I miss this old thing. I was 6 years old when it was installed and my dad took me to the theater for the specific purpose of seeing it; it was such a big deal. I was completely terrified of it, and every time that my family would go to see a movie there, my sister and I would run away to hide in the washrooms whenever the dragon started. It certainly gave me quite a few chills! It really is a shame they're taking away so much of the mall's old decor. It definitely takes away a lot of the quirky vintage charm that made the mall so unique and memorable.

I've worked at this theatre since 2002, and I'm still there. It's been really interesting, seeing how things have changed over the years. I, for one, do not miss the dragon. It was just too loud! Just as a bit of clarification: the frequency of the show was never reduced to be every hour. It was a common assumption that it played hourly, but, in my time at the theatre, it was consistently every 20 minutes. That is, when it worked. As time went on, it had more and more downtime between repairs. So yeah, if you're ever at Scotiabank Theatre on a weekday afternoon, and you see Bob there (that's me), come say hi! Bonus Fun Fact: the dragon's name was Excalibur.

I can't imagine how annoying it would have been to be working while that thing was going on. Every fifteen minutes, you'd have to stop taking people's orders! I only had a pair of shifts there, so I miss the dragon, lol.

West Edmonton mall has really fallen, they've been focusing on "modernizing" the mall trying to fit in with every other mall out there, the thing is not following the foot steps of other malls is what made WEM Unique, I also hope that you make a video about the fountain that used to stand at Galaxyland which used to be near the airplanes/haunted house before it was ripped out and replaced with motor jump and the teacups ride, it is disappointing that features like these we're stripped. Especially in Galaxyland, they've taken safety to a whole new level and I personally believe that it has become over the top by adding seatbelts to rides that have secure overhead bars and raising he height limits on just about every ride.

I worked at the mall in 2010. Was super sad to see all the abandoned attractions that made the mall what it was. Being there in 2010 was nothing like it was in 1992 on a family vacation. I can only imagine now how much more depressing the malls become.

I loved the dragon so much. I actually believe it was meant to be a female. A mother dragon protecting her babies. When you go down the hallway to the left where all the other theatres are (not including 1 and 2) there's a smaller concession stand with 2 baby dragons on top. They're only shown from the neck up. Even though momma is gone the babies are still there.

I stumbled upon your channel and love your videos! My dad and I used to go to WEM when I was little all the time and the main attractions for me were the whale, dragon and the submarines! Now all of which are gone or have moved. It was really sad to me because we went in the summer here of 2017 with my kids and I was excited to show them what had me in awe but sadly I couldn’t pass that childhood memory on. I read a comment about modernizing the mall and it’s so true. They’re working so hard to make it “fit in” when the best aspect of the mall was how it stood out so uniquely. Still a great place to go to but sad to see some attractions are gone.

Cool story, West Edmonton Mall actually gave my family their theatrical poster of Spider-Man 2, they were about to throw it out at the end of its release so we asked for it instead. It was 2 stories high and we had it hung up in our house for 10 years, but eventually we thrown it out. Today, I search for a new grand sized movie poster to replace it with, and you can't really find that stuff anywhere. I scoff at the ones you try to buy online, they are ripoffs that come nowhere near the dimensions of the old poster and cant capture its glory and splendor

I never really knew the story about the dragon, I just noticed it wasn't there any more. And I'll check the channel out more, but maybe I'll find out why they stopped the fountains everywhere. I have to admit that aside from Playdium closing, the shutting down of the fountains for me was the day the mall truly transformed into a cold place of capitalism. No longer was it a place for people to enjoy going out... Funny thing, my girlfriend was so happy Victoria's Secret came to the mall. I wasn't, especially because I knew what it cost. The whale fountain. It was removed (again same with the fountain) in order to give families a place sit and relax while mommy went shopping for lingerie. I was mildly happy they replaced it in phase 1 but the placement didn't change my melancholy. You see as a teen I had my first kiss in the whales mouth. Despite how wrong that sounded it was with girl I chased to White Rock. While it didn't well the kiss I never forgot. Shortly after I noticed they were covering the fountains and were closing them all. I get why, likely for the same as the dragon, the costs of running the fountains. But like the dragon disappearing, the fountains, Playdium closed and revamping of Bourbon Street to me a trip to the mall is no longer a fun trip to a giant arcade or theater or just food fair along with fountains. To me the mall is now just a cold place to buy stuff now devoid of anything that made a trip to the mall fun...

I remember around 2010 2011 they were looking for an automation company to continue servicing it. It was a one off and I believe the original company was from Denver and had gone out of business. That dragon was my FAVORITE part of that mall when I was younger... I do sometimes wonder if they have the endoskeleton of the dragon stored somewhere for just in case. They should probably add more unique style back into the mall because that was what made it so popular and now the only thing that they seem to have that you don't see in other malls is Bubba Gump shrimp and the huge Lego store. And they removed one of my favorite stores collector's edge and turned it into a Christian book store for a while until the part was completely removed.

In 2005 my family took our first trip to Edmonton. We stayed at fantasyland and had so many good memories. One of which was that we were so excited to see the animatronic dragon. We live in a small town that has nothing like it. We climbed the stairs and were basically leaning over the rail at it in awe. That was until it breathed fire. We screamed. My dad pushed my mom, sister, and me in his attempt to run away. We laugh about it now but at 10 it was terrifying.

I just stumbled across this while looking into the mall since my parents used to take me here every year as an american to visit family on my dad's side. Over time we stopped going because the trip started becoming too expensive and my grandparents ended up passing. I've never been so depressed about this dragon that used to scare me from it breathing fire. Kinda wish I could go back in time to experience the dragon's show again. I remember watching night at the museum and getting the fire blown right at me while walking into the theater. Good times. I absolutely would have crowd funded to keep the dragon. It looks so empty and bare up there in the video. At least put something in it's place???? I've been planning on going back as an adult and taking my significant other with me but... man this really is an experience I can't share anymore :(

Nice video! I, too, miss the dragon. I was thinking "2005? That sound early" and I saw your correction, haha. But yeah, the theater looks SO BORING nowadays. Batman & Yoda are it! I never even noticed the long tongue going up the staircase. I remember working exactly two shifts in this place- a big training shift spread over two days, and they talked about the Dragon. But then, realizing that I would be a hobo at the wage they were paying me, I bailed and worked for Zellers (which wasn't MUCH better, but still). The main thing I remember was one kid telling us "This is the BEST JOB EVER- I do NOTHING and they pay me six dollars an hour!" and our trainer snidely going "Yeah, well I work HARD and make six-NINETY FIVE an hour". That was the moment I decided to quit, lol.

.... oh, and The person I overheard, while in line, was speaking to another fellow-movie-goer. He was dressed like a manager with a theater name tag, so i assumed, and that's about as far as i can go with my authenticity on that... but it always made for a great lore! ... Thanks for the sentimental video!

When I was younger ( definitely before 2005 I believe ) whenever we came to Edmonton for a day at west Ed ( It was once in a while ) we would go to the theatre to see a movie and I can remember just how much I loved it there. The dragon was by far my favourite part of the theatre and I can remember there would be times where we would be coming up the escalator to the theatre and it would be starting so it felt like you were entering into an area that was guarded by a dragon . It sucks that they don’t have that anymore it would have been awesom to be able to take my nieces and nephews there and show them some of the most memorable parts of our childhood

I have lived in Stony Plain for 10.5 years now and I remember when my dad had first taken me to the mall to show me the dragon (I'm 32). We were lucky and it was still breathing fire then. He took me to the second level and there was line you were suppose to stand behind. The heat coming from the flame was crazy. I also remember there being a burger king in the theatre and it would cost over $10 for a combo and that the concession stand was in the middle. I really hate how they have changed the mall, it used to be so much better. They had all those fish tanks at the Tim Horton's on the second level, the flamingo's.... and then they just disappeared. My young nieces will never know how cool the mall was, only how uncool it is now. I also remember visiting West Ed in the early 2000's and they had a go-kart laser tag which was so much fun!

Man that thing was frickin awesome, no video can ever do it justice... It was so awesome to see it every time I went to Wem. Wish it was still there, there's just an empty void left in its place, so sad... :/

Even today i look up remember being excited when i was a kid to see the dragon shoot fire and just seeing all the pieces around. And always wondered if anyone got burnt it they were right infront of it on the second level. Dragon maybe gone but the memory of it will never be.

It wasn't until I seen a few of these videos that I realized over the years I have seen or been in nearly all of the attractions that were removed even though I ived 4-6 hours away but the dragon was the one thing that blew me away and I remember the most, sad to see it gone. But does the video ever say where it went after they removed it?

I remember I was visiting my father in Edmonton and he took us(my little sister and me) to see the first Harry Potter movie(I think ot was my second time watching it). I'll never forget walking out of the wizarding world to then seeing a fire breathing dragon above me. Amazing.

Le-sigh. I remember this attraction. I was 3 when it opened. I remember my Mom and Dad taking me up there when I was little and shows were every 15 minutes. We saw it before the Shark Boy and Lava girl premier too, and every west Edmonton trip when we had the time. They should put a new one up, an updated version. The show was amazing and I wish I'd taken the time to see one of it's last shows before they took it down.

I have an experience that is the single greatest experience of all time. Apocalypse now, director's cut, imax, first time seeing, on the afternoon of 09/11. now imagine the first thing you see when leaving the theatre is that dragon, so yeah. Jumped back something fierce.

I worked in this theater when it was Silver City to Scotiabank Theare. The reason explained to me by management was that the dragon was impossible to repair. The one guy who did maintanance on it retired and didn't pass on information on where to get the parts, when management looked for alternatives it was too costly.

I'm only 18 now but I remember being terrified of the dragon everytime we went to the theater. I used to get very anxious while we were waiting in the lobby, because I just wanted to get out of there before the music started playing the show began. It's sad to think that I never really got a chance to appreciate it now that I'm older.

They took out all of the interesting parts of the mall. Used to love the look of the Imax theatre with the dragon, playdium was awesome, PJs pets with all of the cute puppies, kites and other delights, Johnny Rockets...I also remember always going to hmv with my dad and going to the games workshop to watch the guys play warhammer. Those were the days!

Seeing the dragon in action in ‘99 was mind blowing. It seemed such a state of the art theatre when it first opened. Funny , as soon as the dragon started up , everyone would stop and look up in awe. Even from the main level that heat was intense 😓

There’s still a silver city in my city. It had 3 animatronic guys suspended in the air. One with wings, another riding a robotic bird and a plane that all had lights and movement 24/7. They shut them down a few years back and I think they were removed. It’s sad really. I remember going to the movies at night and seeing them move around and makes noises

I worked at silver city the year that it opened, it was my first job. I worked in the concession. The music was so annoying at the time hearing it every 15 minutes all day. But now that I look back, it's the thing that I most loved working there and miss the most. I don't go there now, its not the same at all anymore.
