When a singer makes you feel like they’ve lived through what they are singing about, that’s perfection. What a great individual voice, I love this song even though it’s very different to what I would normally listen to!

There's a recent interview from 2019 where they talk about them a bit. Tons of work to do those backing vocals. "[Frank] Filipetti says while the vocal sessions were difficult, the results were worth it. Explaining the arduous vocal stacking process, Filipetti says Eric and Rory would sing a vocal line for the chorus, perhaps a harmony part. Then they would double them doing the same line again. “Then they would sing the next step in the harmonic sequence and they would probably do the tonic note first, then the third, then the fifth and we’d double each of those. Then we’d probably add an octave over the original and that would vary somewhat, but that was the basic idea,” Filipetti recalls, reminding that there was no Autotune back in those days. “Then we would go back and do the same thing again, but this time Eric and Rory would sing in harmony instead of in unison, and then when we did the double, they would switch the parts, so if Rory was on the top and Eric was on the bottom on the first pass, Rory would be on the bottom and Eric would be on the top on the second pass and we’d do the whole thing that way.” “It was 2:00am when we finished a 10-hour session doing the backgrounds,” recalls Dodd. “I thought we were done when Jim piped in, ‘Hey Icy, you want to sing the duet parts now?’ ‘I wanna go home Jim,’ but I acquiesced.”"

I really appreciate the research you do for the artists that you cover and the vocal histories you dive into, as I'm really fascinated by what made artists sound the way they do - especially those with distinct tones and techniques. Thank you! I wish my vocals had the power of Bonnie's, as it's her delivery that elevates this song into the epic power ballad that it is, imo. But unfortunately the only thing my vocals have in common with Bonnie Tyler is that every now and then it falls apart.

I absolutely loved that moment where you just looked right at the camera and said, "She's extraordinary isn't she", because I very definitely felt the same way watching this, I mean I've always believed this but I feel this video really emphasized it in a way that I haven't really felt before, and a great deal of that is due to your evaluation of her voice. Sometimes we just believe many of these singers to be fantastic, sometimes we know why, sometimes it's just a feeling, but in either case when someone knowledgeable can come along and either give form to that feeling of awe that we have with these singers or perhaps point out even finer nuances than the ones we had previously spotted it either gives us a perspective or a deeper appreciation than what we had before. P.S. In case you can't tell, I really love your channel and your evaluations. lol. Thank you!

So many singers have tried to cover this song but they do not have Bonnie's growl . The hair was epic ! If you don't watch it or listened it,you MUST! By the way, I think this song used to be sung with Meat Loaf at duet,if I'm not wrong. Nothing more, a big hug from Spain and care yourself! 😺

I would like to mention as a huge Bonnie Tyler fan, that isn’t a live performance. In those days it was pretty common to lip sync over the studio versions of songs in order to use the best audio quality for television. She did sound different live than in the studio even back then. But she still sounds amazing! It’s just the grandness and technicalities of the song that makes it so incredibly hard to sustain at her studio level in a live setting. However, no auto tune in those days! So the studio one is still 100% her.

Found this a fascinating insight into Bonnie's vocals, I've been a fan of hers ever since I heard this song. It's been a long time since I've watched any videos of this song so it was a delight to see Jim Steinman at the piano. I'm still devasted that Jim passed away this year. I especially loved the musical Tanz Der Vampire where they took some of Jim's songs including this one and reworked them into the musical, to hear them orchestrated is something to behold.

There’s one live performance by Bonnie singing Total Eclipse of the Heart, that I think you’d be very impressed with. Anyone can watch here on KZbin. It’s Bonnie Tyler performs Total Eclipse of the Heart live on The Grammy’s. This was the year she was nominated for best female pop performance. Unfortunately, she lost to Pat Benatar’s recording of “We Are Young”. Bonnie once described that Grammy performance the most nervous she ever was…so much so, her mouth was so dry during the performance her lips would sometimes stick to her teeth. Isn’t that crazy!?!?! However, despite that inside info from Bonnie, you could never tell by the performance, it was SO IMPRESSIVE!

Thanks Beth. How about the 'keening' as per the likes of The Cranberries' amazing Dolores O'Riordan? And the likes of Pat Benetar who was operatically trained always has a raspy voice. I love Bonnie and Elkie Brookes - similar raspy voices.

The bass or guitar player singing turn around bright eyes is pretty talented as well

Isolated only the vocals. That is like the Gold Seal of approval from a vocal coach!

What a great song. Very cool hearing the isolation of the vocals.

Bonnie Tyler would have been an absolute movement in a hard rock or metal band.
