this song has been done to death! Leave it to Carol to do it her way.. she has always been the queen of mimicry.. and slowing it down you can hear all the words.. and yet she found new laughs spots in it.. genius..

to you're point, I've never heard it at the same tempo as the original featuring Beth Howland (although I'm sure it's been done). Still, it's not slow, and what a treat to have an extra nanosecond to absorb every word. Carol Burnett's performance is excellent and I'm glad it is preserved for the ages.

As Carol Buenet clearly states to the brides maide " Are You In There...." Only she could provide what I think is a clear added line to convey the notion of what happens on a wedding day. Is those lines in the original lyrics?

I keep seeing that people are saying that Carol's version is slower than the original. She's probably doing it slower so people can understand her, to put more comedy into it, and to do her own version of the song. I personally love the original and this one.

Lewis Keyes So are you claiming Carol Burnett knows better than Stephen Sondheim? Love Carol, but I think Sondheim knows his own work best. (Not saying she's not allowed to do her own spin- but having a preference for the speed of the original is a completely acceptable stance)

I love this version, because it's not really good as far as the singing of it goes, and I mean that as a compliment. Like I've heard it really well sung before, but Carol does a great job of a) conveying Amy's hysteria, and b) making it really funny, and I think that's more important

Carole totally rocks this. I hate it when it goes too fast and you can't hear the lyric. And am I hearing Ruthie Henshal singing the high part there? And being told to go home! Beautiful! I don't know how anyone does this song, honestly. I once heard a pro singer in a concert try this one and she totally lost it, poor woman, I felt so sorry for her, it was just a mess. Leave it to Carol to do the best version I know!

The most boring interpretations of any musical number or role are when an actor simply model themselves after the original, or the original concept. I am all about going by the book, but nothing refreshes things more by keeping some original aspects, but giving it a new spin to make the character unique to that actor. A good example is Gypsy. Not a fan of Patti, too much, but the 2008 revival gave a huge update to a lot of the character work and humor.

@fabulousminge - yes, it is John Barrowman in the chorus of this song. He appears in many more videos on this channel. You can also do a Google search for "theBestArts John Barrowman" to find a collection of many of his best performance videos. Unfortunately, the "Putting It Together" video is region 1 only, so doesn't play on standard DVD players in the UK. However, it should play on all PC DVD players worldwide.
