pants. They glide over the shape of my legs and have a little room in the knee. I don't like anything skin tight and that is good as I don't have the figure to wear anything that tight anymore!! LOL. Totally awesome! I make a lot of knit shorts. I just started making woven shorts again. Since I love linen…well I am making Linen tops, shorts and pants. I live in a hot climate so linen is year round here. No rule about not after Labor Day and not before Memorial Day. I use a lot of fabrics. Love your series. I just found your channel this year and I binge watch in order and take notes. It is ALL great!!! I must admit I have only been watching a few channels for about a year now. Thank you again.

Know what you mean about the PJ look with florals but I always squeeze out a top and not let tbe extra fabric go to waste. If I wear them together I tend to style them with a long line waterfall cotton lace sleeveless cardy to tone it all down. Great series.

Hi Karina, I made a pair of loose fitting pants in polyester viscose with a drawstring waist for an unplanned holiday break, so in a hurry. Loved them, wore them once and had totally forgotten to prewash the fabric in my hurry. The legs shrank 6” after the first wash. I could still get them on but couldn’t even make them Capri style because of the way the original pattern was cut. I cried. Still have them, love the fabric but haven’t figured out anything I could get out of the fabric yet, maybe one day. I will never forget to prewash fabric again though. Good tip to surge first to prevent fraying.

That striped fabric would definitely not look like pjs. The stripes give you many colors you can work with in a matching top, I thinks it’s classy fabric that in no way looks like pjs. I’d get a matching color blouse and see how classy it’d turn out, . I’d maybe use capri 13:07 pants. You’ll look fantastic and classy casual. I love to see it on you!

Viscose and rayon are the same. Depends on the country what it’s called :) For more structure, I like linen/viscose in the heavier variety :)

I loved all of your video sequence about making pull-on pants. Thank you! Do you think pattern companies could improve the way they give fabric suggestions on the pattern envelope? Maybe recommend the fabric weight or flowiness, for instance? What other characteristics could be listed so we make fewer mistakes in fabric choice? A pattern for slim-leg pull-on pants that I just bought (Simplicity 1165) recommends everything from gingham to jersey for this particular style. That seems all over the map to me.

I rarely use the big 4 pattern companies. They could improve on everything! I know indie brands are very specific in their fabric recommendations.

What a nice series you're putting out for us. I've made quite a few pull on wide elastic waist pants (the elastic just sewn on) in tropical or floral rayon because it is hot where I live. I made the mistake of making a pair out of a solid color rayon like that blue you held up and oh the wrinkles are so obvious. Now I want to try a couple of pair with the yoga waistband. Positive ease is what you use for woven fabrics, meaning that the finished garment measurement is larger than the body circumference at that particular point. So let’s say you choose size 12 for your hip width of 100cm and the final measurement of the garment is 112cm, then you have 12cm of positive ease. Which allows you to sit for example. Patterns for knit fabrics tend to use negative ease, meaning that the finished measurement of the garment tends to be smaller than your body measurement, so the fabric stretches and hugs your body. This prevents it from drooping down towards the floor, for example, making the garment look baggy and unflattering. Hope this helps.

[Just FYI I'm a quilter and always pre-wash ... especially since working for a retail fabric store and seeing all the chemicals fabrics are preserved with. Ick. Plus to get some of the color bleeding out. But that's just me!] Thanks for this series and this video ... you brought up so many important aspects of sewing pants and selecting fabrics. I’ve heard that a lot of quilters wash after sewing so that it shrinks and the stitching pops up more. I guess it’s personal preference and if quilted, I couldn’t cope with not washing 😄. I’d get 1/4 yard extra for rayon.

@@LiftingPinsandNeedles To each their own, as you say, Karina. A washed quilt looks used to me, and it's a quaint and lovely look, but not how I prefer to give a quilt, if you know what I mean. And I couldn't give a quilt with unwashed fabric to anyone ... they used to use formaldehyde to preserve fabrics. 🙀🙀🙀 Thanks for the yardage tip. 😻😻😻

I’ve been a quilter for decades and many quilters don’t prewash. Because there are so many precuts out there now- which you absolutely do not prewash ( they lose their shape and size )- you do not want to mix the two or your quilt will turn out wonky. Best not to unless you are certain you will be using yardage for the whole quilt. For clothing, definitely prewash cottons.😀

Could you make recommendations on pull-on dress pant?. I haven't sewed in a few years and fabrics must have changed as fabrics didn't use to shrink that much.

Polyester fabric does not shrink much at all. I was mainly talking about natural fibres here. Pull on dress pants? Any of these could be if the fabric is dressier. Bottom weight crepe suiting fabric would make any of these dressier.

No. I mean a full on wash. Like you’d wash your garment. If you tumble dry, that too.

The easy answer; no dryer because I don’t have one, but if I did and intended to dry the garments, I would. Though they’ll shrink :)

I have made pull up pants out of quilting cotton. I love them because cotton is natural, and linen is too expensive for me. Cotton or linen are the best for summer.

Do you have any suggestions for using threads with the different fabrics ? Should I use a rayon thread with cotton fabric, or, should i try to get the same kind of thread as the fabric I'm using. I use polyester thread for everything. It’s study and it will last. I’ve used cotton thread on occasion but only with wovens, never with knits.

Do you always use a preprinted pattern or do you also sec draft your own to fit your body. I’d lie to see s tutorial from you making a self drafted dress pattern from linen with pockets. That is what I’m aiming for in watching these videos. I’d love for you to do a follow along tutorial. Please consider it?

I don’t do self drafted patterns on the channel (even though I know how) because when I used to do that years ago, the videos got zero views. This is my livelihood and time after time this was confirmed. I use patterns and base my content around that. Also, in my community guidelines, one of the points there is that I can’t take video topic reviews. I’m a one woman team and cannot possible grant specific requests. If my content is not what you need, there are others on YT making sewing content too.

Thank you so much for this overview. I was wondering what you think about cotton sateen for a looser pull up pant? Because of the environmental impact of rayon and viscose I would rather not use them and linen can be soooo freaking expensive. but moreover linen tends to get baggy after a day wearing it and have to put it in the washing machine to get the shape back. I find this problematic as I don’t want to wash clothes before they are actually dirty as washing also has an environmental impact and is not good for the durability of the fabric. Hence, the need to make new pants from new fabric, which has to be produced, which also has an environmental impact (land use for monocrops and toxic dyeing) Another good thing about cotton sateen is that it tends to get used for bedding materials and is readily available for thrifting (to make a pants out of recycled bedding cotton sateen). To be honest, as a newbie in the sewing community, I’m a bit disappointed in the lack of discussion on environmental impacts 😳

About environmental impact of fabric, cotton also has its part in consuming excessive water for its production, taking between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons of water to make a single pair of jeans and up to 3,000 to make a T-shirt. While also using high levels of pesticides and toxic chemicals. I am well versed in all the topics you mention. Making the decisions on the fabrics you prefer is your own and making pants with cotton sateen is your choice. They will be stiff and structured. About having discussions on environmental impacts, it’s not my obligation to do so. It’s my choice. I do my best to be sustainable in all areas of my life (thrifting, reusing my clothes til they rip, using the least amount of fabric possible, being a vegetarian my whole life.... etc)

@@LiftingPinsandNeedles I seem to have touched a nerve here. I know about the use of water for cotton production, which is why I wanted to thrift it, rather than buying new fabric. As I can can get hold on thrifted cotton sateen, I was asking your advice on it, as I did not see it mentioned in your video. Moreover, my point on the lack of discussion on environment was pointed towards the sewing community as a whole, and certainly was not putting it up as some kind of obligation for you personally.

It does not mean I don’t care about the environment. You’ve chosen and area you want to focus on. I’ve chosen to sew.

Sorry, I live in Brazil and haven’t been to the US since 1992. I don’t shop there at all so have no way of recommending. A general sewing Facebook group might be more helpful.

I’m using a Pj pattern but for regular wear shorts.. I’ve got some linen I bought on sale and I’m wondering if it would be a good fit for shorts. Sounds like structurally yes now I just have to decide if I would wear dark red or dark green linen shorts and what to wear them with..

Yes I would but only it the fabric felt good on the skin :) not for tight pants.

The BIG problem with cotton lawn is that it's see-through! So by the time you've lined it, you've lost the light airiness of it anyway.

Hi Katrina, could you say something about warmer fabrics please. It's "summer here but still only 12 degrees! Have Simplicity 8378 it says "styled for kinits" but the photo doesn't look like jogging pants, It's similar to the pattern you used. I was thinking that if I made a size bigger I could use a stretch fabric.....What would you advise? Thanks

This video is about woven styles. I would never every make a pattern designed for knits with a woven. Even if sizing up. The drafting is different and the results are usually poor. Your pattern is for knit fabrics, I would use that.
