Hitler's "Desert Fox", Rommel pushed forward at El Alamein, but with the arrival of the maverick British General, Bernard Montgomery, to take charge of the Eighth Army in North Africa, the wind of change was about to blow. Meanwhile on the Russian Front Hitler's troops advanced their Stalingrad campaign, with the Führer boasting that this key city would soon be his.

Rommel is not overrated. He did well with what we had. Remember, Germany was faltering at this point. Majority of supplies were funnelled into Operation Barbarossa. Rommel lost the race to refit and resupply. And thus lost the battle. Given equal supplies on both sides, Rommel would have steamrolled Montgomery right out of Egypt. Rommel was pulled out of Egypt and assigned to defend the coast on D-day. Even then, many of his suggestions were overruled. Going back earlier, Rommel's troops were called the 'ghost division' at one point because he blitzed thru the low countries so fast, higher ups did not know where his division was. Some say he intentionally broke radio contact so he could have free reign over his corps.

My uncle was a Doctor and in the Medical Corps of the Allied forces, and was sent to Africa. India had agreed to support the war effort on condition that Britain would give India freedom after the War was over. One day back in India, my aunt received a telegram regarding my uncle saying, "Missing in action, presumed dead." Some months later, there was a knock on the door. My aunt opened it to see her husband standing there. At that instant her hair turned snow white!

My pops pop was a medic in the USA 508 PIR 82nd A/B Div. with capt.s rank , and carried a .30 cal. carbine ; optional . Due to grandpa's severe PSTD issues , he took years to explain his nasty experiences in WW2 Europe ( ETO ) ! He hesitantly talked about some of the bloodiest battles he was in ; from the country side of " Bocage " , or hedgerow vicious , grim fighting , and the bloody fighting @ Nimwjegan Holland , and the 101st A/B @ Einhoven , and the near calamitous events for the Brit paratroopers @ Arnhem Holland , Allied casualties were high on both Axis , and Allied .But , the Allies madeslight progress @ high casualties , and , later had to defend their meager gains at Evan higher casualties almost to the end of WW2 in Europe . Grandpa was wounded in the Ardennes , when the jeep he was traveling in hit a landmine kia driver , soldier behind driver , and wounding soldier behind grandpa , and wounding grandpa too. Grandpa , and colleague were picked up by an American patrol , and luckily , for 1st Waffen SS Colonel Joachim Pieper of the " Liebstandarte " Panzer Grenadier SS Div . Was lurking around the area , after Piepers murdering of nearly 80 to maybe 150 unarmed American troops @ Malmady , Belgium . Grandpa 's wounded leg was expediently fixed , and like other American medics was ordered to assist concentration camp victims ; seasoned medics , and he vomited the poignant stench of feces , urine , stench of starving emaciated victims , of death , and dying . He said , in a sort of a contorted look , it was hell ! His palpable PSTD issues was a result of the bad experience he had , esoecially being a medic , in the ETO in WW2 . Grandpa died of esophageal cancer nearly 28 years ago .

@@JohnEglick-oz6cd Bad experience. My grandfather, back in India, was a Doc and also a Captain in the Medical Corps of the British Army. But he was sent to Afghanistan. Did not see battle action. @@hazeldmello5800 Why was your grandpa sent to Afghanistan ? The only thing I can think of is that if the Germans got through @ Stalingrad they would eventually link up the Germanys' "Desert Fox "Field Marshall General Erwin Rommel around Iran . Then , would of pushed on to rlmeet up with the Imperialist / Fascist Japanese commiting from India , if the Japanese were victorious in Burma ( Myanmar ) . But , that would be a humongous feat to overcome being a real logistical nightmare , and draining the Axis troops fighting in European Theater of Operations (ETO) to PTO ( Pacific Theater of Operations ) . But , it had the potential of happening ; luckily not . The point is that your grandpa would of been employed against the Nazis , and Imperialistic /Fascist Japanese too . Italy would of helped too in securing flanks of Rommel's advance . Mussolini's troops would of covered the southern flanks area in Birth Africa . Come to think of it if the Axis would of linked up a WW2 would of reached in collosal proportions of horrific fighting ,with Nazi- Germany on one side , with Fascist Italy along with the Nazi- Germans , and the Imperialist / Fascist Japanese on the other coming from the East via Burma .

I'm half Maltese and English, currently living on this tiny rock. I can honestly say that the Maltese people are tough resilient people. In 1565, when the Ottoman Empire invaded Malta, known as the Great Siege of Malta, even the Maltese and the Knights of Malta managed to defeat a much superior power. And what is not well known is during the 1960's and 70's, Maltese Mafia went to London and took over the West End. In a nutshell, Malta might be a tiny island, but the People are tough, even my mother at 79, loves a good scrap 😅.

The documentary contains a historical inaccuracy. Greece has never been defeated by Italy. When Italy invaded Greece on October 28, 1940, the Hellenic Army defended itself effectively in the first few weeks and immediately, despite its small force, counterattacked and repulsed them victoriously. It pushed the Italians back into Albania, liberating the Northern Continent at the same time. The Italians, led by Mussolini himself, in March 1941 launched another fierce attack against the Hellenic Army, but the Italian Army suffered a second humiliating defeat in the epic battle of Hill 731. On April 6 1941, Greece received the German attack on the forts of the Metaxas Line on the Hellenic-Bulgarian border. There the Greeks fought with self-sacrifice that made even Hitler confess his admiration for the bravery of the Greek Soldier. The Germans were unable to take the forts and invaded from the Hellenic-Yugoslav border and Greece faced with a second superpower, was forced to sign a capitulation with Germany and Greece was under German occupation. Thus Greece was NEVER defeated by Italy.

IT's an interesting and patriotic point of view. Greece surrendered to German troops 20th April 41.. and to the ITALIANS on the 23rd.
@mikebull9785
@mikebull9785 Жыл бұрын
The issue is not the patriotic dimension of a victory. What matters is the historical truth about the events and the truth is that Greece surrendered to Germany. It is no coincidence that after the surrender the years that followed were called the German occupation. Greece signed a surrender to Germany and the German Army filled Greece with holocausts of the civilian population, but then had to face National resistance from the Greek revolutionaries. Italy suffered the most humiliating defeat at the hands of the Hellenic Army. The Italians in the German occupation were under the orders of the Germans.
@mikebull9785
@mikebull9785 Жыл бұрын
@@liamdaletvThe Nazi flag was raised on the Acropolis, not the Italian one. It's just that the narrator of the documentary for some reason doesn't want to discredit the Italians by covering up their defeat and says that the Italians won with the help of the Germans when in fact the Germans just won without nobody's help and of course Greece geographically fell completely at the end of May 1941 with the battle of Crete. I at least insist on the truth of the historical facts because wrong reporting of facts also creates wrong conclusions. The Italian Army was defeated in all the battles of this war by the Hellenic Army. They simply followed the Germans in their advance into the interior of Greece. The capitulation was made arbitrarily by General Tsolakoglou and then the Germans submitted to him harsher terms including the Italians. We cannot call this an Italian military victory, but a German victory with the Italians sharing in the spoils as the little brother.

Could you imagine the two of them hosting a Q & A in the 60s? Sadly we were deprived of that because war happens. We know what happens to Rommel but it is less clear what happened to Patton.

Rommel set up a special unit to monitor this colonels information. In these circumstances appearing brilliant is not so hard. When the British overran this unit and realised what was happening and his information source dried up Rommel was nothing special.

The conflict didn’t start with Germany invading Poland.., that all depends on where you live. In Africa the Italians had been fighting in Abesinia.., in China the Japanese had been engaged since the early 30’ etc. In fact the hole concept of a “Second World War” didn’t make it before the winter 1941/42 when Japan draw USA fully into the conflict. And only then did we think about “the Great War” as a First World War.

Your commentary on the Middle East,and the leadership of Auchinlek, is erroneous at best. It is true, that because Auckenlek's roots were in the Indian Army, and he was not familiar with the leadership of the British Army, he didn't have the necessary familiarity with the senior officers to make the best choices. After Ritchie's defeat, he took over the 8th Army, chose the site of El Alemain, where he couldn't be outflanked, and stopped Rommel's concerted attempts to break through to the Nile. ( It must also be remembered, that because of the disastrous security leak in Cairo, caused by the compromise of the American's secret code, Rommel had complete access to all of Auchinlek's plans throughout that disastrous period.) Auchinlek, was the general that started the preparations for Alem Halfa, knowing that it was Rommel's only option for an attempt to outflank the British. He had advised Churchill that his preparations to begin an offensive, would not be complete before September, and the fact that Churchill replaced him with Montgomery, further eroded that timetable into October. Montgomery was no genius, he was a setpiece watchmaker, who damn near failed. When he finally did succeed at Alemain, he was to much of a chicken heart to followup and finish Rommel off, even though he was fully aware that Rommel had virtually nothing left after the battle.,

Why have you never done a video on the differences between the Nazi paratrooper kit, and the much more controlled Allied 'chutes? The methods of control, or not, are very different in their use. I don't expect many of your viewers will ever have given this a single thought.

@@IMAGESOFWAR "SPULT". Sorry, I don't know that word! What language is that? And, I DELIBERATELY, asked the question because it was clearly a dubbed film, with an English voice-over, but the editor was just too English to bother to do the job correctly, typical of the average low tech training given in England.

@@LiamDale-FestivalFilms I agree, there always is. Mostly, those who make a mistake, and have too big an ego to admit it. Typical of self-obsessed individuals without a social life with real people. You just don't care. I care. My dad was in North Africa from July 1939, first in the Western Desert Force, then the Eight Army, before his 4th Armoured Division was pulled back to Britain for re-equipping for D-Day, Then fighting in France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. All you do is insult the memory of the troops who pulled off the second defeat that the Nazi army suffered in WW2. I understand why you don't care. There is, usually, one of two reasons. You, probably, qualify for both of them.
