It'v very interesting how Yooka and Laylee didn't have a double jump in early builds. Instead, they activate the glide move when there should be a double jump. Take a look: 11:37 It's actually impossible to do in the Final Game, because you have to activate it by holding jump _after_ a _Double Jump._

Most of the problems with Yooka Laylee are all due to one thing: nostalgia factor. It replicates how 3D platformers on the N64 used to be so well that it also brings the problems of N64 3D platformers.

Maybe I'm just blind (or an idiot) but I really don't see such apparently game marring problems that some people seem to complain about, aside from the camera. Controls are well done, gameplay is fun, quick, and very satisfying in exploration and in (simple) combat, collectables are entertaining to grab and charming to even see, the characters are well made and just as entertaining. Honestly, I never got the game based on nostalgia, but on the honest belief that it would be a great game (and as far as I'm concerned after playing it, it is) This is coming from a guy that never really grew up with Banjo... Hell, I haven't even played Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie until about three years ago when I picked them up from the XBLA, and they played decently despite the prior N64 limits. My only real nostalgia for 3D platformers comes from Spyro, but since YL is supposed to take inspirations from and spiritually succeed Banjo, it's obviously not nostalgia targeting someone like me, if at all.

There are two sides in Yooka-Laylee: The one side who think it's great & a comeback to the platformer genre.... Or the other who think this is terrible, outdated, and cashes in on the nostalgia. This is like the Zack Snyder of video games.
@franzpattison7 жыл бұрын
The Omnilution 2.0. I can see that the developers put a lot of care into it but from what I can see of the many reviews I've watched it still suffers from the same issue plaguing almost all games released these days, a pathological tendency to rush it out before the sharp corners are polished down. "Check out the video "Yooka-Laylee is a bad game" to see the sort of things I mean. It actually has me convinced not to play it, considering how they missed the mark in so many aspects.
@1Synner7 жыл бұрын
Which is a shame so many people like to shit on Yooka-Laylee as if it were some MN9 fiasco 'cause at least YL is honestly a very good game in its own right. Oh well, maybe check it out when you have some money to burn and it's on sale, or something.
@UnicornStorm7 жыл бұрын
It's a very functional game.... For the most part it works as intended.... but as a collectathon it does pretty much everything wrong. Worlds are bland and empty, collectibles are just thoughtlessly scattered around (aside from the one dickisch quill that got placed where only masochists would try to look), special moves or the corresponding puzzles are badly conveyed. It did try to cash in on nostalgia... or maybe just relied too much on nostalgia which prevented it from having it's own identity. It isn't as bad as Mighty No. 9, but than again, not much is ;-P
@mountaindewslave7 жыл бұрын
I agree with Unicorn. Collectithon 3D platformers are fun when each individual world is proportionately a good size where you enjoy exploring without it getting too tedious. Along with that the art and characters need to be extremely well thought out for the player to accept the world, even as silly as it may be, and to enjoy looking all over it. I think what frustrates people about Yooka Laylee is that it in many respects does things worse than the games that came long before it (Banjo, Conker's), yet it also fails to really successfully bring much new. In the end that makes it a moderately solid game. Not terrible, not great
@foeof6 жыл бұрын
No, there's more sides than that. The majority of people are on the side that the game is just complete shit, not entertaining or worth anyone's time in this modern age.

If he could find video of Plague of Shadows at the PAX East before its release, that would be amazing. I played it there, and the game was COMPLETELY different from the final, with pretty major removed gameplay aspects. Originally you collected items for alchemy, like dirt from dirt blocks, and at checkpoints you could cook potions, some of which had effects just like the red vials in the final game, as in a life up until you die. You would maintain these alchemy materials but not potion effects upon death. I would LOVE to see a video about that.

It's honestly quite sad that this game has become as controversial as it has. It just goes to show that no matter how good a crowdfunded indie game is on it's own, a helping of people raising their expectations excessively high based on the developers' past reputations and a little dash of behind the scenes drama being made public are all it apparently takes for half the internet to completely turn against it and blow its flaws *way* out of proportion...

This is an awesome video thanks for taking the time to make it! Yooka-Laylee to me is good however it seems way more frustrating than enjoyable at a lot of parts especially with the roll move you have to use all the time & the camera snapping behind you instead of objects transparency fading out like in the old games. In Banjo Kazooie the ramps felt necessary to get to certain places whereas Yooka Laylee just puts them EVERYWHERE & the controls are so sensitive it's easy to fuck up. I really hope Playtonic make another game though.

I feel like Yooka Laylee gets a bad rap. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It's only 'bad' because so many people got their expectations up super high because of who was making it. Not to mention it straight up being called a "spiritual successor to Banjo Tooie". I don't blame people for having those expectations, I blame Playtonic for that. What I DO blame people for though, is acting like the game is horrible just because it's not as good as they expected it to be. There's a difference between an actual bad game, and a game that's not as good as another game. It's like saying Assassin's Creed Valhalla is bad because "it's not as good as Odyssey". Or whatever similar set of games you wanna use. It not being as good as the other one, doesn't automatically make it bad. It's still a good game in it's own right. Yooka Laylee ain't as good as Banjo Kazooie. It ain't even as good as Banjo Tooie. But it's still a decent game. Maybe it's not amazing, but it's definitely far from bad. Judge the game on it's own, not compared to Banjo, or because of who made it. Side note: My stance on Jontron is that they should have kept his voice in the game.

Super Link Bro well... The game is not great,but its not bad,have some issues like the camera that suck and the bosses are uncreative and absolutely nothing compared to the BK/BT bosses (not forgettinng that BK/BT arent the only games that rare made...)but still a fun game to play.

Super Link Bro not worth it. Get the first two banjo games on the Xbox, cheaper and in the end actually better made. Or hat in time, a much better example of “modern 3D platformer”

great video! its so weird looking back at how different the game is now than how it used to be in the trailers. i remember so clearly watching the trailers when they came out, but i didnt realize how much has changed! im surprised you never mentioned the short "ice world" theme grant composed and then scrapped later tho ( i think he said he wasnt happy with how it sounded too much like banjo kazooie)

FINALLY! Betting most of that was reworking the script multiple times, and then proceeding to render and then have to rerender after Jontron.
@jacobbelyea79457 жыл бұрын
Theironsword JonTron was never rendered. He was the guy in the port a potty. His model and lines were kept the same, just the voice was changed from JonTron's to a different voice.

You have no clue what rendering means in video terms, do you? I meant render as in the video. You know, compile the video into an uploadable state?
