Good, varied list of books. I'll add a few to my TBR! I think you should keep the book cover shown as you talk about the book and discuss tangents related. You faded the cover so fast and talk a bit that I forgot what book you were talking about. Just a thought.

My favorite romance this year was The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. I really liked what you said about being a rep for romance here on KZbin. I try to be that but am still a bit ashamed and only bring up one or two in my wrap up instead of all of them, especially the ones not published by major publishing houses. In 2019 I'll try to do better and you're an inspiration for that.

I totally understand-- there's so much BS around how romance readers are perceived. You should only share what you feel comfortable with. But in any case, I wish you a great 2019 of romance reading!!

Don’t know why this popped up now, 10 months later, but I’m glad it did! Several books went on my TBR list, yay! More importantly, though, as an aspiring romance writer I am fascinated by your ideas about the role romance can play in a reader’s life. I tend to picture a romance reader as someone who LOVES romance and stays in the genre... but that’s not me, and it’s obviously not you. I also feel like a corollary to your point at the end, that romance can show people experiencing really hard things working and achieving a happy ending, is that it makes ME willing to look at subject matter that I might not otherwise dive into. Something that feels hard to CONSUME, but that expands my horizons, is easier to take a leap to if I have that guaranteed HEA. Now I’m back to the drawing board on why I’m writing-in a good way 😉 Thanks!!

I wish you could leave a clip of the cover art of the book on screen longer. I love the cover art, I like to think about a review while looking at the cover to see how well it matches the cover

I loved this video, my TBR list is getting longer and longer :) My top romance read this year was The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. I also enjoyed the Royally series from Emma Chase, especially the second book.

I am 72 years old and there an idea that older people does not read. I having reading from 7 years old. First daily tales Mickey Donald Duck you name them magazines as Superman etc. Then harlequin and historical books and then historical romance and do not looks back or religious book the Bible. I will hear about your opinion of historical romance and romance paranormal.

I dabble in romance every once in a while but in all honesty I have a hard time fully immersing myself in the genre especially New Adult because of all the either blatant misogyny or the misogynistic undertones. I also have a problem with all the rehashed tropes (like the sexual assault backstory) and the almost always virginal heroine. My favorite romance novel is Unteachable by Leah Raeder, one of the few romance novels I actually liked the writing and for contemporary romance, I really like Julie James. They're not problematic and just really fun!

Yeah, I feel like New Adult in particular is having a hard time diversifying out of the misogynistic tropes, which is weird, considering it's a pretty new subgenre and the older subgenres seem to be much further ahead in having a lot more woman & sex positive attitudes. Julie James is one of my favs!

For historical romance check out Victoria Henley. She has historical romances of many different periods. I love her.

What the heck is Ian doing here,in a Romance Novel comments section? Well,I have to admit that (during a book haul last summer) in an attempt to purchase a broad selection,I bought a JoJo Moyes 'omnibus' collection. A Novel;a novella;and a bunch of short stories - all under the one cover. The novel (Paris for One) was reasonably charming and pleasantly developed,even though it contained no surprises. I read somewhere that it's currently in production for a movie release. The novella was my favourite - a story of two women a century apart,linked by a painting in the Musee D'orsay. The short stories were acceptable;but Moyes is a character writer,rather than a plotter. I'd give the omnibus edition a comfortable 3.5

Yes! As someone with a PhD in history who reads Romance I am always hitting my head against a wall when discussions of historical accuracy come up. There have always been brown and Black people in Europe. Very successful brown and black people. Also, not everyone was a sexist racist asshole...

YESSSSSS! Yes ma'am. Exactly -- I get so annoyed by the readership that goes on and on about incorrect foods or flowers or whatever being mentioned, but when you point out that there were only like 8 dukes in Regency, it's all, "well, you have to suspend your disbelief." Girl. Your belief suspension has a very specific pattern... and none of it points towards broadening who is visible in our understanding of the historical past.
