Wishbone Ash in a live TV performance from 1971 featuring two songs.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded between from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on KZbin or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

Been listening to this band since I was 14. I'm 66 now. I bought their debut album for £2 from my mum's catalogue and paid for it in instalments of 10p per week. I've still got the album so I've been playing it for 52 years. I saw Andy Powell and his current British line up at Buxton recently and they were absolutely fantastic. Did the whole Argus album. This band were and are still the epitome of British rock music.

Wow! That's amazing! I'm 44 so I missed the mark by a few years haha. Discovered these guys in my early 20's when I started realizing that 70's rock was where my heart is. Over here in America, if you bring up Wishbone Ash to the average Joe they haven't even heard of them. Such a talented group and deserve more recognition.

Back in the early '70's I was the drummer in Beggars Opera, a very popular East Coast band. We had three guitarists up front doing triple leads. Besides original material and covers of a selected number of Bands, WA was one of our favorites. We would open our show with this number and I sang it. Lots of great memories. This band was WAY ahead of their time.

Saw WA with BOC, Uriah Heep, and Nazareth in 1993. The seats we had were decent but they also turned out to be right on the aisle that that bands exited and entered the stage on. When WA finished, they came walking up and Ted was closest so I went to edge of the aisle and said "Hey Ted, I fuckin love you, man!" and he actually took a few steps back to extend his hand and say "Thank you!" and gave me a cool nod. Andy then nodded, too. I couldn't help. I screamed "ANDYYYYYYYY" and he just laughed and nodded again. Also, when Nazareth walked up the stairs, I yelled to Pete Agnew "Pete, where to next!!??" and he screamed back "FUCK ALL, PENNSYLVANIA!" LOLOL

@@steffanhoffmann What? First of all, know that I'm a big fan of the Allmans, and I've also been playing guitar for over 50 years...I'm 66. First of all, their music is completely different and comparisons become ridiculous. Second that the work of the guitars are absolutely different and nobody copied anybody. The richness of guitar work in WA, melodically and harmonically, where one rarely does the same things as the other, the richness of tones, the technique full of subtleties by Andy and Ted. The Allmans even because they are within a south rock identity, don't have the richness and maybe don't even need tones and they always use the same ones, let me say in passing that they influenced a bunch of other guitarists from bands like Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels... .and they all looked alike. The Allmans' big difference compared to any other band is that they were great improvisers and created music within music, particularly Duanne who was the most inspired. And in that they were unbeatable. Also remember one detail. Look at the date both bands came out. Ps. Allman Joys wasn't ABB, not to mention nobody knew them. And besides, do you really think that at that time someone wanted to copy someone else or preferred to have their own identity? No man, nobody copied anybody in this case.

I watched this on "The old grey whistle test" at the time. At 09.00 the following morning I rushed down to my local record store and bought the "Pilgrimage" album which is where these two tracks come from. I've bought almost everything they done since then. Throughout the years I've seen them live on a number of occassions twice with the original line up, and they have never failed to deliver. With the release of "Argues" they were probably the best British band around, but for some unknown reason they couldn't quite sustain that success even though their next 4/5 albums were received with positive reviews and were all decent albums they just couldn't find that manic formula again. Historically though they were and still are one of the greatest bands of all time.

@@yeticus1 What an angry reply. Is it because UK finds itself alone; and very expensive to live in? I understand as I left shortly after the brexit vote result. Travelled a bit, lived in Kyiv one year and Odessa three. Loved Odessa, the climate and its history etc. Left there ten months before vladolf putler invaded. A hunch. Since then lived in Alanya 🇹🇷 region of the beautiful Med Sea climate. 320 sunny days a year and heavenly. Sept 20th yesterday it was 36c. No rain since 6th May... wow imagine. I'm 15 mins walk from here 👍 All year round it's pretty much the same. (This video about Nov 2022). Warm to 🔥 ☀ My dad worked on the Ford Ghia all models. A German engineer. We lived in Tampa Bay 🇺🇸 for three years, when I was a junior, before being transferred back to London. Sold my place in Kensington and Chelsea; because you can't take it 👉 💷 with you. Brits are obsessed about how much their property is worth, live frugally, die; and fail to take advantage of that equity. In UK, I'd had enough of being dictated to; by minority groups. BLM, feminists, bla de bla. It's much more relaxing; after having left. I left after brexit, a stupid little englander decision. However I'm grateful for my British education. I don't live in UK 🇬🇧 anymore I'm in a better climate. I play 🎾 with my friends from Western Europe and Scandinavia. Sit outside cafes with them, discussing politics, sport bla de bla. They all speak English, most do in that part of the world; for decades. I cycle everywhere, on a fantastic boulevard, beachfrontage infrastructure. www.alanya1.com/en/bicycle-routes-in-alanya Finally, the dreary weather in UK DOES affect thinking. Also personal appearance, with most UK people possessing dark circles; under their eyes. (Lack of sunlight) you don't notice it until you leave. Not so where I've been; and am currently. Lastly everything is two thirds cheaper to live here. Brit tourists told me that recently. For food etc. My rent overlooking the Med, is 400 euros on a 12 month winter commencing contract. Cheaper that method as no tourism December to March. I am on a beautiful complex and have indoor and outside pools. Gym, jacuzzi, games room, massage facilities. My last bill for electric and water in August was £24 or so combined. 1960s prices I'd suggest. Cigarettes for a single pack of 20 £1.35. I don't smoke but it's a good gauge for prices. @@steffanhoffmannI don't recognize Weather Report as a progressive or jazz rock band. In the early 70s, jazz rock had real representatives like the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Eleventh House, Tony Williams Lifetime, Return To Forever, when this one became a quartet... Okay, man. We already know that you don't like Wishbone Ash nor do you find them relevant, except for an album...if you really know Argus or are just reproducing what they're already tired of saying and you can find it in any review about them. @@stuanhay That influence in rock and blues, I mean the folk aspect, has always captivated me. Especially with the great 70's bands. A prime example is Jethro Tull. I really wish these guys would have gotten more recognition, however, my wish lays in a heap of ashes on the floor of history (I apologize). But no, we had to anoint "punk" as the new savior of rock.
