It is funny that the director of the Olympia Theater at the time thought that one song by Umm Kulthum would last for 5 minutes at most, and when he asked her how many songs she would sing, she replied that she would sing two songs in each concert. He was shocked by her response, but he realized that one song would last for an hour and a half, and Paris continued to enjoy Umm Kulthum for five full hours.

They wouldn't be able to play with the said sheets, she has her own rhythm that goes with the rhythm of the public and her own desires, when she changes the rhythm or even changes entire passages of the song by going higher or lower notes, they go with her in this enchanting trip, when the public ask her to repeat a passage of the song, they must go with the rhythm, sometimes she changes a song of 38 minutes in a song of 2 hours. There is so much improvisation and passion in it... Sheets can go with the wind. You can't simply compare her to someone else, and it's the same for the orchestra! The final result is a creation between the music creator, the lyrics creator, om kolthoum, the orchestra and the public. It's simply magic!

Especially for that song, she used to have a chair to sit on during the intro. The intro is 15 min long in the original full version of this song, composed by the great of all time artist Mohammed Abdel Wahab, it is the first work that gathered them together by the wishes of President Naser and basically everyone. They had a tiny clash where the intro was too long but the artist insisted on showing his talent as well as she shows her. This work was named "The meeting of Clouds" as two great of all time artists. Worth mentioning also that one of her old crew died around the sixties and she since then left an empty chair behind her where he used to sit as a memory of him. I advice everyone to listen to the music of that song after enjoying the strong voice of Umm Kulthum, a.k.a Egypt.

Om Kalthoum - Inta Omry (You are my Life!) Your eyes took me back to the days that used to be (have gone), They’ve taught me to regret the past and its wounds. The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! How much of my life’s time, before you, has gone and been spent. Habibi (my love), how much of my life’s time has gone, But the heart before you never saw a single joy, Nor has it tasted in the world other than the taste of wounds! I have only started to love my life now. I have also started to fear that life might run past me. My heart and mind met joy in the light of your eyes. Ye life of my heart, more precious than my life itself. Why Haven’t I met your love sooner? The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! The beautiful nights, affection and love, The heart has saved them aside for you, since a long time ago. Taste with me the love, feel its bits and pieces, From the tenderness of my heart whose yearning for your love has reached its limit. Give me your eyes, where my eyes can daydream into. Give me your hands, where mine feel at ease upon touching them. Habibi (my love), come, what has passed us is enough already! The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! Ye more precious than my days, ye more beautiful than my dreams! Take me to your love and keep me away from the world, Let’s go far away, just me and you, We shall wake up with love and sleep on affection. You made me come to peace with my life, And helped me forget my pain, and with you I forget all sadness. Your eyes took me back to the days that used to be (have gone), They’ve taught me to regret the past and its wounds. The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! - Lyrics: Ahmad Shafiq Kamil Composer: Mohammad Abdulwahhab Translation to English: MaysoonMusic

What he's talking about after the 9 minute mark 💯. Talent back then was just undeniable, no cheating with vocal enhancing technology. Speakers weren't like now. The auditoriums they sang in were built magical. That's why I can never stop listening to the classics. No matter what country or language 😊

Wow, her pitch range is amazing. One the versatile singer. In my country India, we too had a versatile, with heavenly voice playback singer. He sang as low pitch to the highest pitch. His sweetness in the voice would certainly capture souls. No matter what the situation of the scenes and song is, he dissolved himself like water. He's none other than the greatest ever lived Muhammad Rafi.

"Oh God, bring us back to the best days and nights. We grew up listening to Umm Kulthum's voice. The homes would prepare for the first Thursday night of every month when she would sing on Egyptian radio. You'd find all the Egyptians on their balconies, holding their old radios and listening with all their hearts to that voice. And it wasn’t just the Egyptians, but the entire Arab world, from the Atlantic to the Gulf, eagerly awaited her on the first Thursday of every month."

Glad to see you reviewing Um Kulthum. Some things to note: The music is as much a part of the show as the vocalist, that's why there usually would be a whole 30min of pure music before the vocalist even begins to put the audience into mood (what arabs call "tarab", its like a musical high). Arab audiences are so different from their Western counterparts. In Arabian concerts, the audience adds cues and signals that a good performer uses to emphasize on certain verses... The performer may repeat certain passages, emphasize certain notes and basically improvise to fit the "tarab"

I am Lebanese and I grew up to listening to Oum khaltoum. She was blasting from every little lane, balcony, corner shop.etc at your Nan's house at your aunty"s your uncle's at your neighbour's house. Om Kalthoum is in the thread 9f the middle Eastern world and sum... She was my first experience of the Blues ...as I grew up this led to gravitating to African American Blues BB King, Freddy king, Albert King and all those greats to me they made sense after being exposed from a little age to Oum Kalthoum Arabic Blues. Thank you for your appreciation slso of an icon of the middle East

Powerful vocals, being Arabic I grew up to my parents listening to her, back then I had little appreciation for it. I was young and Arabic music made me cry constantly. Like I did the first time I heard the Beatles "Here comes the sun"! Now I don't mind crying to music at all. I do it on the regular.
