Nah, I just think that Luca should have explained why he didn't like the fragrance. Giving them a one liner makes his reviews a bit unreliable in my opinion.
@abritishguy83516 жыл бұрын
@@aaron_luke96 Possibly, if he meant it as a complete library. Having recently read his previous book on the same subject, my understanding is that it is substantially written as entertainment and that he wanted to avoid being boring or repetitive where possible. Also, reliability is a bit of an odd choice of word when talking about subjective opinions.

This just proves to me how personal fragrance reviews are. You cannot know if you will love a fragrance (or hate it) based solely on one person's opinion. That being said, a glowing review can draw attention to a lesser known brand/fragrance. I doubt his poor review of Black Opium will harm sales of that fragrance.

I’ve actually tested Club Design, (I ordered a sample set from The Zoo reading his review) and... unfortunately, on me it smells more like celery and rubber rather than honey and rubber. Also, there was a bizarre plasticky smell in Alaia that was off-putting to me. It makes me think Turin mostly admires “interesting” and unique fragrances, not necessarily wearable ones. And he doesn’t seem to like many oriental-style fragrances, which are my personal favorites. However, I have to agree with him on the over-saturation of the market with flankers and monotonous themes in most new releases. Plus I wasn’t a fan of Black Opium either. Overall, it seems I agree with him just as often as I disagree with him. In the end, the reviews are definitely entertaining!

What did you think of Space Wood ?? I am curious if I should buy samples or not...
@BriezyFragrance6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView Now, that one I actually liked quite a lot! It’s so unique and I agree with perfumer’s description - it’s modern and abstract. I can’t pick up on any one note (though my nose isn’t well-trained yet, so that could be part of it). Something about it reminds me of outer space, no idea why. Is it something I would wear often? Probably not... But I really enjoy smelling it. After I’m done testing my sample set, I’m happy to send them your way! They’re 8ml each, so there will be plenty left over! 😃

Really? that's very kind thank you! :)

You’re spot on Briezy. His old books definitely highlighted his rampage against oriental style scents. He’s also scrubbing off many linear scents. Which is not something we can easily conclude from test paper.

That's the problem when you smell too many things over too long of a time as a scent reviewer. You become jaded to the point of not being relatable to the average person in terms of your tastes or at least that can happen.

Or maybe he on a bunch of medications that his pheromones are so off that his body chemistry is totally wacked out? Where he picking up negative up on these very fragrances. Argh yes, I didn't take that in when reading it out... maybe Luca doesn't quite agree with it, maybe he does.. usually if they don't agree on a scent, they both give their own star ratings, so there's two votes.. otherwise I assume they think the same.

Thanks for the little insight into this book ☺️ Yeah, that’s exactly what I meant, he‘s got a memory of what a Concorde smells and the fragrance get‘s a five star review, the ones he has no (good) connection with are fails. How does that help anyone one of us? I think his valuation standards are questionable. Anyways, I ordered the book yesterday, I‘m just curious how my taste compares to his... even though I have no hope to own even one perfume which gets more than two stars from him 😊
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
he tests most just on a paper test strip... that's it, never wears most of them on skin, only the ones that impress him straight away on paper.
@MatterAndForm6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView Well, that explains a lot! Like if a literary critic would rate a book after just having read the first three lines of every page. I really can’t take this seriously. I think the book serves primarily entertainment purposes (that’s why I bought it), another reason why no perfumer who got a disastrous rating should be even bothered :)
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
I suppose to test every fragrance in that book, properly, on skin over different seasons.. would take forever, he's packing as much in as he can, so he's reduced to testing on strips for the most part.. The ones that impress him, he'll wear and give a slightly longer review... I get it, but like you say, it's not the most reliable. There's lots of perfume I've smelled on paper, that I wasn't impressed with.. And it was only after wearing them a few times, that I finally understood and appreciated them, which changed my whole perception on them. Which would have been missed if I had dismissed them straight away...
@MatterAndForm6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView Same here! Some of the fragrances I tend to like most in the end are those which I have to learn to appreciate over time. Same with music sometimes... if I like a song at first impression it gets boring very fast, whereas the pieces I have to take a deeper dive into in order to fully understand them, I still love ten years later. Just asking myself, if smell and music could somehow connect 🤔 They both evoke emotions (for me at least). I wonder how it would be if you created a song to go along with each of your fragrances and then also put one of your photographs on the box or in a booklet. The more senses involved, the better! Ok, it’s getting late, I’m starting to fantasize... off to bed ☺️ have a great evening!
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
Nice idea! I've actually made perfumes to other peoples music before.. and I marry up images with the music while I do it. I'll have a song that fits the theme and mood, and the image that goes along with the idea... and I'll blend while I look back at the picture every so often, listening to the music.. Funny. Good night!

I must admit that Imaginary Authors and Zoologist are two 'niche' brands that leave me cold. I have the original Perfume Guide but never touch it now. It's dated horribly, and it omitted so many of the fragrances I used to wear that it wasn't of great interest. Also finding a fragrance was hit and miss; for example Black (Bulgari) appears way before the main Bulgari fragrances. Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique for women was under J, but no mention of Le Male. Looking under L, still nothing. I eventually found it under M! Seriously frustrating and making very little sense to me. With so many websites devoted to fragrance, is a book with the opinions of one person useful?

Neither... Roja Dove is not a perfumer???? That shocks me. Ive watched many of his videos..... Im sure he has stated he worked for years under the best perfumers in the world. He is one of 3 perfumers that are allowed to use some special (i think) jasmine found only in a part of France.. im blown away that he has a company make his frags. Surely he creates the recipe and then gives it to whoever the company is??? yes or no anyone??

When someone smells so many fragrances, I quite easily understand the harshness in his/hers reviews. The olfaction function is based on addiction and the more you sniff dense, complex fragrances containing real raw ingredients, the less your nose/brain accepts the easier scents. Physically, your nose/brain adapts and you cannot stand anymore the simpler formulae. The problem with this book is that Luca Turin judges the perfumes from the perspective of a mundane human being and not that of a professional involved in the perfumery world. Yet people buy its book based on its fame as a biophysicist. That is why I am never going to purchase its book as I find it pointless. I would have expected more in depth reviews, which I see is not the case. To me, the "Scent and Chemistry" Facebook page is so much more useful. The scents are reviewed at the molecular level. Ok, they are almost all positive, but at least I learn something from them.
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
I agree, he misses the opportunity to give across more of his specialised knowledge, but instead reduces it to a single line with no useful information for the reason as to why he doesn't like it..It's humorous, but there's no broader context. They sometimes knock "cheap" materials and synthetics, and in other reviews give positive reviews.. like in the case of the 5 Star Le Mat...It uses a clear note of synthetic Cashmeran, and to me smells like artificial Rose Givco, a rose replacer by Guivadan. Yet that gets a 5 star, and others get knocked for being cheap on the formula cost, and using fake florals..

What I most liked about the 2008 book they put together is that they gave 5 stars to some very cheap perfumes that I wouldn’t think about at all had I not read the reviews . He gave Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely a great review which I would never had tried had it not been for his raving about it. And it is nice. The MFK reviews...I agree with him. I won a generous sample of Le Mat from Mrcologne76 on IG. It’s weird, by quite beautiful. I guess it’s the nutmeg, but it has a dry quality which is unusual for a rose. I hate to sound like a know it all...but my nose knows what I love and it's a thousands times better at recognizing a quality fragrance (one that I love) and, more importantly, how to influence my hand to reach for my wallet. It's like most medical doctors, I suppose...top surgeons are invaluable should I break an arm or need stitches, but they are absolutely worthless--or worse--at helping patients achieve and maintain health since they are trained to treat symptoms and are mandated to drink Big Pharma kook-aid in order to practice medicine in the West. That's why American's are getting fatter, sicker and are staring to die sooner - and the UK ain't far behind. Yep, everyone has an opinion...I'll take it with a grain of salt and do my own research. Ouch. Just like you said Peter - imagine if you were the perfumer... hearing that your perfume may come off as a pool of stale urine water fermenting behind an old radiator where a vagrant had died...years ago. Ouch. Oh well. At least the metaphors are entertaining! PS - we identified the vagrant as my old highschool gym teacher.

I can't agree much with Luca Turin's opinions on several perfumes. He's gone a bit ruthless lately. I wonder if he does so for shock value? Perfumes reviewed by Ali G? I mean c'mon he called Rania J's Ambre Loup a 2 star Smoky Clove. Eck Mr. Turin get yer nose checked mate!
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
I wasn't a huge fan of Rania J in general either, it's all just personal taste, just makes more sense to give reasons why you don't like something, rather than just killing it in a few words without context for why
@jingabobo6 жыл бұрын
FragranceView yeah that's what I would have expected- some explanation. His burns are getting ridiculously ott & personal. Sometimes it felt like I was reading lines from Rupaul's Drag race reading challenge!

This book of reviews lends itself to a lot of personal bias and prejudices as to what he likes. You could ask ten people and get ten diferring opinions on a fragrances. That is obviously why there is a plethora of fragrances out there. Something for everyone.

I do agree with him with his Tauer, Kurkdjian or Roja Dove reviews (5 stars for Tauer LDDM & ACDD, 1 star for Oud satin Mood and the horrible Amyris, and so on...). But these are just reviews : 5 stars for the Alaia first perfume is stupid for me, and 1 star for most of the Mona di Orio masterpieces (Nuit Noire, Amyitis, Carnation, ...) is more stupid than ever. He never understood the Mona di Orio perfumes! And "Jasmin Frangipane" from Lancôme doesn't deserve 5 stars too! Dominique Ropion has made much better perfumes (Carnal Flower or Superstitious for instance). What does he say about the Chanel Les Exclusifs EDP reformulations ? 31 Rue Cambon and Cuir de Russie EDT were 2 masterpieces, and now are just meh/OK in EDP versions, La Pausa is destroyed in EDP, and so on.

Not that anyone gives a poo, but I think ‘Roja’ is pronounced as ‘Roger’ (in the English pronunciation) because the guy’s name is Roger. Rhymes with ’todger’ also, which is British for ‘penis' 😁

No his brand his pronounced Roja - but his real name is Roger, he used ROJA because it sounds and looks posh. but I agree he is a dick

He's been a fragrance critic for many years, he's also got his own lab where he creates new fragrance molecules by using vibrational frequency to figure out how it's going to smell.. he copied coumarin, which was told to him couldn't be done.. by finding a molecule that vibrated to same frequency, and sure enough.. it ended up smelling like coumarin. He's got good knowledge, but ultimately it's still just an opinion on if something smells pleasant or not, the opinion is no more valid than the next guy.. Only you know's what you like, no one needs to tell you what to like

_I suppose the hardest part of composing something like this is staying awake_ XD . The Zoo . Carlos reviewed this in January . I book marked it , but never got any samples. Here's their link .Their from NY www.thezoo.nyc/ Le Mat got a 5 Star .Awesome. I got a split of it and a 7.5 .I didn't think you would care for this one Peter. Casmhere wood. So .anyways, it wears well on me . Lasts forever. Well, guess what just got cheaper, Halfati. Good. I want that one. Not for that price though . A couple of Sven's are good. Pink Patchouly and a white floral, but some of his others , not really . Kinda got mad at a reviewer , for this reviewer loved everything , specially her friends work . I put Oliver, Sven and Josh together. The make these abstract pieces. Nothing formed in concrete terms They kinda give me visuals where as others give me memories or something tangible . Memory of a girl suntanning and swimming in the lake , then she quick showers on the beach. No shampoo, just a fresh water rinse. The smell of her hair and skin after. Tangible , Creed's VIW or a nice beachy vibe one without going complete coco butter I like violet and iris too . Brezza di Mare by i profumi de firenze has that soft supple skin. Some of theirs can go way to vanilla or way to patchouli , but then some can be well balanced. I like Bon Parfemers 001 . Nice jasmine/floral/ neroli. It lasts too. Whoops last track again. I have all these samples out everywhere. Roja can be a little to much in one way, then another. I like , at least for right now, more balanced perfumes . I do own a few of the 7.5's of Roja. They used to send me free ones . That's all gone now though. I was at an Italian Fest tonight. Lot's of perfumes smells everywhere. Someone had the dry down of the Bright Neroli on heavy . Folks, just say no. i'll stop now Peter. Thanks buddy. Always fun.

I wore Le Mat yesterday, it only lasted about 6 hours on my skin though... I might review it. Need to wear it a few times... I've got a sample of Pink Patchouli, it's not for me, I didn't like anything of Sven's that I have...
@JohmathanBSwift6 жыл бұрын
6 hours with Le Mat. Mmmm. I have 2 . A 15 ml decant from 2014 and a new 7.5 ml early 2018 . I think I have a few samples of it too. I'll have to compare them . I'll have to sample Lancome's Jasmine Marzipan . I got swept up in the whole Oud Bouquet from Lancome thing . They must have changed the bottles again , and pushed up the price too. I do enjoy Satin Mood from MFK . I still have a 15 ml decant of Aqua Celestia . I think I wore it twice. I have a 15 ml of Pour le Sour Cologne too . I like Satin Mood much better than these . Ohhh, got MFK's Oud and The Globe Trotter . Yup, didn't like alot of Sven's either.Just not for me. Thanks for the reply Peter.

Some critics, pundits and reviewers wear the contrarian hat and utilize harsh and rude commentaries to get attention and boost the sales of their books.

I can see that sure

The author of the book seems to have a special hatred for Roja Dove. I don’t know why he targets them and he gives all of Rojas two star. Lol. I bet you can’t get those type of perfumes in a French flea market but if he can, good for him. I do think Rojas perfumes are over priced but that’s his market. He wants to sell his only to a special few.
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
I think it's because Roja copies a lot from Guerlain and other ideas, that combined with pretending to be a perfumer when he's not.. combine with over charging... I understand why people wouldn't like the man. Though it's not an accurate reflection of the quality of the scents, though plenty are not my taste.. not all of them are "bad" just over priced
@PerfumeGuru6 жыл бұрын
What was he doing in Guerlain for 20 years is more important than Turin's book ;-0. Don't you think buddy ?
@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
If anyone from Guerlain ever vouched for him actually being there studying as a perfumer, it would certainly be interesting. From what I've heard from perfumers talking to me it seems to be just a complete fairy tale woven story. I spoke to a sales assistant once in Selfridges here in the UK, who used to work with Roger a long time ago before he had his brand, and she told me he used to be a normal sales person on the shop floor.. who knows what to believe really. Only Roger really knows..
@harikrishnankannan87116 жыл бұрын
FragranceView he sure is a great sales person. But most of his scents are complex in nature. It’s not easy to come up with these concoctions if you don’t have any knowledge of how to make a perfume. I do agree that his pricing is astronomically high. All these things you are hearing might be born out of jealousy as well. Roja also says he studied oud in Middle East. Where did he study ? Under whose tutelage ? Nobody knows and nobody can prove. FYI - I am not a fan of all his scents but some of them are just outstanding. Never been to a French flea market so what do I know ? Lol.
@harikrishnankannan87116 жыл бұрын
FragranceView there are many a Roja Fanboys around and they hype him a lot more than he does himself. Lol. Sometimes I feel really angry when these fan boys praise a very normal scent of his sky high as if it is something out of this world. For example , his scent LONDON is a Labdanum bomb and nothing else. But his fanboys praise this scent as if it’s magical blah blah blah. That’s hype. Also his Parfum de la Nuit 3 is watery rose and Labdanum but these fan boys praise it as if it’s warm cozy etc. it barely stays on your skin and is a total disappointment. He charges 1500 dollars for that perfume. That’s daylight robbery and all these fools fall for it. But there are perfumes like musk Aoud which I would say is a masterpiece. It’s complex and rich. Not sure of the price tag but I like it. It must be routine for Luca. Lol.

@FragranceView6 жыл бұрын
He had an argument with me after watching my original video on Phuong Dang... sent me rude comments which he deleted.. then told me he thinks people who critique synthetics are stupid. Then made a dig that he's smelled all of Matriarch, doesn't own a single bottle.. but owns multiple from Phuong Dang.... basically knocking my taste, because I said Phuong Dang were shit... strange man. He then wrote things like ' LOL ' to me in block capitals, he's like a giant man size child.
@harikrishnankannan87116 жыл бұрын
FragranceView to be honest , I don’t follow Sebastian and have never watched any of his videos except for the Phuong dang one. There are only three videos available on phuong dang - yours, redolessence and his. I am sure that he is marketing phuong dang along with redolessence. I am 100 percent sure on this. That’s why he is taking it personal. Again, with Redolessence , how can a married guy who is a teacher by profession get the money to buy so many costly perfumes unless he is marketing some or most of them. They both think so highly of Bertrand Duchaufour. In their eyes, he could do no wrong. Lol. Maybe there is a total bias there. The only people I follow are you and Nikhil. I used to follow Jeremy but he is more of a marketing guy than anything else. The minute I learnt that, I unsubscribed from his channel. I don’t need to watch a guy who promotes himself more than the perfumes.
