It's that they both have (and use) their range which makes this performance definitive - to even approach it would require similar ranges. Add in Bill's rasp and Bobby's gymnastics and it's an unapproachable target.

This song is probably THE classic example of the Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” technique. In spite of his many personal failings, Specter was a genius producer. This in no way minimizes the contribution of the Righteous Brothers, but, as so many things, the whole is much greater than the parts. Thank you for reacting to one of my favorite songs.

Note that at the time of this performance (1964) Bill and Bobby were 24 years old. Their technical polish as individual vocalists, and as a duo, is even more remarkable considering their youth.

It was live, with a different orchestral arrangement, but their voices sound the same. In fact their singing was so meticulous, this live performance still syncs perfectly to the record track, even though that wasn't their intention.

The Righteous Brothers are not lip syncing. They were regulars on the great Shindig and sang this song live on the show. This video to KZbin replaced that singing with the recording which was a hit produced by Phil Spector with his "wall of sound", which couldn't be played live anyhow. I personally don't like such manipulation, which is not authentic and causes such misleading confusion.

Bobby Hatfield hitting those "Bring it on back" lines reminds me a lot of the legendary James Brown. Absolutely mind-blowing that he was able to get his voice to reach that pitch so strongly. The Righteous Brothers were a one of a kind act.

I have been singing this most of my life. As a boy I could do Boby's tenor part really well and sang that part in concert. Then I became a baritone-bass like Bill Medley. That's when I began to really appreciate what a wonderful job he does in the performances and recordings I have heard of this song. I am not as good as Bill but I have gotten applause for singing his part. I do love this piece of music. I sing with it everytime I hear it.

I'm glad you mentioned the "space" between their voices. It makes it really easy to pick out who's singing what. Most groups, the harmony can get so close that you can lose track of which singer is doing which part, and I've never found that to be the case with the Righteous Brothers. Also, I'm pretty sure every guy my age or older has tried to sing this song. But when we try, even if we can sing the notes, somehow we can't make the music.

Oh yeah, hitting the notes vs making the music. ~~ I sang "Crying" for my "recital" for a voice class at the Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago) Roy did it in D, I sang in C, I hit all the noes, I did not make the music.

Legend has it that very, very early in their career while performing at a small venue a guy in the audience walked up to them and said "Brothers, you guys are Righteous." The rest is history. This is one of their biggest hits, along with Unchained Melody, and {You're My} Soul and Inspiration. I have loved them for years and love your reactions to them.

The legend is true. Bill has said in an interview that they were performing at The Derby in Santa Ana and there were marines there from El Toro Marine Air Base. As told by Bill, there was an African American marine that yelled out, "That was righteous, brother". The rest is history.

Thank you for your critique as a coach, it is so important to understand the dynamics, and also to know that Bobby studied with a coach for 2 years to fine tune his skill, control the song, and move his jaw ever so slightly. I heard this song on the Andy Williams Show as a young teen, and there many shows of the day like Ed Sullivan, who would support amazing singers; unlike today's over marketed musicians with less talent. Check out Bill Medley's solo of IVE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE from DIRTY DANCING, compared with Bobby Hatfield's solo of UNCHAINED MELODY. Bravo to the Blue-Eyed soul of the 60's, instilled in my mind and in my life.

You bring such joy to my heart and soul when you enjoy these performances. These men and this song are classic. Such skill and talent. Don't need autotune or other studio tricks. Just great, well written music sung flawlessly. Plus these men had a ton of raw skill and talent. I have always loved this song. The beautiful harmonies of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, the delicious contrast of their highs and lows in the call and response segment. Utterly fantastic. I remember how every time we would hear this song on the radio, my mother and I would both sing along--really belting it out in a way we didn't do on other songs. I was able to cover Bill Medley's part very well, and Mum did an amazing rendition of Bobby Hatfield's part. I usually don't like to talk about my own singing as I believe I am now mediocre at best (I readily admit that I had an amazing voice as a child, having impressed quite a few music teachers and choir directors, but since puberty, meh, at least in my own opinion, though a number of people have disagreed with me), but on that specific song, when I would just let go and have fun, really letting myself get lost in the music, and with Mum accompanying me, I have to admit that we ALWAYS sounded truly great.

My voice changed when I was around 12yo and honestly it's as deep and probably deeper than Bill's. I don't mind it now (mid 40's) but try calling up a girl your age with that voice when a parent or older sibling answers calling you a pervert and to never call again.

This is such a great song that from the moment Bill Medley's voice kicks in with the opening note, this became as much a couple of guys with great voices singing to a beautiful girl as it is a vocal critique of a tremendous live rendition of a great song. And for that, thank you, Mr. Medley (my bass hero) and Mr. Hatfield (RIP). You should check out The Righteous Brothers' very bluesy rendition of "I Just Want To Make Love To You." One of my favourites by these guys. And I love that you caught the part that sounded like it came out of "Grease." I instantly thought the same thing. That is so 1950s-early 1960s. Awesome reaction, as usual.

I always thought Bill had a Low voice, and it would be hard for me to hit his low notes. Then when I tried to sing along I realized his voice is not so much super-Low as it is super-Deep, and it is harder for me to hit his high notes than the low ones. His deep voice makes even the higher notes "sound low." Dunno if that makes sense.
