The "cry in the voice' - in Spanish, "la voz llorada" is exemplified in the Mexican songs she grew up with from childhood. She started early! That Voice is more than the gift she undeniably posesses - she nurtured it; practiced, worked, trained for decades to achieve greatness. ❤❤❤

This is the most beautiful voice on the planet. Linda Ronstadt is an American treasure. She definitely had a natural gift but she also worked very hard at creating the very best sound she could make. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this incredible talent. I could listen to her voice endlessly. Her live performance of “Down So Low” will leave you speechless. Great choice and lovely reaction! More of Linda please. 🌺✌️

I was driving from Cincinnati to Cleveland years ago late at night. A caller requested this song. Her brother who had had a rough life in and out of trouble and fought drug addiction had just died of an overdose. Whenever I hear this song it reminds of the pain in her voice and the words of the song just fit her story so perfectly.

Go listen to The Warning's Paulina Villarreal Velez sing *23,* Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX on 08/29/2022. See if you don't hear bits of Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt in her voice. Pau is a drummer, and she's a bilingual Mexican singer-songwriter-composer. After *23,* listen to *Revenant* from the same show, and then find her solo rendition of RadioHead's *Creep,* filmed in black-and-white on an out-of-tune piano with an iPhone. It's raw, real, and gut-wrenchingly emotional.

Linda's genius was her ability to find the emotions behind the lyrics, and immerse herself in them so deeply that they came out naturally in her voice. She lived her songs.

When The Eagels sing this song it feels like we are listening to the titular Desperado lamenting his life and becoming resigned to his choices. When Linda sings it, it feels like we are listening to a woman who is desperately in love with the Desperado and is trying to show him that it's not too late to change. Imagine a strong beautiful woman (which Linda certainly is!) sitting you down and giving you a piece of her mind, including the occasional sob or outburst. Both versions are incredibly powerful, and the slight difference in perspective has an outsized effect on the overall feeling of the song.

I first heard Linda Ronstadt in 1970, she had already recorded "Different Drum" with The Stone Pony's, and just recorded "Long Long Time" (one of my favorites, if that is at all possible). The first thought that ran trough my head was just how good she was, and then thinking "this girl is going to be a huge star" (my one and only prediction that came true). She was only mildly known at the time. As time passed I continued to listen to her music and fell in love with her. I guess like most guy's at the time, if they knew who Linda was, they were in love with her. I know there is some Willie Nelson quote regarding this, but that came later. In November of 1976, I finally got the chance to see her in concert, at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. I remember hearing that she was going to perform there and asked my friends if they would like to go. I got laughed at, as they commented ... "are you kidding Linda Ronstadt, fu*k no"; these guys were all hard rockers. Well my response was for all of them to go fu*k themselves, and I went to the concert alone. By the way, the best concert I've ever been to, no flash pyrotechnics, no rhythmic dancing, no over-the-top drama, just a great band with the best singer I have ever heard, making beautiful music. Just a joy to my ears! Sadly, I have never had a chance to see her a second time, but her voice has been an integral part of my life, and will continue to be. So you see, if I come across a little or alot biased, well, it's because I am! I know that many DON'T share this opinion, there are also many that DO ... but I believe that she is the GREATEST SINGER. I can't say of all time because, all time has not passed, but too me, she is! I will continue to joyfully listen to her music, and hope that she recovers, (perhaps a new cure will emerge). On a sad and happy note, the fact that she's afflicted with such a condition just breaks my heart, but we can all be so grateful that she has left us such large and eclectic catalog of music. We are all winners to benefit from her immense talent! Linda ... you are the GREATEST !

Ronstadt grew up with music but had no formal training until later in her life when she turned her talent to light opera. She was always a disciplined artist with a versatile and powerful instrument. Even when she was making hits, I don’t think people really understood how skillful a singer she was. She was so natural, you could relate to the emotion and take the gorgeous tone for granted.

Linda's liberal politics, Mexican roots, and counter-culture friends probably didn't sit well with the Nashville establishment. She was a free spirit, more in tune with the L.A. scene, socially, than with image conscious Nashville in the '70s and '80s. Their loss… But in the end, she didn't need them. She made her mark across many genres.

I am 65 years old and therefore had the privilege to grow up in the greatest era of modern rock and roll music ever (1967 - 1975 and yes I do LOVE Janis as well !). I became a fan of Linda when I was about 12 or 13. I think she is just one of those generational talents that comes along every 50 or 100 years.... I don't think she had much formal training in her younger years but did get some before turning to Broadway. She was just a tremendous natural talent that should be applauded and appreciated for all time. Listening to her can still bring me to tears and/or chills at any time. As kind of a music nerd, the only woman in recent times that comes close (but is not quite on the same level) to me is Grace Potter who I also love. I remember as a child listening to Linda on the country stations. Then she showed she could sing any genre but the country stations still played her. I believe, to this day, country music got more diversified due to Linda. Best voice hands down. When a voice can move you to tears, it’s pretty special. Damn you Parkinson’s! You robbed all of us, but especially her.

Beth - you did such a great job of showing some of the different aspects of Linda's multi-faceted career. She was the queen of pop music in the 70s... but she did so many other great things later in her career. Thanks for pointing that out.

I was one of the millions who had Linda's poster on their bedroom wall. I memorized nearly every record she made. I absolutely love your knowledge and respect for this dear, precious lady. I am so grateful for having grown up when I did, with some of the best musicians.... and Linda among them. What a great review!

Wow, I’ve seen very many reaction videos but this is the best by far😮😊 I clicked on it because of Linda, but I’m super impressed with this entire product. I love the perfect blend of technical explanations and emotional reaction. The pacing is perfect and the extra info bubbles are great too… fantastic work!👍

For what it's worth (not much, I suppose), the favorite country and western dance hall in Knoxville, TN, in the '80s and early '90s was called Desperado's. Every night at closing time, they'd play this song -- sometimes the Eagles version, sometimes Linda's version. So it adds another layer of nostalgia to this song for me. I never tire of hearing it.

It’s almost as though Linda subconsciously knew she would not be able to sing until the end of her life, so she explored all forms of music she grew up with and loved, and she mastered them all. I sincerely love her. My favorite singer ❤

When the Eagles first released it, it didn't sound anywhere like their later release. Linda did a cover and it sounded so different and a lot more better sounding and appealing which is what you are hearing now. The Eagles re-released it just like Linda's version and the rest is history.

Beth, I loved your analysis of this song. Your technical analysis of Linda's singing style was really insightful for someone like me who has no vocal training. However, what you also said that is so revelatory is the fact that Linda puts her heart into these renditions. She once said that she has experienced so many different things in life and can always relate a song to some life experience. I don't think Linda had any formal singing lessons to speak of, but left home at 16 for Los Angeles, and was essentially self-taught. Thank you again for your video, it made my day.
