If he is having minor. It will be minor form for lifetime, which is heterozygous state. Minor will not get converted to intermediate or major which is homozygous state.

Hassan Gul might be due to anemia or/and micronutrient deficiency. Document iron stores. Take vitB12 and folic acid lifetime. Iron, too, if found deficient.

Hope your heart might be good. Such borderline levels of hemoglobin doesn’t affect heart much. However, do an echocardiogram for heart health assessment

No. The second baby would be the same as the first one. Build up vitB12, folic acid, pyridoxine, vitD level of the first baby. His hemoglobin is low. Get his ferritin level tested as well.

Yes. Sometimes electrophoresis test is normal but clinically the patient is thalassemic. We prescribe Gene mutations testing. It's also helpful for prenatal diagnosis.

nabiul khan at the max, your baby could inherit one gene if HbE from you and Thalassemia minor beta gene from your wife. He’d be a compound heterogeneous. The symptoms would be mild to moderate. Get the hemoglobin electrophoresis test of the baby, one year after birth

Assalamualikum. I have BTM and 22 weeks pregnant. Hb level is 7.3. And serum ferritin is 5.74. The gynae doctor said i cant take iron infusion due to this trait. But i consulted a hematologist she said that i can get iron infusions/venofer because iron is too low and if hb didnt go up by iron infusion then go for blood transfusion.

You should take iron infusion. Your hematologist is correct. Oral iron would take a long time to build stores and correct hemoglobin. First start injectable then shift to oral preparations

A very imp video idea on this topic: "Pregnancy with beta thalasemia trait" This is very important as most gynae docotors dont have much information about thalasemia trait in pakistan. 3 to 4 gynae doctors told me that the only option thalasemia trait patients have is blood transfusion in case of low hb. They never bothered to check the iron levels. Even after seeing the my ferritin report which clearly indicated extremely low iron levels they said that i canot take iron infusions as it can lead to iron overload.... it was difficult to convince them that BTT patients can have iron deficiency too...thank god i consulted a hematologist.

My question is if i get pregnant, can I know if the upcoming child would be minor? If yes, can I just abort the pregnancy legally because the unborn is minor? If one of the couple is minor. Then there is no issue. You can continue with every pregnancy.

25% chances are that you will have a thalassemia minor child. 75% chances are you will be having normal children. No need to abort a thalassemia minor child. If your partner is from your relatives, you should get yourself negative with genetic mutations testing. Sometimes, electrophoresis shows a normal pattern but the person is carrying a mild mutations gene.
