Reason why singers may say they are from South India specifically and not India in general is most likely because of the difference in traditional music styles of both places. Carnatic music style is more prevalent in the South of India while Hindustani is the style most prevalent in other parts of India. What ever direction people may speak of, South, North-east or whatever, all are Indian and proud of that.

Whenever I talk to someone who is not Indian, I always introduce myself saying that I'm Indian but she said South India like it is a different country. I never even think about saying things like I'm from north India.

@@foodiefomo Watch again and see when he says that. "I think you are from India." He guessed it because of her voice and the way she was dressing. She should have accepted that and just said yes. I think it is just common to divide everything based on language and culture. There is no one common language in the south, and people there somehow think that they are better than the rest of India. I've never heard anyone say I'm from north India to anyone; even in India, we just name the state in national competitions.

I have been outside India for work multiple times, and this is very common with southern Indians. Not only they would like to be specific about being southern Indian and not just Indian but they would love to claim every possible Indian origin thing with being originally from southern parts. 😀
