Great reaction. He had a great voice. But he's under appreciated in his contributions to the area of arranging, phrasing and timing. He pretty much changed the way singers performed.
@ModernBingFan
@ModernBingFan 4 жыл бұрын
glen kelley that was more Bing Crosby, as he more changed the way of singing compared Sinatra, Sinatra just built onto Bing’s style. Frank was told to copy or at least to look at Crosby’s phrasing and timing.

If anything his phrasing is the most praised, there are people who actually think his voice was bad.

Bing Crosby was the voice that carried more influence but Sinatra took crooning to another level with his "swing" phrasing, breath control, and lyric delivery. He also had a cocky, mobster persona which comes across in this video.

The band backing him up that night is the great Count Basie Orchestra, and the man in this clip conducting the orchestra is a legend himself: Quincy Jones.

In 1998, I was in a college Jazz band as a trumpet player (which was fun enough on its own, of course), and I was lucky enough to be selected to sing the vocals for this song. I'm not a vocalist by any means, but I received some excellent coaching from someone very much like Miss Roars. That made all the difference.

Im a major metalhead and have been for 30 years. When I discuss my favorite bands, guitarists, singers and such, it is funny to see peoples expressions when I name names like Dio, Halford, Sebastian Bach and other singers and then mention that Sinatra is my favorite singer. It gets a great response....

Same here! I'm primarily a rock/metal fan, however, I love people's faces when I tell them that I like to listen to classical music (thanks mostly to Andre Rieu), but also singers like Sinatra, Elvis (thanks to my mom who loves him), Andy Williams or Dean Martin. On the other hand, I'm 27 and it's quite sad that most people my age do not even know who any of these people are, maybe with the exception of Elvis, who's hard to miss in the modern popculture.

True, the joy and excitement of the performance is there. But actually Sinatra excelled from other crooners by using his voice and words as another instrument. What set him apart was his timing. Watch any of his serious performances. Unlike others even those with great voices, Sinatra is constantly aware of the orchestra and the music in terms of his place and involvement.

A very nice, honest review Ms Roars on one of the best popular singers of all time. Sinatra didn't need to show off like many singers do today trying to outdo each other with their loud high notes and other nonsense. Frank new he was good and so did his musical peers. If you are truly great at something you don't need to convince others that you are. I appreciate people like you who are both knowledgeable and fair with the great talents of yesterday.

I saw Frank years ago, maybe early 80's, in a massive arenas as we were up almost in the rafters. Frank came out and took the place over, I've been in the music industry a good deal of my life and never ever have been so captivated by one man ... His presence, charisma and even at his advanced years, strength and quality of voice was astounding ...it was a highlight of my life, absolutely blessed to see him..

A master communicator. In order to be one you have to also be a master of relaxation (which takes a world of confidence), the ability to interpret and personalize a lyric, and then make it personal to the audience. In those days diction and word clarity was paramount. But as I've said before on other sites, Frank was always the coolest guy in the room. Nat King Cole had these very same abilities as well (with a prettier timber in my opinion,) but Nat's personality was avuncular. Nevertheless, it always felt as if each were singing directly to you. This performance has to be with Count Basie and his orchestra. A time long and forever gone.

Sinatra regards "Only The Lonely" on Capitol, (1958) (and I heartily concur) as his greatest album. You, your viewers, anyone who appreciates jazz, blues, and ballads need to hear that album, especially "One For My Baby" and "Blues In The Night." Do a serious critique on that material. Heartbreaking. There'll never be another.

Loved your reaction. I know this is about Frank, but you did mention the band as well. Not sure if you are aware, but the band is the great Count Basie orchestra. In my opinion, Sinatra's best recordings/performances were with Count Basie. You see, I knew Count Basie; in the 70s we lived next door to him and my parents were on the committee of Count Basie's, Wife's charity The Committee of 50. Anyway, I side track. There was a close similarity with the way that Sinatra phrased the song and the way Basie phrased the music; it was like they were made for each other.
