Louis XIV, was a king of France and Navarre, and known as "The Sun King". He was born September 5, 1638 at the Château Neuf of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died September 1, 1715 in Versailles. His reign extends from May 14, 1643 - under the regency of his mother Anne of Austria until September 7, 1651 - until her death in 1715. His reign, lasted 72 years, was one of the longest in the history of Europe and the longest in the history of France.

Louis XIV was my father's favourite French king. I remember being told as a young child that he was the "Sun King" and some of the first French I learned was "l'etat c'est moi" ("I am the State). Being something of a French royalty buff, I find him the most interesting of the last three French kings (Louis XVI wsn't a bad sort, but didn't seem to realize that the age of constitutional monarchs had arrived).

One of the things I liked was that while he had many mistresses, he did see to his wife's pleasure as well (Madame De Montespan actually had a couple of spats with Louis over that). It may have been somewhat perfunctory, but other kings have been known to completely neglect their wives--here's looking at you, Henry VIII. In a way, it's sad that he could not marry Marie Mancini, but such were the ways of royalty at the time and compared to say, the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, his marriage to Marie Therese was a rip-roaring success--fortunately most royals can now follow their hearts ( I do try to judge by the standards common amongst royalty at the time since to judge by modern standards is not fair, IMO).

No. Monarchy is poison. Under all monarchies, 97% of the people of France lived in extreme poverty, abuseand suffering. But since history books are mainly written by dictators, all you know is some fairytale of glory and greatness told by the corrupt bourgeoisie.

@@emmilypalmer9269 wlWell, actually no. I believe that it was 100% a real pregnancy. Perhaps Louis 13 wasn't the biological father though, in which case I'd say it would be Jules Mazarin. But I do believe the pregnancy was real. Anne of Austria was not well liked and I think had it been necessary to stage a pregnancy and bring in a changeling, then they'd have just done away with her somehow altogether. Also, the French Courtiers and Aristocracy, especially The Royal Family, kept very detailed & advanced records that we'd likely have some clues if there were any suspicions of a fake pregnancy. There are none. I have a Bachelor's in European History, with my thesis on The French Royal Family. So, I do have a little leverage here, but I cannot prove it, no. 🤫🤔🤨😒

@@CountessKitten When the remains of Louis XVII were found, there was a DNA expertise made with the remains of Henry IV. The match was perfect. If Louis XIV had not been Anne and Louis XIII's son, the match would have been impossible. Besides, the common rule was for the queen to give birth in public, so as to make sure there was no possible substitution of the baby. Moreover, take a close look at the portraits of Anne d'Autriche and Louis XIV : he looked like his mother. On the contrary, Louis XIV's brother looked like his father.

I have always heard the name "Richelieu" pronounced as "REESH-loo", but here it is pronounced as "Ree-shell-YOO"... I'm guessing that neither are correct, but I wonder; which one is closer?
@mathonamoore123
@mathonamoore123 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, both of those are incorrect too. Google - how to pronounce Richelieu. The main problem is with the 'lieu' part. It's not exactly LOO it is more like LEE UH, now say it faster as if, to join the LEE UH sounds. I can pronounce it, as I lived in Paris and speak French but you need to hear this one said. You can get away, with some written explanations of pronouncing words but the LIEU has a very unique sound, it is not LOO or YOO. You will understand me, when you Google it. Also, please listen to at least 2 pronunciations, as one I found is from a native French speaker (who often messes up actual Irish names, he butchers them lol I know them as I'm Irish! And he often makes mistakes pronouncing other languages too, I forget was it a Spanish or English place or person's name but he got it wrong. So it is advisable to check at least two pronunciations, to see how they differ or are the alike. Best of luck, from Ireland 🇮🇪💜💐 The 12th of May 2022.

Not really, that was a looong time coming and inevitable. When a tiny portion of a nation's population take the vast majority of their nation's wealth and cause endless suffering for the vast majority of the population, they are on a time limit. Same is happening now with billionaires. They will also face a global revolt eventually if they keep going on like this, it always happens throughout history and is always only a matter of time.
