Perhaps one of the reasons for Brian's seeming melancholy is that, with the exception of the bridge which was always his part, he is now singing Carl's part on "Surfer Girl." He knows he can no longer hit the high notes, and he knows Carl's part is where he is now needed.

July 2 2003. I was 11 years old. My family had friends over, people were swimming in the pool. My mom brought out a little boom box and started playing music. It was a Beach Boys greatest hits CD. I heard it from inside the house and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I grabbed a different CD, went outside, switched the CDs and took The Beach Boys one inside for myself. I sat in front of a stereo listening to it for hours. Life was never the same. Man, this music is something else. Never gets old.

As an avid surfer I always loved this song. I had a ‘woody’ that was a 57 Chevy wagon with windows all around. I got my mom to make curtains for all the windows. I had a bed in the back. I took that wagon surfing all the time. I’d get out of college classes at 1030 in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’d leave school with my surfboard and drive to Galveston and stay until dark. I used to go to Galveston 3-5 times a week. I also used to go to other surfing spots in Texas, like Freeport, Corpus Christi and Port Isabel. The surfing at Port Isabel was always good the waves were 4-6 feet and powerful. The only thing missing was a steady surfer girl. I still remember surfing one day. It was a hot summer day. I started surfing when the sun came up. About noon I went to a popular 7-11 at 37th street. It was next to the Galveston seawall. I used to go to that store to get drinks and snacks. As usual there was a long line. I was behind a stunning bikini clad girl. Her skin was dark from being in the sun. And because she just walked into the cold store her skin was covered with goosebumps. Those images have never left my mind. I wish I would’ve talked with her and got her number. Every time I hear the song ‘Surfer Girl’ my mind goes back to that moment I stood behind that girl.

Got it. Thanks. In any event, Brian sure doesn't look too happy to be there. Not sure why, but there is lots to speculate over. It looks and sounds like the vocals were prerecorded and they are lip synching. The voices of the actual BBs seem to be buried in the mix. They are getting on in years, and their voices are not what they once were. Perhaps that disturbs the perfectionist in Brian. Al is not holding a guitar and seems to be uncomfortable about that. Brian and Mike are right next to each other and do not even seem to acknowledge each others' existence. Not the way I prefer to remember the BBs.

Thank the Good Lord...🙏🙏🙏 I grew up listening to absolutely phenomenal music like This in the 60s and 70s...! Because my kids have absolutely nothing of value when it comes to music that they can hold close to their heart that actually has meaning and a story behind it........! Prof. Jeff Galey🎓

I’m 71 years old and that song is in the top three favorite songs in my whole life. I saw them in person in 1969. I am a personal friend of a guy who played with The Beach Boys for a year and six months. He created an opportunity for my wife and I to meet Bruce Johnson and Mike Love on their 50th Tour (All Summer Long). The Beach Boys album “Pet Sounds” (Brian Wilson’s greatest compilation of music is my favorite album of all time.) They have stood the test of time.

That moment that starts from 1:45 (I will make...) to the end of the song is absolute harmonizing perfection and will never be repeated. No wonder Brian had to wipe a tear away. Amazing.
