What you described as Maynard and APC's process for writing songs is EXACTLY how Maynard writes his parts for TOOL - he waits for them to finish the music completely then he writes his melodies and lyrics - Cant speak to his process for Perfect Circle - But I would assume it is similar if not the same - not uncommon - the only difference being Maynard has commented he used to try to work out his parts with early versions of the songs Within TOOL , only to find they had they had rearranged, or changed parts forcing him to scrap what he had done - So now he waits until the music is DONE DONE - before he writes his parts.
@GeekFurious Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think she flipped the information. TOOL writes the music first, THEN Maynard comes in. I don't think that's how it's done in any of his other bands.
@JP47471 Жыл бұрын
@@GeekFurious in Puscifer he said they all make the music together.
@tugmeboat Жыл бұрын
Yep, they don't get along well when writing music in Tool, they move slow and Maynard moves fast. They found what works is to compose separately. Songwriting and composure fascinates me in the first place, but for Tool's music to have been developed separately, with no notion of what vocals might accompany is just mind-blowing to me.
@DeathPenny Жыл бұрын
@@tugmeboat in most of the bands I played in we would sometimes bring in complete songs to the band but most of the time we would start with a riff or idea and as a band build the instrumentation and our singer would come in when we were at the 90 percent complete and start putting vocal ideas into the mix and help with the final arrangements until songs were done done - Maynard is a legend man - he doesn’t want to hear shit from the other guys in TOOL until musically the song is 100 percent complete - he doesn’t want to alter arrangements he wants to work within the confines of the music they created and then Add his magic on top - I think it’s amazing and definitely a very special attribute that makes their music as special and uniquely TOOL - that it is. I think we really started to see that after Aenima with the release of Lateralus. Gotta love em

Love this song! Orestes is another great one that has a completely different sound, but thematically is like a sequel to Judith (it also is the very next song on the album). Orestes hits me in the feels every time I hear it. The line "and from pulling you down with me here, I can almost hear you scream 'Give me one more medicated, peaceful moment'" absolutely wrecks me. Maynard's passion, pain and emotion pours through in that moment.

Mer De Noms is still one of my favourite albums 23 years later, not a bad track on it. This song is about his mother being in a car crash that left her disabled but not giving up on her faith, hence all the angst. It's kinda a prequal to Tool's Wings For Marie and 10,000 days, which are about her passing and how he understands her faith better now.

Such a great song. I love the groove. Making it distinctly 3 and not 6 gives it such an insistence that works perfectly with Maynard's voice. I also loved how Paz, the bassist, kind of showed off by putting her hair up in the middle of the song and finishing it just in time to come in on the beat.

Excellent live show, only seen these guys twice but really fantastic. One tour Maynard was sporting the long black hair and performing from under the drum set in some sort of cage so pretty much obscured from view, but it was an outside venue and started raining like mad, like torrential, and he came out from the cage and stood at the edge of the stage all out there for everyone to see and asked, 'would you like us to stop playing" or some such. Needless to say the audience went nuts, fun little concert moment burned into the brain. They kept playing.

The fact that I remember loving the song, know it by heart, but it's like I hear the lyrics for the first time... I'm Finnish and we start studying English when we're 10, and I apparently understood about 5 words of what he sang... There are entire pop songs I know by heart but had no idea what they were saying. I remember seeing a right-wing pastor on YT review this song at one point (watched it out of curiosity). What was interesting to me was that while he took issue with the *message* of the song and Maynard basically calling out his mother for believing in a god that made her to suffer throughout her life, the pastor couldn't deny the overwhleming talent that went into making it and how good the song is. And that to me was a sign of just how talented Maynard and his bandmates (across all 3 of his bands) are. On a related note, if you haven't listened to them yet, I definitely recommend Tool's songs "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)", "10,000 Days (Wings for Marie Pt 2), and Puscifer's song "Horizons". All 3 of those were songs written by Maynard while he was still processing his grief from the death of his mother.

This song really needs to be paired with it's sister songs, Tool's "Wings for Marie' and '10,000 Days', which are very directly tied together in the fact that they're all referring to his relationship with his mother (Judith Marie Keenan), who was paralyzed from a cerbral hemorrhage when he was a kid. Judith is his... response to her faith despite what had happened to her... and the other two songs are about process her death when she passed in 2003.

One other interesting thing and anyone else please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know anything about Puscifer live but everytime he played with Tool live he was always in the background never really being the "frontman" more of a shadow because he wanted the music to speak for itself or something to that affect and for APC he would do the normal and be the "frontman" for those shows. At least every time I saw both those two bands live, those were my experiences. Great review though as usual.
