You might really want to look at the MSRP on all the other bikes out there to re align your thought on what is expensive. New Honda 450L: $10399. Beta 480 RR race: $9999.
@jameskiceiii68564 жыл бұрын
He did a review on the Honda 450 and basically called it an overpriced red almost-ktm. The crf450 is trying to compete with the beta and ktms thus is expensive like they are. Anywhere near 10k is a lot of freaking money for a dirt bike.

Great review. Regarding being faster on the DRZ, I'm sure it's because you're more comfortable on it, and maybe because the course wasn't something that highlights the strengths of a bike (gnarly single track, where weight really matters). Like you and Berry say - it's the rider not the bike. Most motorcycles these days are excellent and most average riders can (or are willing to) only ride to 50-60% of the bikes capability, so it doesn't matter that one bike is 20% better than another one. One personal example is that I have a 2013 KTM 200 and a buddy of mine has a 2002 KTM 200. Aside from the e-start on the newer bike, they feel almost the same, despite one being twice the price of the other.

Sir that bike fits you, looks really really sweet, love it. MAN O MAN, it looks fast.. Umm, I don't think at this point in the game you can call yourself a average rider, you have the best practice playing field in the US and you are doing quite well my friend. 10 grand is not bad for a bike as good as it looks like it would be considering the new honda 450 is in the 10 grand price mark as well, i was saddened to see that being the price on the new honda. Man buddy, we got us a Jeep. It fits the family and wife better, I still have the Africa twin, but the wife and I have been having so much fun with the Jeep we haven't rode the AT much this year. Great bike, but doesn’t really belong in the dual sport range... Oil plus filter and valve adjustment every 30 hours, piston and other related change every 90 hours. The reliability is by far not of a dual sport, but of a race bike, because that’s what it is. Loved watching the video, though! :-)
@Stryker4256 жыл бұрын
Turn signals does not a dual sport make. What is the oil capacity? Maintenance intervals? How strong is the subframe? Aftermarket adventure support? Fuel capacity? Fuel economy? Yes, economy can vary, but 2 gallons at 70mpg or 3 gallons at 50mpg is very different than 2 gallons at 35mpg. I suspect that, like the new CRF450L, this is an enduro bike, and not really a dual sport. Just my two cents.

Its not dual sport... its a pure enduro. Exactly the same as my 250RR 2 stroke that has lights, whistles and 100% road legal. 480RR oil change ~5-10 hours at offroad conditions like any other 4T enduro bike. Never compare to KTM 690/ Husqvarna701/DRZ, KLR or any other dual sport. 480RR category = KTM 450/500EXC. KTM EXC vs LC4(dual sport) are like night and day.

Being lucky enough to ride one, I will agree I was disappointed. I consider it an updated DR650 (which I've owned). But then that's coming from someone who rides a Husky 350, so take it as an unfair comparison to a bike that is as nimble as a downhill mountain bike.

Would love a bike with more power than the DRZ however the main concern I have with these high tech bikes are the fuel mileage and how far can it go without putting one of those oversized tanks on. The DRZ and DR can go 140miles plus which for me who likes to ride from a coastal area to the mountains and hit the alpine trails is huge. Another concern can it ride 12 plus hours a day, day after day with minimal maintenance? Bikes like the 690, 701 and AJP have very wide turn radius' and are a challenge for the tight mountain switchback. The DRZ and DR are awesome machines and fills all my needs I just wish they had that awesome power I crave for the street. Weight is not much of an issue for me so spending the 10k plus for these high tech bikes is too much knowing that I will have to give up some of the awesomeness that is provided by the DR and DRZ.

Hate to be picky but the Beta, along with many of the bikes of that ilk are Enduro bikes not dual sports. ENDURO is off road racing where the bike has to be used on public roads and therefore has to be registered, mainly in the rest of the world, think Romaniacs, ISDE, the type of bikes Graham Jarvis, Johnny Walker, Chris Birch, to name a few ride, they are street registered race bikes. A dual sport is not a race bike. The world is so confusing now ,enduro bikes are dual sports and an adventure bikes have to be 250kg and have over 100 horsepower. Where will it all end.
@hotsauce37006 жыл бұрын
Nice review for sure but I’d like to add my opinion to the mix. As dual sport bikes have their place, they do not excell at either the street or dirt and about the only advantage is getting you to trails if you happen to live halfway close to them. Where I live, I’d be wore out riding on the street before I’d make it to the trail head. What I’m saying is, it’s hard to beat a truck and a motocross bike set-up. Get to the trail ready to ride and ride till you’re tired then load up and head home.
@jameskiceiii68564 жыл бұрын
For a lot of people in a lot of places the best riding or the riding that they want to do is actually public roads that require a tag.

I've sold my soul to own new KTMs, to include a 2016 350 EXC and a 2017 250 XC-W, but not after spending the same amount of money to own, break and rebuild used KTMs. It's not just the $10k to 12K of the purchase price of a new bike, but the extremely short maintenance intervals of these amazing european bikes. A steering stabilizer and the right tires for what you're riding can change everything along with getting the suspension revalved for your weight and riding style.

Tires always made it massive difference for me I'd like to see this explored a little further. Hard compound tires could be squirrely on hardpack for sure...nice ghost riding with you. DRZ? For me, it is without a doubt one of the most boring bikes I have ever ridden. I guess it all depends what "motorcycle background" one is coming from. I have always ridden Beta, SWM and Husqvarna. One day I swapped my SWM with a DRZ because I heard so much about it and I wanted to try.it. I just couldn't believe it. Incredibly boring. But, what's more I kept on thinking ... life cannot be this bad. No, no and no. The DRZ did remind me of the fruit mixer I have at home. I think if one grows up with bikes such as Beta, Husqvarna, Beta and KTM, the same person is never going to like or get used to a DRZ or KLR, etc ... It's impossible. If you're used to drinking good read wine, you are not going to get used drinking grape juice. But Beta, Ktm, etc .. are more expensive. You get what you pay for.

This is a low maintenance motocross bike. Comfortable? No. Fuel thrifty. No. Fast, light, responsive in dirt, wash and single trail and more fun than a DRZ. YES. DRZ - tractor. Beta - Trophy truck. If you use it predominantly for fast, tight single trails. Winning with a smile.
@toltod5 жыл бұрын
There is one point I didn't hear. Beta motorcycles seem to always be 2/3 the size of a comparable KTM/Husky. Being a taller fella, I went the the Husqvarna route. Beta would have been my choice, but it just felt small. And that's coming from someone who also owns a newer fuel injected XT250. Really wanted one, but I just couldn't get over the smaller size making them ideal for riders shorter than my 6'3" stature.

Ghost race results show that most of our talents are the limiting factor, and familiarity means a lot. And that means, usefully to me, to blow away the fog that makes me think a lighter, newer bike will make a huge and immediate difference. I don't see the point of doing a timed loop if you don't have a control tyre, it makes such an enormous difference. The planted feeling comes from their trials background, it's legendary ;-)

IT'S NOT ONLY THE RIDER , THE BIKE ALSO HAS TO BE GOOD. DIRT BIKE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE SO EXPENSIVE, AFTER ALL YOU HAVE TO FALL HERE AND THERE. I THINK THE JAPANESE ARE PERFECT.

Every time tyler post a damn video of a new bike vs a DRZ, he ends up saving me $$$$$$. im in the same boat. In flowly desert terrain, im fastest on the DRZ because ive been riding it for nearly 9 years! In Wet,muddy east coast single track, not so much.

Why would you want to buy a brand new dirt bike anyway. You can pick up a used Bera RR for half the MSRP and it will still beat your brand new DRZs and CRFs

Looks like fun but I'd rather throw a leg over Katsumi any day. "Built not Bought" baby!

As always thank you for your videos. I follow you and Barry the most out of all KZbin. One thing I would like to ad to the unfortunate detail about Beta is there are no Beta shops. I can buy a Beta here in Seattle and it does come with a one year warranty but no one to fix the bike. My buddy is having some electrical issues with his brand new Italian princess and having to pay for it to get fixed by a KTM dealership. Just a small detail but kind of sucks cuz I really want to buy a Beta but not sure what to do if mine had a little bug in the beginning of it’s break in

I’m thinking about selling my TE630 , it’s only done 3000mi, and getting a Beta. 🏁

Ok, there it is, a cheap old DRZ works as well as anything. Yes i have both Beta 500 and DRZ e and the DRZ with old hard rounded tires is stable where the Beta plows and stalls. The Betas have issues period and no one will address the issue.

That Beta was totally hobbled by those tires. They are marginally better than a street tire. I've used those tires on a DRZsm for about a year and were fine for getting me off the pavement but weren't to be pushed. You got a lot right about the bike and the video was excellent as always, but there waa so much you missed out on because of the tires.

I haven't seen your videos for a while. Watching this one reminds me of just how good they are. The experience in filming, which shows. All the angles. The decent, info packed voice over. The terrain and... well, you. Reminds me when I first got into motorcycles a couple of years ago...i was taken quickly down the dual sport worm hole by everide vids.

I'll stick to the DRZ and the KLR I just can't see me paying that much for a gelato hahaha!!!

Hopefully he put a seat concepts seat on it before you rode it. As you witnessed on my 300RR the Beta seats serve only as a reminder to stay up on the pegs. Laziness will reward you with a sore, bruised butt for a few days..lol

Thanks so much for your time and efforts regarding the Beta which rates high on my list. One thing I believe you did not mention or I may have missed , can you talk about the maintenance schedule. Most important would be time frames for valve adjustments and bottom end rebuilds. That seems to be the issue when comparing the old school Japanese DS to the new high tech European bikes. It always a trade off. But I sometimes prefer reliability of say a WR 250 r or DRZ to the sweetness of the current European bikes Thanks, Rich

Wow , I did not know that you ride duel sport . I see you turn pristine desert into endless spiderweb of paths to no where in particular but a ghetto in an otherwise pristine countryside trashed . Hope your happy looking at that as your Nabors who just as soon see you somewhere else , hot shot .

Having rode in some of the places you ride and being a level worse rider I can say with almost certainty that tires can make all the difference in the world. And the stiffer lighter bikes do feel sketchy at higher speeds

Considering how much you talk about it’s beuty and how rare it is, we sure didn’t get to much of it aside from the dash.
