Nicholas McCullough He's a testament that it's not about how you pick, it's how the sound is produced. I mean, I've seen the strictest of pinky-anchorers attempt to replicate his sounds to no avail. Friedman, if you're reading this, you rock!

"Its really easy to be technical; I mean, its a lot of hard work but its easy to do because all it is is just meticulous practice. But I think its a lot more rare to have someone whos really got their own sound because thats something you cant practice. You cant practice your own sound, you just wind up doing it. The reason that hes so awesome is because he doesnt care about scale this and theory that. He makes a tune thats sounds nice to his ears. He changes scales and invents his own for nearly all his solos and thats why hes one of the more talented guys in the business. Who cares if Chris Broderick knows all the fancy theory, this guy is awesome all on his own.

I hold my pick like Paul Gilbert does now. I saw a video of the way he does it now. He said he used to do the traditional "thumb on top, two fingers on bottom" but after like 15 years of playing, he switched to something else that helps you control the pick a lot more and you can pinch a bit easier. Marty is focused on upstrokes more when he picks.

that's wild!! a grouping of 4 then 5 twice. Then that little chromatic thing he says,"youcan do as many times as you want" that is two groupings of 5. He stated in Exotic Guitar groupings of 5 were what he feels is the key. Ace and uli expounded on 5 groupings . You can think of groupings and keep adding notes or do different positions an come up with your own riffs .Most classic rock Jimmy page riffs are groupings of 5 ,any thoughts on this ?

@bendy44 There's no pick in his hand I looked at the vid very closely on a 60" HD flat screen. He starts off with his open hand on the guitar, then he pulls it away open and points his opened hand down vertically. No pick as gravity would of taken over. If you start and stop the vid while he plays and look closely, you can see he uses his grown out thumb nail and somtimes his 1st finger nail to play. As for tone, nails are very hard besides you'd see the pick when rotates his hand 90 degres

eddie van halen contributed the falling...tapping, the use of delayed effects, reverb, flanger, he gave the unique feels of dive bombing and using a humbucker with a whammy bar. he introduced harmonics (artifical and natural) he basically introduced a new way of playing guitar and launched a thousand clones kindve invented shreddign. DIME well he was really good at metal style guitar. he wasnt quite as influental but he knew what he was doing and develped his own stlye with varying effects

Extra tension? He even talked about it. It was his idea to position his right hand like that, so the pick wouldn't make too much noise especially during fast alternate picking.
