A famous Malaysian composer/producer the late Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan who've made many songs for Ziana and also the one who brought Siti Nurhaliza into stardom once asked by the press, 'Why does he think Ziana couldnt break it into international scenes?' He said Ziana has a very distinct, unique way of singing that western people might have trouble understand despite she was dubbed as the Malaysian Whitney Houston at that time. I dont know.. But I believe he knows what he was talking, judging from many reaction videos by outsiders about her. There's always this "hesitance vibes" to it, or question marks around them lol. A song is a story told with music. If singers really understood that, they would be much more clear in their speech. The trend has been to loose clarity for technique. Technique is great but should never replace the clarity of the words, otherwise why having words in the first place? These days no one have a clue what singers are saying. The words got mashed with the music and, true enough, it sells. But the top singers are absolutely crystal clear. They convey that story or that poem and they do so with a beautiful voice and great technique. One of the reasons singers have no idea what they are singing is because often the lyrics are someone else's. They should spend some time studying the meaning of the lyrics not just singing them.
