This band has always worked well together. Great feel for each other without losing the grip on the soul of the song. Steve Perry - The Voice, Neal Schon - the real driving force of the music and his solo work is great compliment to Steve's vocals, Ross Valory - steady anchor, yet carries the music through the changes without being obtrusive, Jonathan Cain - great writer with perfect keyboard over/under lays. Steve Smith - one of the finest drummers in the business with a good dose of jazz. All members have satisfying backing vocals to Stev's excellent voicing. Always one of my wife's and my favorite bands. Faithfully is our wedding song.

You HAVE to do "Mother, Father" from this same concert. He hits some crazy high notes in it. It's their best live performance ever. Oh! And this is considered the classic line up: Neal Schon (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Ross Valory (Bass, Backing Vocals), Steve Perry (Lead Vocals), Steve Smith (Drums, Percussion), Jonathan Cain (Keyboards, Backing Vocals), but was like their fifth line up. Their original line up was: Neal Schon (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Gregg Rolie (Lead Vocals, Keyboards), Ross Valory (Bass, Backing Vocals), George Tickner (Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Prairie Prince (Drums, Percussion).

Agree with "Mother Father" from this 1981 Houston concert! Steve Perry has often said its the single hardest Journey song to sing, yet he sounds so much better on it live than he did in the studio recording! Its honestly a shame that more people haven't reacted to it. That ending alone is so far superior to what 95% of the singers out there could manage.

Steve has been known to sing from the heart. He sings with emotion. Also, the first time he quit was when his mother died and touring for almost 10 years straight burnt him out. I’m case someone hasn’t already said, Schon and Rolie didn’t want Steve Perry in the band. They wanted a screamer, like Robert Plant, and the singer Perry ended up replacing Robert Fleischman. The band’s manager Herbie Herbert forced them to take Perry because they needed to get on the radio with their fourth album (first with Perry) or they would be dropped. The first song Schon and Perry wrote together, Patiently, came together in 15 minutes, and from then on everyone saw the light, that this was the new Journey. To be clear, they recognized the talent, Perry just didn’t fit their vision of Journey, until they wrote together.

I'm not sure that Neal is underrated as a guitar player, but I do think the chemistry and harmony between Steve and Neal ( voice and guitar) made them great, not Steve's voice alone. That's why Steve had limited success on his own. It was an amazing, amazing musical combination. Add in their masterful song writing with John Cain, and you have icons.

You can thank the late Herbie Herbert who found the Alien Project tape that got left behind & after he heard it he told Neal Schon (formerly of Santana) that if he wanted to play large arenas again, this would be their best vocalist choice who can not only sing, but belt tunes all the way out to the cheap seats. This is by far my favorite band from the late 70 to mid 80. Damn they where so good Beth. Thank you for bringing back the memories. Being an old Veteran Vet. I have heard many great bands. Now I find myself listening to a lot of covers of the older songs done by teenage artists. I am also discovering that many of the younger listeners love the older songs. I am liking a lot of what Lucy Thomas is putting out. Her last song she dropped ‘Evergreen’. A love ballad from the movie’A Star Is Born’ written an performed by Barbra Streisand. Lucy just made a masterpiece of this song, so perfect in every way.

Steve Perry is one of the all time greats, right up there with Freddie and Dio. Btw, this was their classic and best known lineup, but not the original. Guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valroy, from this lineup, were founding members, but the original lineup was rounded out by vocalist and keyboardist Greg Rollie, rhythm guitarist George Tickner and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. Perry was brought in on their fourth album, Infinity, when they decided that they wanted a stronger lead vocalist.

I saw him interviewed and as he told his life story you seemed to relate to everything he talked about . When a person gets so tired and burnt out the pain is too much for you. You mentally can't carry on. He met the woman he loved the most in his life, I believe was in remission from breast cancer. Seemed to be love at first site for both. She started his love for music again. She died after they were together 2 years.
