I’m in Chile and went to Rapa Nui in October. Many things in this video and things you will read about Rapa Nui aren’t factual but science trying to construct meaning. The Rapa Nui people are really cool and spiritual and not listened to about their own history or by the Chilean government. There is stuff being discovered all the time, like the fresh water springs. If ecocide happened, it closely coincides with the timeline of the global cooling during the Middle Ages, which likely contributed to population decline globally. Also, they don’t know who toppled the Moai, but some think it was the Spanish. There are even theories that contact of the island was made not just by Polynesians but by people from the Americas. The archeological record is estimated to be about ten percent of what we know, so take that into account when you’re listening to academics explaining people and their history. I have to do a project for school and it’s frustrating because so many stupid theories have been debunked about the Rapa Nui over the years. Amazing place and not at all what I was expecting based on years of being misinformed about all the mysteries.

Yes, I 'm sure the history of the Rapa Nui is interesting, but just like the dynastic Egyptians and the Aztecs, they were inheritors of what was already there. My point is that the mainstream archaeologists always date these sites and attribute them to later peoples. They will not look at the glaringly obvious difference in building techniques.

Thank you for your comomentary. More and more is being discovered, and other theories are being debunked. It feels weird when you know something is absolutely different in a "documentary " Like you so wisely said, there are more facts to come, and they are conjectures, not necessarily fact like they seem.
@ercanak1Күн бұрын
The documentary was shot in 2001. Of course, some theories have been refuted in the 20 years since then.

These Rapa Nui are obviously primitives who were the latest occupiers of this Island. The megalithic artifacts are at least older than the YD cataclysm and are much more interesting, or at least, they should be.

worse yet, lazy americans never bother to translate other languages lol. why bother making subtitles if you are going to simply put "french being spoken" lol.
@davebenadum33046 күн бұрын
It is strange to be in two languages. Since it is narrated in English the French should be captioned in English. Then for French it should be re-narrated in French.
@edwardlulofs4448 күн бұрын
Math note: cyphers are readable with a key. Almost all, maybe all of human languages are codes. The writing in code means each symbol is like a word. One has to be told what they mean by a dictionary. Human language also has grammar. Again, this is unknowable without reference to a modern human language. Only a few languages have been decoded. If you have a Rosetta stone, the unknown language can be seen and, for wider communication at the time of writing, another language that is known. Then by comparing them the unknown language can sometimes be partially decoded.

this video was really well done, and I appreciate the effort you put into showcasing Easter Island's unique history! however, I can't help but wonder if the focus on the moai statues overshadows the rich culture and stories of the Rapa Nui people themselves. it feels like we might be missing out on a deeper understanding of their traditions. what do you all think?
@oo0Spyder0oo3 күн бұрын
The statues are the focus, just as Stonehenge is, if you watched it all you would understand that the statues’ history tells us about the people that the people no longer remember now.
