I’m so thankful for the booktube and beauty you tubers that don’t shy away from keep recommending the same thing repeatedly. It shows that it really is liked! When something is mentioned once, I might put it on a list, but then forget about it. But when it’s brought up a few times, it’s like Yes! I *really* do like this.

I definitely think that hate to love and enemies to lovers are different tropes. One of them as you said is basically dislike to love whereas the other is when they genuinely want to destroy each other.
@spiceshewrites3 жыл бұрын
I really like your tier breakdown! I agree in contemporary it's easier to do antipathy to love; true hate is not believable or redeemable.

I love haters to friends to lovers plots. Which is why I have enjoyed Mariana Zapata's books. I loved Kulti because I really related so much to the main character, and that never happens (Not in that way at least). I think it was the way she was with her family, and that she was a sport person and there were just so many ways she reminded me of myself.

I love your breakdown on this and hadn't really considered the subcategories before, but I totally see it now that you've said it. I've read the most in the first two categories, but am interested in the third. Definitely saving this video so I can come back and add anything I've missed to my TBR list!

Love Burn For Me. Hidden Legacy is so good. Suzanne Wright's Here Be Sexist Vampires is a good one for the hate to love trope. Ruby Dixon has a few in her barbarian series that is this trope as does S. E. Smith. She writes a lot of SciFi romance like Dixon does, but hers are shape shifting dragons instead of blue horned aliens.

I'm such a sucker for hate to love. Have you tried the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning? That's pretty hate to love and, ironically, readers seem to either hate or love it, but I found it incredibly addicting.

I love this trope, but I’ve never analyzed the specifics of what I like about it. I guess that as long as the “hate” is believable to overcome, and our characters have that angsty chemistry, I’m in. I just uploaded a video of every book by Mariana Zapata, and Kulti is definitely one of my favorites 😍

I've been kinda interested in trying out some sports romance - I'll definitely check out Mariana Zapata. I didn't know about Night's Darkest Embrace! I've liked Jeaniene Frost's books, so I'll have to look into that for sure. I'm so bummed that I didn't love Serpent & Dove (I thought it was just fine). I actually haven't tried the Immortals After Dark series, but that seems like something I'd like. But yeah, totally agree that actual hate to love is a much harder sell and that I also prefer these variants.

The IAD series is a lot of fun-- if you liked Jeaniene Frost, I think it's worth giving a try (I'd say start with A Hunger Like No Other, not the prequel novella)

I'm a fan of this trope and its variations. I'm sure I've read many versions of it and you've mentioned a number of them. Some additional ones I read recently and liked very much are 1) Teach Me by Olivia Wilde, which starts as a work place relationship. In this instance, no one out-and-out hates anyone but it involves two teachers, one who was recently hired to takeover some of the classes another teaches, without her knowing it was coming, and she stoically and professionally welcomes him even though she can't help but resent what happened to her and he can't get close to her because of it. 2) The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand. This is such a special little book. It's set in Paris and although it's a contemporary and set in the real world, there are elements of magic and fantasy to it that give it a fairy tale flavor. Anyway, the heroine and her aunts own a hot chocolate and sweets shop called La Maison des Sorcieres. As the story opens, a famous pastry chef opens his own shop right down the street from the heroine's threatening their business. She immediately sees him as a rival and dislikes him instantly, while the hero -- while recognizing her as a competitor -- is intrigued by her. 3) The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker. This story involves a young woman from Toronto who is compelled to visit her estranged father in Alaska, who she hasn't seen for most of her life, when she finds out he has an illness that may threaten his life. Upon arriving in Alaska, she is met by an employee of her father's who is a bush pilot and sees the daughter in a bad light because she's been out of his employer/friend's life and is suspicious of her intentions and, ultimately, vice versa. For Maura/Moira (sorry, don't know how you spell it) -- I know you lost your dad and this story might be difficult for you because of that. However, I think it's really good.

A version of the - she hates him, he likes her - that I recently read and enjoyed was The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig. A ridiculous historical adventure romance. Silly, stupid fun that makes no sense whatsoever but was perfect after a couple of very mediocre books to lift my mood, again.
