I recommend listening to Psalm 135 in the Orthodox version, titled Slavite Gospoda (Praise the Lord). Check the comments to see how people from various religions-and even those who are not religious-describe it as the most beautiful song they've ever heard. The video has 8.5M views.
Lovely Russian (older style) and Aramaic rendition of an Orthodox communion hymn. If you attend Greek, Antiochian or Russian (newer style) or any of the other Orthodox churches you'll hear different beautiful versions of this hymn.

Orthodox churches insist on the use of the voice above all instruments. This is why. You will never have a created instrument more emotive and expressive than the human voice. As such, the Divine Liturgy is uniquely beautiful and moving. It sticks with you after you leave the church, and you find yourself yearning for it later in the week. Appreciate the reaction and the description of each element. Very illuminating - which is fitting. God bless.

Spent a lot of years listening to ambient, noise, and drone--so this is my neighbourhood. I love the way each voice has slight differences and letting it flow over you, you hear slight beats from in the sound. It was Eno's "Discreet Music" that changed the way I listened to music and led me into wild and woolly spaces in experimental sound. All of which meant that when we moved onto a farm, most music stayed on the shelf, and instead I found myself listening to the ambient world as if it was music. Lovely times, that.

It's interesting that you find this music generally channelling, not to one thing specifically. With God's Help, this music is a reflection very specifically of the relationship between the faithful person and God, this constant. It is quite wonderful. And this particular hymn is at the part of the Liturgy when we are given one of Christ's greatest gifts, His Own Body and Blood. Only with great reverence and repentance may we, the unworthy, approach this great Mystery to partake of it. All that is reflected here.

Senior Orthodox priest would improvise - add a verse of according to specific occasion, or something important top quote, mostly from holy scriptures. In Orthodox theology studies (is like any other Uni, and student's down wear black), there is a special subject of singing. Not everyone is talented, have voice or talent to sing, but unlike western Catholicism, singing very important in Orthodoxy, as music is to all people on earth, rather than sharp silence of obedience. The effect of song is much stronger than words,. as if you remember some song and can't stop replaying it in your mind. And eventually u get the meaning, and want to hear it again during live performance.. Orthodoxy may seem strange in today's westernized world, but is actually an epitome of a faith connected to people. From a child to old people, everyone loves to hear a song with words of compassion or strength, as singing is a gift not many animals have, aside humans. And btw, Orthodoxy is not just religion, it is a way of life. I consider myself Orthodox, follow the tradition, see churches men as just another humans and churches as buildings. But my core is Orthodox, what it feels to be, regardless wither i believe in a magic jew, ultimate boss above you, saviour of meek sheep, or go regularly to church. When I feel, i go in church, when i don't i just pass by. Went to a mosque once just to check it out.

For all those who claim this is a Georgian song I ask - will you please translate what "Тело Христово примите" means at Georgian? Maybe some of the singers are Georgian but the song, melody and singing technic in case of this song is Serbian as the song itself. "Тело Христово примите" at modern Serbian (not church Slavonic, or Russian, or Greek) means "Accept the body of Christ". Of course it is a "sin" to mention that something so beautiful comes from Serbian people other ways if some other people is in question the title of the song would be corrected or at least clarified immediately. I doubt that Beth had made intentional mistake here as she probably do not know neither Serbian or Georgian language but it is truly irritating when some commentators here claim that this is Georgian song because it is not. For me as a Serb it would be pathetic to claim that something is Serbian which is not but obviously many other people, different that Serbian, do not raise their children as Serbs do. Here is the original song by Serbian composer Miodrag Govedarica kzbin.info/www/bejne/m160iZSBntZmarM and here kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIbRfml_hJmspNE
