Brian Wilson was actually embarrassed by his falsetto voice. It was wonderful to hear him sing. Perfect harmony with his two brothers Carl and Denis. One of the pure genius singer, writer, producers ever. Another great one to listen to is “I Can Hear Music” or “God Only Knows”. It was interesting how the Beatles and Brian Wilson pushed each other in those early years. Pet Sounds was inspired by Brian’s admiration for Rubber Soul which then pushed the Beatles to make Sergeant Pepper. Paul’s daughter said family friends told her that her dad would play, “God Only Knows” over and over saying he wished he had written a love song that good, which is high praise from the guy who co-wrote Yesterday and Michelle.

R M - Paul McCartney wrote "Here, There and Everywhere" in response to Brian's "God Only Knows"... and it (like "God Only Knows") is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Paul has said that "God Only Knows" is the best love song ever made. And Brian told Paul that "Here, There and Everywhere" is his favorite love song. These two amazing singer/song writers, who were born just two days apart, have a great love/respect/appreciation for each other.

I remember hearing the older teenagers after the concert say "Did you hear that high voice guy (Brian)? He was amazing!" Their vocals were excellent without monitors or mic'd instruments using the house soundsystem. When they toured Pet Sounds, they were among the first, if not THE first to use a mic'd system and bring strings along in those early days. There are lots of a capella tracks and even some of Brian adding a couple of bars of harmony around that are well worth the time!

A fun thing to do to any early Beach Boy song, and to realize how great their harmonies work, if you have a good stereo system that truly has a "left/right fader," try turning only to the right or only the left channel on, and listen how awful it sounds in single voice, and then adjust back to the middle mix to see how truly GREAT they sound. And, since most of them were related, you also have that family harmony in there to! What a great band, and a great song!! Next time, Beth, try "Good Vibrations." MASSIVE harmony on a more complex level in that one, for sure!!
@TonyM1322 жыл бұрын
Early Beach Boys songs were not in stereo. All of their albums through 1967 and singles through 1968 were in mono (or "Duophonic" fake stereo which was basically just a slight time delay between left and right to create an echo effect). In recent years much of the material has been remastered into true stereo mixes from the original multi-track tapes, but unless you seek that out, by far the majority of 1961-67 Beach Boys music on any physical format today was mixed in mono - same voices (and instruments) in both left and right.

Moving harmonies always. While I’m taken with great vocal harmonies, it’s the blending and timbre of the voices that always made this group so outstanding. Harmonies created by people with shared DNA are almost always “next level”. Brian, Carl and Dennis were brothers and I believe Mike Love is a cousin. Think of some of the greatest harmony groups such as Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, the Osmonds, the Ames Brothers, the Mills Bothers, the Andrews Sisters, the Everly Brothers and so on. Voice blending like that make it very difficult to pick out parts.

Also check out the Four Freshmen (the inspiration Brian Wilson claims sent him on the quest to have full vocal group harmonies) or the Hi Los. These groups were much like jazz and pop music versions of the Beach Boys. They had spectacular sense of pitch, had challenging voice parts with inner voices moving like we hear with "Don't Worry Baby" and with the jazz groups we hear 7th chord and even 9th or 11th chords. Vocal music is great fun.
