It's interesting how context changes your perception of an episode, I grew up with an abusive father and always found "Fear Her" to be one of the scariest and most effective episodes. I was about the same age as Chloe when it aired and I'll never forget the scene where the drawing of her dad tries the escape the cupboard. Watching it back now probably won't have the same effect, but at the time it echoed every one of my worst nightmares - the effect was mainly due to how realistic it seemed (especially compared to the majority of DW villains).
@KaladinVegapunk3 жыл бұрын
wow, yeah i guess its all about context for sure. i mean thats universally rated the worst episode of the entire new who for the last 15 years haha, id rather watch capaldis terrible tree episode..or even black spot hahaha. its SO bad. the one everyone skips on a rewatch. i just watched it two days ago on my current rewatch since i always skip it, and oh MAN its bad. i mean her acting is atrocious, its clearly a low budget episode, and the squiggly line drawings are awful. tennant does what he can, but hes still phoning it in. i was in high school when these aired and even then this was the first of new who i cringed at haha even love and monsters has a few redeeming aspects, but fear her is just all around crap i mean the dad barely factors into it, its mentioned like twice

It's difficult to express how much this show meant to me between the ages of 8-12 years old - I was basically completely and utterly devoted to it and every episode was just brilliant and flawless, even if some have come to be viewed less favourably with hindsight. And in that time period, Tennant just happened to be in the role. And call me sentimental, but I feel so privileged to have been at an age (not too young, but not too old) where I could experience his era first hand and experience actual, genuine excitement throughout. Once Steven Moffat took over, I lost a little of that love, bit by bit, despite continuing to watch and enjoy the show. And the sheer, enduring intensity of my nostalgia for Ten's era makes him unsurpassable in the top spot, despite having had phenomenal performances from the likes of Peter Capaldi since. It's hard to say whether I had come to the show later down the line, would he have still been one of my favourites, but he just possesses many of the qualities I admire in the character and he played the part wonderfully.

Yeah, 10 year old nightowl lost interest after Series 6. I didn't hate the show (10 year olds aren't like that), I just stopped asking when it was on. I went back a few years ago, and 12 quickly became my favourite. As an adult, I love all these stories. But it can't be understated that Steven lost a devoted member of Doctor Who's core demographic. Many members, I imagine. Not because I couldn't get over Tennant, just because I was bored. Big failing on Steven's part. God help 10 year olds these days.
@SamyulDavis4 жыл бұрын
It wasnt just the age! 7B was exactly when I started tuning out. It was only briefly, but S6 was the first revival series to not be immediately rewarding and I despised the smarmy Clara/11 combo and their tepid stories. It was only a short window of course, as Night/Day/Time are my favourite things ever and then came my favourite series yet.

@@SamyulDavis - Christ, I hate Series 7. But, strangely enough, I'm still not angry. Steven had so much to do, bless him, it's a wonder anything was made at all. I remember Russell talking about the pressure of "wasting taxpayers' money", nearly having a meltdown in The Writer's Tale. But Steven had the 50th *plus* Matt's last-minute regeneration story. I imagine a lot of his plans for the Silence were thrown to the air. Then there's Sherlock! I'd have a breakdown, so I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky the worst we got was a whimsical, feisty Jenna and a twee, round-glasses-wearing Matt. Series 12 is the first series of Doctor Who I've actually been angry about. There's no excuse. It's not as though Chris's vision has gone astray like Series 7, because there is no vision. It's not as though he's being overly ambitious like Series 6, because there is no ambition. There's just betec Russell. Well, you've heard my rant on the desecration of Series 3. I just want to see Chris Chibnall's Doctor Who. Maybe then I can at least respect him. I only say I love Steven's work because I know you're a big fan, but it's more mixed than that. I just don't criticise the man as much because at least I know he worked bloody hard. I'd like to say the same for Chris.

@@tayojones9460 Journey's End problems. Rose having no purpose and just being back for fan service which completely ruined the impact of Doomsday. Also the fake out regeneration which breaks the whole concept because now the Doctor can just cut his hand off at the start of each regeneration to stop himself changing. The Doctor being merciful to the point of stupidity. Jack has a plan to blow up the crucible and the Doctor is upset by it. He then scolds his other self for attempting to destroy the Daleks when there is a literal count down to the end of the universe. Then Donna is able to take control of the entire Dalek race and stop the reality bomb all from some insignificant control panel that the Daleks thought they should put in the same room as the Doctor for some reason. People do realize that this control panel is in the vault right. Its the equivalent of putting a nuclear weapon in a prison. These controls also conveniently have the power to wipe out the entire Dalek race. In other words the Daleks are fucking idiots and this was the episode that ruined them. The Doctor then after doing nothing all episode long has the balls to scold his other self for destroying the Daleks, you know the guys who were literally a second away from wiping out all reality. He then decides to leave Rose back in her parallel world for no reason at all, there is no reason that Rose and the Metacrisis Doctor couldn't have stayed behind in their own universe. The only thing that was done well in this episode is Donna's exit and the Doctor heading off alone.

I definitely agree with stolen earth as it has one of my favourite moments in Doctor Who. The moment when Mr Smith plays the message from the Daleks at the beginning of the episode and the look on Elizabeth Sladen's face that shows that she has already given up and that shows knows she cant win. That for the first time she isn't even going to try as she knows they have already lost.

That entire segment is just played so well. You can hear how grave Mr Smith sounds in 'they have a message for the human race,' and then Sarah Jane replied with a brittle quality to put it through and then bitterly sobbing and hugging Luke to her, it sells the threat so beautifully.

I think Fear her would have been better if Chloe Webber had been a teenager. I could picture the lass that played Effy in skins doing a good job.

0:33 Oi! Colin’s quite nice without the stache! I mean, have you seen Six? He’s definitely on the pretty side!

I absolutely love last of the timelords, everything you said you didn't like about it were things I loved about it, even the deus ex machina. The only bit I don't like is the idea that cpt jack is the face of boe.
@maxpayneful43284 жыл бұрын
The fact jack is the face of boe is actually kind of interesting but each to their own I guess
@greghawkins594 жыл бұрын
@@maxpayneful4328 interesting? Nah it's not interesting at all, only thing it explains is how the face of boe knew to tell the doctor he wasn't alone. Just the idea that Jack somehow becomes a giant head lined with ovaries makes zero sense to me and is just rediculous.
@maxpayneful43284 жыл бұрын
@@greghawkins59 Mate you're saying that what happens to him....is ridiculous 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ it's doctor who for Christ's sake!!! How are you expecting it to make sense the whole show is a massive paradox
@greghawkins594 жыл бұрын
@@maxpayneful4328 there's such a thing as suspension of disbelief; being able to ignore the fact none of what happens is actually possible, so long as it makes sense within the story. The problem with the jack/boe stuff is that breaks my suspension of disbelief, it's too stupid of an idea for me to go along with. I can see no possible explanation that will satisfy me in that storyline.

Waters of Mars always seemed like it was Kilgrave rather than The Doctor. Tennant plays villains much better than he plays heroes, so i love seeing him become more villainous in that episode.

I absolutely love the stolen earth but I can never watch it because when I get to journeys end, Donna getting her memory wiped completely destroys me

With the tenth doctor I feel like I like the character Tennant is portraying, but just don't feel like he's the doctor to me. He feels more like a dashing, flirtatious rogue rather than an eccentric, wise old space grandpa.
@ftumschk4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Luckily, David Tennant is such a superb actor that he's always worth watching.

I would like that even if they are making big changes they also make justifications for this changes, like explaining why the doctor chooses to portray certain personalities traits, like. Why after spending 7 regenerations without having a romantic relationship with anyone, why suddenly at his 8th incarnation he decides to have one? (I know that is because regenerations are arbitrary, but being romantic is something you choose) i like to know what make the doctor to make that change, and the same for his different regenerations

*Pulls up fire-shields* I don't mind Fear Her and Midnight is my favourite episode. I disagree with the list tenfold, but I see where you are coming from and you do make some good points for Fear Her that I never thought about before. Buut Uptopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords is one of my favourite multi-parters in the whole of New Who. But yes we never speak of Love and Monsters. Just,, let it burn..
