Read online today about the theatre thingy of the supposed meeting of Joplin and Irving Berlin, and this lovely waltz was mentioned. So off to to KZbin, and find this painfully beautiful music. music seldom drives me to tears, but this did. So beautiful and bitter-sweet - I am waltzing around in the kitchen dreaming of better things, and the music being so bitter-sweet, I realise those better things will never come. But still I waltz.. Love to the artists on the clip and THANK YOU!!!!
@WellTempered112 жыл бұрын
Good for you to know that Joplin didn't write silly ragtime, he wrote masterful ragtime. And although this is an ensemble arrangement, it is Joplin's own composition. Several performances of the original score are available on KZbin, if you haven't listened to them already.

I think this may be th emost beautiful piece of music ever written. It has a kind of allure that puts it on a par with famous tunes like the Mozart Ave Verum Corpus of Gluck's Dance of th eBlessed Spirits. I am so proud that Joplin was an American

I love the Echo and Response in the intro (I play Blues so I take notice of good Echo and Response). I find it interesting that this is one of only 6 waltzes composed by Scott Joplin out of his 50 compositions. His waltzes are a real journey to listen to. This one was composed in 1905 which was the era in which guys like Charlie Patton ushered in the birth of Blues music. Ragtime and Blues have some obvious ties of influence in both style and evolution.

It is a tribute to the skilful playing and the use of a violin (always a very emotional instrument) as well as a piano for the melody that the section from 3:40 was almost painful to listen to - not because of a lack of skill (!) but because it is so very poignant and heatbreaking to hear the utter dejection and hopelessness that Joplin must have been feeling after the death of his wife only 10 weeks after their wedding. Bravo!

I find it amazing how whenever people say a song is good, that's their opinion, but whenever somebody says a song isn't absolutely perfect, all of a sudden they're elitists forcing their opinion on everybody else. At least he had a good point. Constructive criticism is the only way things improve, simply saying good things is useless. That said, I think the song was great- I also thought it was a bit fast, but the violin was just great.

Scott Joplin wrote this really sad waltz to commemorate the recent death of his new wife, Freddie (née Freddie Alexander) who called herself Bethena. She died in September 1904, aged 20, and Joplin had the waltz published in early 1905. Joplin died from the long-term effects of syphilis, 12 years later, 1st April 2017.

they say - if you cant say anything nice - dont say anything at all - but then you will always have a couch critic who feels compelled to set us plebs straight and show that this is in fact not beautiful because its not perfect according to the world of vranuse - perhaps vranuse you could audio or video a preview of your perfection for us to see and critic! - I for one do not care if its 90 120 - 130 - its BEAUTIFUL and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

For anyone who needs encouragement: Romans 8:18 “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that is coming!” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Whatever is going on right now, have faith, your situation will get better. :) Jesus bless anyone reading this and happy new year!!🥰✨💖

Is the guy playing piano blind?
@Sashabooboo8 жыл бұрын
That is so poignant to me. He's blind and can't see her and in 1906, he was essentially blind because he wasn't allowed....could not...look at her. I think this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen or heard. I've played this song....5,000 times over the past 40 years. I learned it as a 10 year old black kids growing up in what was essentially a segregated area. Not by law, but by custom and finance. So to see them playing together is just a gift to me and is inspirational.
@laslord8 жыл бұрын
My guess is yes, based on how his head doesn't move much. He plays the song very well, good job!
@16Lizards7 жыл бұрын
It did seem that he was blind and by his facial expressions, too. Your analogy is as inspirational as the program! I love his music and this is one of my favorites, along with Solace, Harmony Club Waltz and many others.

Bethena is one of the hardest song to play, bar none. To be honest, I've heard this song play poorly more than I've ever heard it played well. Joplin wrote the perfect song. Either you 'get' Bethena, or you don't. There is no in-between. What makes Bethena so hard to do correctly is that apart from getting the syncopation right, there is a cadence that the song has written inherently into it. You can easily get one right, and the other one wrong, without even being aware you've failed. If you assume that syncopation and cadence are synonymous, you've already failed. How hard can one song be to play? Go listen to Richard Zimmerman play Bethena, then you'll know. Zimmerman 'gets' Bethena. It's not just the song, it's the nuance. Nuance, soul, call it what you like. The difference is so subtle, it's hard to detect. But once you see it, it's inescapable. It is the very soul of striving to succeed. Strive on.
