Dear Ms. Atazadeh, this is a great video going over the differences between both self-publishing companies. I've recently published my first book and had a nightmare scenario involving both of them. I went in with the false assumption that Barnes and Nobles Press operates similar to KDP and an author can publish with them and Ingramsparks together for print books. They can, but with a catch. It all came down to an issue of ISBNs. Barnes and Nobles not only uses the same printer but also shares the same ISBN registry. If an author uses ISBNs they've purchased and registered on Booker on Barnes and Nobles or Ingramsparks, neither company will let you upload a book if the other has registered it first. KDP will. I uploaded first to KDP, then to Barnes and Nobles, however when I went to Ingramsparks once I had all the files finalized and ready to upload, I couldn't because my print copies' ISBNs were already registered to Barnes and Nobles. I wanted to go with a wide distribution and pre-order, but couldn't because Ingramsparks was claiming that the ISBNs were already registered and wouldn't allow me to upload my files. I discovered this issue two months before release day, and to fix it, there were only two options. Either assign the books new ISBNs to print through Ingramsparks, or go through Ingramsparks's transfer process where with permission from me, recording the ISBN numbers, and putting in who the current publisher was, they can transfer the data from the current publisher to Ingramsparks. I chose to go through with the transfer process to save the ISBNs I'd purchase, only to realize the transfer process takes a month to complete. During which time, an author can only wait until they are informed if the transfer goes through. Fortunately, the transfer completed on time before release day (two weeks before) however it did teach me something. Authors can decide to use the free ISBN self-publishing companies offer and that can probably avoid this issue, or use new ISBNs each time they upload. However, if they want more control and own their own ISBNs, this is something that can be blindsiding. Just want to share in case you ever wanted to go wide with your books on Barnes and Noble Press and discover this same issue with Ingramsparks. It may require you to use or purchase more ISBNs or go through their transfer process.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, but in reverse. I tried to upload to Ingramspark then decided to go with B&N, and discovered my ISBN was being held captive by IngramSpark. I had to sacrifice that ISBN after IngramSpark failed to get back to me in time for my publishing date.

You nailed it. I'm not using Barnes and Noble again because even though they offer print preorders they don't ship those orders until days after the release date and my readers didn't get their books for 2 weeks after release. I expected they would ship it early so it would arrive on release day. So, even though KDP didn't allow print preorders, my readers got their KDP print books 2-3 days after ordering on the release date. So, none of the work to get the preorders ready for Barnes and Noble paid off if the books got to the readers almost 2 weeks after KDP. It's no longer worth it for me.

An amazing accomplishment for me in the last few years. Whenever I didn't do film photography, or hockey. I finally pushed myself for me to write my debut novel, in which I've learned from Brian Russell. Actually, I've never used IngramSpark but I use B&N Press to publish my book, which didn't take this long back last month. It's not that bad compared to the other one.

Barnes and Noble press is really giving me a hard time. I purchased ISBN codes from Bowker, and it kept telling me one of my ISBN codes was already used. I thought that was the whole point of an ISBN numbers is to be universally used, a Barnes & Noble prohibits you from using an ISBN that you've already used on another platform so I had to use one of theirs. Does anyone think that will be confusing having two paperback copies under two different ISBN numbers? And do I have to put Nook publishing on my copyright page now?
