I used to be a big Blizzard fan as a kid, World of Warcraft holds so much nostalgia for me. I've stopped playing games as I need to focus on my career but I still like to go back and revisit games. I'm worried that paying for wow is going to force me to play the game more than I should so I think private servers might be best for me. I just want to roam around and do some quests. Are these servers easy to setup and launch?

I'd just go with WoW-Mania if you want a server to just play once in a while and kill some stuff/quest. It is a WOTLK server but has Worgen and Goblins that are playable and you get free 10-slot bags so you don't have to worry about space so much in the beginning. It's not the most populated server by any means but it's scripted well, has a relaxed atmosphere, and I personally enjoy the lack of constant chat like on Turtle. Turtle's chat almost drove me insane with all the weird stuff being discussed like "femboy here 1 gold to suck your character off or 2 to use my hole", political posts, sexual posts, neckbeard stuff, etc. I ended up having to turn it off before uninstalling it lol. Warmane isn't too bad though but the mods are a bit unhinged for sure. Netherwing is pretty good too and populated if you care about that, also very well scripted like Mania, Mistblade is great too if you are up for a Mists of Pandaria server and is solid across the board. I just suggest avoiding Turtle, despite it's very high population the community is very bad and the moderators either do nothing or they step overboard depending on which one is on at the time.

@hiadeikum3043 Thank you very much for the info! So far, I've made two characters on 2 warmane realms, classic and wotlk. The xp boosts I find pretty helpful as there's less grinding. But yeah I've been wanting to try a goblin lately as I never had when I was younger. Do you know if the WoW-Mania server being in Wotlk affects any of the goblin experience? Like missing on some goblin lore or something?

@@KINGBublepop I don't think that it'd mess up the goblin lore but the goblin/worgen experience on Mania is a bit barebones. Turtle-WoW has an actual fully fleshed-out goblin starting area though with custom quests and areas. Still, I'd suggest avoiding or turning off the chat on that server if you join it though and just play it by yourself or with people you know. There are a lot of greifer's and trolls on the server but it has some of the best custom content for sure. Mania has goblins but you just start out in the orc/troll area and despite NPC's acknowledging you as a goblin but the best part are their racials on Mania. Goblins get rocket jump which is basically a get out of jail free card that allows you to jump terrain or on top of unreachable areas when in trouble or just for fun and is probably the best racial on that server due to those reasons. Their other racial on there is "summon hobgoblin" which is useable every 30 minutes and allows you to summon a merchant that buys and sells items to you anywhere inn the world so it's BiS for when you just want to grind and don't feel like heading all the way back to town. For those reasons I feel like Goblins are very well done in Mania from a gameplay aspect but Turtle Wow does the best job bar-none when it comes to their lore but the racials are nowhere near as powerful on there by any means. So I'd say if you want the lore Turtle is the place to go for a fresh goblin experience but Mania does a lot better in regards to fleshing them out gameplay-wise so neither server is truly the best in regards to them as a race so I'd suggest trying both and doing some quests on Turtle in their starter zone and playing one on Mania to try out their amazing racial abilities as well. Another thing is that Turtle is the best for grouping and pvp but Mania has a lot more quality of life features but a lower population by FAR. This means that questing will be easier on Mania due to less competition over spawns but it can feel like a ghost town (I don't personally mind that but many do) compared to Turtle. I'd say Warmane is a good combination of both though with it's medium population and some QoL features. Really though, I've played over half a dozen private servers ranging from vanilla to Mists of Pandaria and none of them truly felt perfect, some offered more in some ways but lacked in others but the three servers I mentioned are probably my favorites in no particular order. Netherwing is another great server but is The Burning Crusade and doesn't have goblins as playable characters, it's a medium sized server like Warmane and is scripted very well. Also, one other thing to mention. Turtle WoW does have some technical issues compared to most servers (at least for me) as there is some input lag I've not experienced on the other servers I mentioned. This could be to it's very high population, iffy scripting, or server lag but it made the server unplayable to me. For instance, I played a Dwarf hunter and when I shot a mob I'd hear the gunshot but then the screen would "freeze" for 3-4 seconds and then the enemy would be hitting my character in the face once things got back to normal, this didn't happen every fight but a good third of the time. It got to the point that I just couldn't enjoy myself and I was ranking last on the damage meters (besides the healer) every dungeon I ran and pvp was literally impossible to play as I'd just get killed as I couldn't move my character after initiating combat or attempting to kite a player/mob. You may have better luck than me on Turtle though, I just can't personally recommend it but it does seem to have most of what you are looking for in a private server. Just don't go in expecting goblins to compete with orcs, trolls, gnomes, night elves, or humans on it though as their racials are a mixed bag on there. On Mania goblins are overpowered though in many ways so that may be a negative as well. But yeah, population-wise Turtle is definitely at the top of the food chain but also the most toxic and hard to complete quests on despite having the best quests overall. Mania is the opposite in every way, and Warmane is a good balance of both so I suggest trying Turtle and Mania and just uninstalling the two out of the three you don't like since you already have Warmane installed. That's my suggestion for you anyways, been on private servers for many years and yeah... none are perfect by any means but everyone has different likes and dislikes and anyone should be able to find one that suits them for the most part. After all, there is no reason to invest time and effort past level 30 if you aren't enjoying yourself and everyone has their own definition of enjoyment, some like to group up, some prefer pvp, others just like to quest and explore, some enjoy well scripted gameplay that is fluid, others may prefer larger populations or lower ones, etc. Anyways, enjoy your time checking out private servers, it took me quite a few "experiments" testing each one before I found the one that suits my tastes. Most of all just have fun though, it's just a game and a good way to de-stress from life and just get away from it all for a couple hours now and then when you feel the itch for a 20 year-old game you just can't seem to stop playing regardless of sinking 100's of hours in it lol!

I am a fan of Chromiecraft myself. I find them to be friendly and more helpful than other servers, and isn't pay to play like other servers. Also, you're quoting population stats, but its pretty common knowledge that these companies report fake numbers to make themselves look good. Expect any real number to be at least half of what they're reporting, maybe even less.

If you still wanna play WotLK, then either Warmane (with long history)or Whitemane (which will be coming out in few weeks fresh), but there’s so many options of different expansions, customs servers etc you could try different versions of the game and see what you like best

I just tried few servers like Ascension, warmane, because I wanted to familiarize with Wow before buying it, but sadly the experience wasn't that great, steady ping of 150 and to me thats a lot of input lag.

I'm currently playing on Whitemane in order to refresh my Cataclysm knowledge and get ready for Cataclysm Classic on retail, I assume you will also be playing that when it launches. I don't think Whitemane should launch a WoTLK realm simply because the competition i.e Warmane is far too great

Warmane is the most popular one. 12k players on every day. Keep it mind it's p2w, but no one is forcing you to pay. You can play like you always do. And last thing, if you come from Classic, every single addon on you use is incompatible with Warmane.

Icecrown server is pay to win. Lordaeron server on the other hand isnt. The only exception to that is you can buy/sell characters on lordaeron aswel, but not all items you want like in icecrow.

me and some frends started playing on wowturtle private.. we are all seasoned wow players so we rolled hc. we all died to disconect.... GM's didnt eve give a fuck. then we learned the server is very unstable and people dont even bother raiding due to the disconects and rollbacks. but never a rollback for hc players lol. gm's out of touch 100% a whole grp dies to DC in ZG they dont do shit but the spam local. just a horrble expirience :D hunter died questing in BB loged back to a deqath char. tank died in SM whit healer also loged back to an death char. we didnt even had fun it was just a drag not to die to a dc. so we are back on offical servers ,twow is a scam ,well hc option is anyway, they have a pvp server for nobodys while the people asking for a hc dedicated server. so it stops the DCs. create an acc rn go check.

Mistblade 2 is a waste of time, they should've made it a pvp realm with max level character creation with pvp gear ilvl 522 or at least increase all exp rates of leveling , professions, honor up to x3 to make it a fun to play

I found WoW to be soo bloated by its neglected legacy content because of its "Current expansion is the game" mentality, that I just cant get into the lore to actually care to do anything in the MMO. I mean having all Vanilla-TBC-WOTLK content scaled/gated without stupid powercreep IK or be IKed. No speedrunning BS.
