For someone like me who sings in a professional Orthodox choir (Russian Orthodox) it makes me really proud and happy to read these comments. Many people tend to forget or not fully acknowledge how much hard work and patience goes into singing Orthodox chants - especially the ancient ones. Spent a lot of years listening to ambient, noise, and drone--so this is my neighbourhood. I love the way each voice has slight differences and letting it flow over you, you hear slight beats from in the sound. It was Eno's "Discreet Music" that changed the way I listened to music and led me into wild and woolly spaces in experimental sound. All of which meant that when we moved onto a farm, most music stayed on the shelf, and instead I found myself listening to the ambient world as if it was music. Lovely times, that.

For all who says it's Serbian or Georgian: please see the video's description for a link to the original video. Here's more background: This is a performance of hierodeacon Theophilus (Feofil; Andrey Bogolyubov in the world) - a Russian monk and a choir leader - and his choir _Anastasis_ in St.Petersburg, Russia, during the 2018 Easter season. Note in the original video the distinct Russian accent with which Fr.Theophilus and the public pronounce "Христос воскрес!/Воистину воскрес! " (Christ is risen!/Truly risen!) Schiarchimandrite Seraphim (Bit-Kharibi; Bitbunov) - an Assyrian-Georgian Orthodox monk - makes a guest appearance doing what's he's famous for - reading a psalm and singing in Aramaic. The singing is performed in the Eastern Orthodox monastic tradition shared among Eastern Orthodox monks, not just in Georgia. The phrase "Тело Христово примите (приимите)" (Receive the Body of Christ)" sounds pretty much identical in Russian, Serbian, _and_ Church Slavonic, so here it is in Church Slavonic, maybe with some Russian accent.

Serafim is one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. I would love to see you react to his psalm singing for the Pope

I first read the title as "Hauntingly beautiful vocal coach reacts..."

Me too. I was like "damn, that's bold of her!" Then I reread it and saw the '!' In there. I mean, I agree with the other one as well, but it would be weird if she said that about herself.

Haha, same. "Weird flex, but OK."

My brain saw " beautifull '' and I thought it must be a joke title - overstating the obvious.

In Eastern orthodoxy the use of instruments is not allowed, all the praising is done by people as they are simply enough

Re: connections between gestures and sounds. Some of the best choir directors I've had used their hands to really paint sound pictures for us singers, not just while conducting, but during rehearsals while trying to explain what kind of sound they wanted. It was so effective. Also, love the reaction to choral music. Keep em coming!

There is a video out there of Georgian priest and choir singing the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic to Pope Francis, and he was so taken by the performance that he bowed his head in prayer. The acoustics of the church made the whole thing even more powerful. You should definitely give that one a listen.
