Rebel Heart was originally intended to be a double album, featuring both dark and love songs. A lot of tracks were leaked, and they are quite interesting, with a more electronic vibe. She was really upset about the leaks 😅

Originally planned as a two disc album, the rebel disc with the more dance songs, and the heart for the ballads. The leak just changed everything and she had to re-arrange a lot of the tracks and leave some others out of the official release. A big shame…

In an interview, Diplo commented on Madonna's work during this era: “Her song ‘Ghosttown’ was a guaranteed number one for anyone else, but she didn’t get a fair shot. With ‘Bitch I’m Madonna,’ everyone said it wouldn’t go anywhere, but I was like, ‘Screw it, this song represents you more than anything." This quote really captures the essence of that time for her. The "you're too old for this" criticism became especially loud. But Madonna wasn't interested in being boxed in or making watered-down music just to fit into the "mature" category people wanted to place her in. She didn’t set out to create another critically acclaimed album; instead, she wanted to bring together current producers and have fun with the process. In doing so, I think she may have lost me a bit with some of the material on the album. "Bitch I'm Madonna" can be seen more as an statement of this period of time. While this album isn't my favorite and have become somewhat outdated for me over time, I still admire her courage. She stuck to her guns and continued to push her music forward, staying modern and true to herself.

Then at the start of the tour she performed Ghosttown kinda account and then it just suddenly disappeared from the set list for the remainder of the tour. Some nights she performed Who's that girl in its place. Actually @BethThereseReacts you should start reacting to her tours. The Girlie Show would be great for you since you love the Erotica album so much. TGS set is built mainly around the Erotica album with some of her biggest hits sprinkled in between.

When she says „when I struck a pose, all the gay boys lost their mind“ in Veni Vidi Vici, it’s because that’s what she says in one of her most iconic songs ever: Vogue. That song was inspired by the ballroom community. The video shows gay, black men dancing with her. No one else with that level of fame did something like that back in the day. So that song had a huge impact on her connection with the gay community

This is Madonna's 13th studio album, 32 years after her debut album was released. By this point, Madonna was already the biggest selling female artist of all time. This album I think grows and grows more as you listen. Rebel heart was supposed to be kinda two parts, rebel is one part of it and heart is another. But they kinda go back and forth a bit because to her it’s intertwined. It’s who she is as an artist. And I know you said you don’t like religion and sex mixed but live you might be a bit shocked with what she does sometimes but they are always with the best of intentions. She wants to provoke thoughts and ideas and push for change for many marginalized groups. Excited for maybe once you are done with the albums to get into her tours. It’s safe to say she literally changed the way pop stars did live shows. With her 1990 tour blonde ambition she introduced the set changes between sections of the shows with costume changes etc

Madonna has always been a very religious and spiritual person. When she was a child, she grew up in a very Christian household which explains why she has so many songs addressing God. Then in her 40s she converted to Hinduism, and then Jewish Kabbalah. Nowadays I don't really know if she still practices a religion. Also, in HeartBreakCity, she's singing about Guy Ritchie, the man she married in the year 2000 and divorced late 2008. She made a "divorce album" to follow it up in 2012 called MDNA. This album is definitely her best late-career album and has great songs on it, such as Living For Love, Devil Pray, Ghosttown, Hold Tight, Joan Of Arc, Inside Out, Messiah and the super deluxe tracks. Great reaction. Always holds a special place in my heart as she used some of my drawings in her Rebel Heart Tour during the performance of the song Rebel Heart where artwork from fans was projected on the massive screens behind her. To have an artist you have adored and provide the soundtrack to your life perform a few feet away from you with your own drawings of her behind her is just not something I had expected to have ever happen. I'd go to True Blue from here, then into Like a Prayer (both will also inform you more on her complicated relationship with catholicism and religion in general).

Hi Beth. I listened to this SO much when it came out but haven't revisited it in years so it will be a relisten for me too. I wish we could have got the double album Avicii project Madonna intended. This album references her career more than any other with callbacks (which is why I recommended it for a later reaction). At the time it felt like it could be her final album as it has a sense of her looking back and commenting on her career and place in pop history "picked up my crown, put it back on my head". And in a sense it's also the final oart of her divorce trilogy: Hard Candy/MDNA/Rebel Heart. Her Madame X project is a huge refreshing left turn after this, and actually sounds happy again after the "divorce trauma/leaks/career insecurity years.

So many thoughts! This is the first Madonna album where she "looks back" a little, with autobiographical songs and some others with musical callbacks. So funny you saying you hate mixing religious and sexual imagery - that's partly the backbone of Madonna's career and you'll notice it in her performances and filmclips. She likes to poke her finger at hypocrisy, repression and other aspects of organized religion, while reclaiming aspects of its spirituality. Didn't realise how noisy this album is until your reaction 🤪 I think I zero in on the beat, lyrics and melody when I listen, but the production is A LOT. Part of the reason the bonus tracks sound better in my opinion is the production wasn't fussed over as much. My first time seeing Madonna in concert was her tour for this album. Loved the show so much (particularly her performance of the title track) I went back a second night by myself. One thing you picked up on that I love about Madonna is that she tends to take on subjects like heartbreak and injustice with a real survivor's mentality. No wallowing, just a "dust yourself off and get back up" energy. Your assessment of Madonna's work lacking politics will change should you ever watch her video clips or live performances. There is a very strong visual element to her body of work. Most fans make their own Rebel Heart by culling some songs and re-ordering to their preference. Make your own 12- track album! ❤
