I find it interesting that you paint Stanwyck as a b--tch for standing up for herself. I also don't understand why you talk as if it is odd for her to have gotten alimony. Women traditionally were paid alimony in those days, even to today, especially in a world where men are paid more than women, and actresses age out of the system earlier than their male counterparts. It makes total sense. The fact that Stanwyck persevered and managed to keep herself employed is a testament to her grit and talent, and could not in any way have been easily foreseen.

I had always heard Robert Taylor referred to as the man with the perfect profile. He and Tyrone Power were considered the two best looking leading men in Hollywood during their heyday. Although probably a bit too pretty for some who preferred more ruggedly handsome men like Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, or John Wayne. The pretty boy stage didn't last forever and by the 1950s they were starting to lose their looks and a new wave of young beautiful men like Tab Hunter and Paul Newman started to take their place.

Barbara was bisexual as was Robert, and both of them had affairs outside of the marriage. Saying that she was purported to be a lesbian but that there is no evidence of it is totally false. She is mentioned in dozens of memoirs as a lesbian. This was normal for Hollywood and I support the LGTBQ community. Just tell it like it is, though. Her preference was women but she did love Robert. When he fell hard for Lana Turner, and was prepared to end the marriage, Barbara threatened to kill herself. THAT is why he dropped Lana. She rejected her thoroughly neglected adopted son, even on her deathbed. What kind of mother does this?

We will never know exactly what life Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck had together. But there was one thing for sure, and that was Taylor learned a great deal about acting from Stanwyck; as did William Holden and Robert Wagner. She was not a mother figure to them, but it may be argued she wore the pants. She was the boss. Quite some woman on the screen and in real life. Like Bette Davis, she could act any man off the set. She was also a woman who was able to gain the respect of those she worked with. She was loved, as well as admired, by many a director. What an actress she was and what a legacy of work she has left behind for all to enjoy. She loved Taylor there is no doubt, but it was a love that could not keep them together. When there was a fire at Stanwyck's house in her later years, she was more concerned about saving the letters from Taylor than anything else. At his funeral she cried bitterly, and perhaps demonstated to all that the marriage to Taylor was no sham. Taylor was not to enjoy the plaudits of the critics as Stanwyck, but he could act as well as many leading men. Waterloo Bridge being one of his best performances. He was not just a pretty face, and he probably had Stanwyck to thank for the popularity that he enjoyed throughout his career. I believe Barbara Stanwyck must be given a lot of credit for the actor Robert Taylor was.

This kind of relationship happens with older men and younger or inexperienced women all the time. The documentary is more understanding to Taylor than to Stanwyck. Women often support and "raise" their husbands or partners, say, through school or developing their careers, then get dropped when the guy gets where he wants. It's not right to feel happy for Taylor getting to be confident and sowing his wild oats, as though it was an okay and expected rite of passage to dump his wife for gorgeous women. Or to demonize her for speaking up against his philandering, even if in public.

I loved 'Ball of Fire', 'Sorry, Wrong Number', 'Titanic', 'Walk On the Wild Side' and 'The Thorn Birds'. I also watched the Academy Awards on TV with Barbara and William Holden, then three years later, Stanwyck alone (after Holden's death) accepting her honorary Oscar (a travesty she'd never won for a single performance) and tearing up when dedicating it to her "golden boy".

It's amazing just how much the studios plucked the eyebrows of male actors, but the practise didn't cross over into the public at large until relatively recently.
