Since FSD 13.2.2 can see better than a human, it makes no sense for FSD to ask the human to take over in torrential rain but it's happening. FSD 12.5 was horrible in rain so I'm not complaining.

Love your content, Lars. One comment - light is photons and cameras, lidar, biological eyes, etc. all detect photons as part of their vision or ranging systems. Cameras and humans use multiple displaced photon detectors and the effect of binocular disparity to determine distance to an object (or multi-ocular disparity in the case of having more than binocular vision).

I just bought a 2025 m3 long range, rear wheel drive. I learned that trickle charging ( 120v 12A) at home is best way to preserve the battery. I expect 98% of range to be retained after 200,000 miles, and at my usage rate, that will be the year 2055.

Lars, In Germany where in many places on the autobahn there is no speed limit and the time between a camera seeing an object (250m) and being able to stop the car may not be enough. I can't find any documentation that Tesla external cameras use infrared. Yes in the cabin for checking on driver attentiveness, but not for autopilot/FSD use on external cameras

Tesla's camera uses an unfiltered and red filter pixel sensor. The unfiltered pixels just detect photons no matter the wavelengths and the red filter detects wavelength below green. So the camera picks up infrared but it does not distinguish them from the red color.

At worst Tesla could add infrared red emitters. If a human can’t see something why would FSD be required to? The bottom line is money talks. It’s possible Insurance will settle the matter with different rates for different systems.

What they show on the screen is a "visualizer". It's not the key of the system. It's just whatever they can do to show you what it is thinking. However, what's going on in FSD's head is much more complex. There is limited compute on the car, so they may well have limited views on the screen as opposed what it is actually thinking. None of the data in the brain is in an easy format to simply display. You have to process it to make it show up. When it's thinking hardest, the compute is limited, so the visualizer is restricted. Eh, that's just how it works.

Nvidia only controls the hardware/software and not the data to the service sold to the end-user. Do expect competition for Nvidia to emerge. XAI and Tesla own the other parts of the chain from data to service to the end user where the money is made. So it definitely makes sense longer term for Nvidia to participate while in the short term XAI and Tesla probably enjoy preferential treatment.

Yeah, Li Auto's comment about Tesla FSD makes no sense. He seems to think the way FSD works is it just follows invisible tracks like a train, coupled with basic "collision avoidance" algorithms, basically no different from Waymo. Which is obviously completely wrong, because FSD dynamically reacts to road events all the time - cars, pedestrians, cyclists, pets, obstructions, collisions - all through camera-only vision. If the CEO of Li Auto can drive at night in China with just his eyes and no LIDAR implants connected to his brain, then FSD will be able to drive at night in China just fine with camera-only vision.

In 5-8 years Tesla will probably stop selling cars. Why sell a car for $18k profit when you can rent it out as a Cab for $33k profit a year for 3 years? Tesla Cab will take over the transportation industry. Imagine paying just $0.35/mile be driven anywhere you need to go. No gas, no insurance, no tire wear, no driving. The same thing, perhaps to lessor extent, applies to Apple or Google. The question is not "SUPERIORITY" but rather necessity and utility. Both Apple or Google as well as various communication and banking/financial services and others (like Amazon, etc.) have the money and the talent to buy, build, and operate (or outsource) whatever computing resources they need to operate their businesses, just like Tesla.

What is missing from this debate , even with Tesla Bulls like you and including Jeff Lutz, is the concept of BigQ, Quality at system level, which at its heart has 'integration'. Tesla has at its core, an integrative strategy that even Elon Musk fails to explicitly state. The implicit Tesla Paradigm can be stated as Our mission is to maximise the Essential Value added to humanity through the integrated use of all forms of energy at continually reducing Loss to Society' This explains why Elon Musk is engaging in DOGE, as much of 'Loss to Society' lies on the way we organise it. 'Loss to Society' is defined as the loss of time, limited resources, misplaced ingenuity and forgone opportunity arising from the creation of the non-essential value arising from not doing the right thing right every time, on a balance of probabilities. 80% of all Tesla’s in the world have HW3. V13.x.x does not work on HW3. Musk has said that V12.6 will be the highest version for HW3. It’s only fair that Tesla upgrades all the FSD HW3 cars to AI4-AI5 chips and cameras. Musk could pay for this out of his $400 billion treasure chest he is holding and it would only be a rounding error for his accountants. We paid $8000 for our Model 3 FSD and another $10,000 for our Model Y FSD. We still don’t have what was advertised by Tesla and now our hardware is incapable of running V13.x.x. Hopefully the richest person in the world will do the right thing and upgrade his loyal customers to AI4-AI5.

Maybe Tesla will do that. Actually I hope so. Possibly 3rd parties, but that seems unlikely. I do sympathize. I have two cars, one 35 years old and another 30 (with 335,000 miles driven). No updates there; just thankful for parts. My computer only runs Catalina. It used to be top-of-the-line; still works fine, but no more updates there for the OS or many of the apps it runs. IT technology simply evolves fast. I do have a suggestion though. Your Tesla vehicles have batteries equivalent to at least 3-6, maybe more, Powerwalls. When Tesla releases bi-directional charging, those cars will become very useful for home power backup. That alone, rather than AI5 replacement, will help them hold their current value.
