“We are nearing a failed state in Texas. And it has nothing to do with God, or natural disasters. It has everything to do with the leadership and those in the positions of public trust who have failed us,” says Beto O’Rourke amid Texas’ latest crisis: massive power outages. Aired on 02/16/2021.

History has proven multiple times that unchecked human greed will triumph. From slavery to child labor to environmental exploitation to massive fraud to war profiteering if a buck can be made someone will try. In the end we'll spend and waste more being reactionary rather than proactive.

Capitalism without reigns is a bullet train without brakes or conductor going downhill at full throttle. Little caring that the track is still being laid and they're rapidly approaching where there is no more track and only boulders... But hey, so long as the profits are rolling in big business and their bribes don't care, despite the fact that they're ON THAT TRAIN. Capitalism and Communism have the same root flaw: Both would be perfectly valid economic structures but for one thing: HUMAN GREED.

Look at the indifference to human life period. Simple adherence to basic health and safety would have saved the people of West, Texas as well as the many who’ve died in refinery incidents. Our Texas government allows for profit prisons to starve inmates and house them in tents in 100 degree plus weather while making them work 18 hour days. (The corporations charge up to 25$ an hour, but pay only pennies). Guess who has investments in fpp? They pretend to want to expel all illegals, but every time an investigation is launched you find out they, their friends and families all exploit poorly paid illegal immigrants. Ugh

@@neillconroy2183 Yeah, couldn't find a better textbook case why regulations are actually needed. Most regulations are there for a reason. Companies will not spend money to prepare for things like natural disasters unless required to do so. With everything being quarterly focused, there will never be a quarter where they will want to spend money to fix future problems. Which again explains why after this happened in 2011, no one took the initiative to make sure it didn't happen again in 2021. In fact, every time the corporate friendly legislature in Texas started to push the issue, the corporate lobbyists started crying foul and nothing was done.

I have experienced that in December in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and my toes were frozen in my shoes coz I had on the wrong shoes but never power outage! It's sad one cannot even build a snowman with the snow on the ground in Texas but the streets/roads are not cleared or treated and the power has been out for days. I cannot belief it. Imagine if the rest of the World couldn't manage less than five inches of snow like Texas in the 21st Century?????

It would've been shunned, but an overhead of a 100+ car pile up Tuesday morning in Fort Worth would show the seriousness of winter storms in Texas.

Just wait. Wait until the frozen pipes in homes start to thaw. Then there will be a mess. But all those guns will help.

It reminds me of the ice storm in Quebec back in '98. Huge sections of the electric infrastructure came crumbling down leaving millions of people without power, some for up to 3 weeks or more. Livestock froze in rural areas where there was no heating in farms. People were sheltering in school gymnasiums with cots lined up side by side. Water supply became contaminated due to lack of electricity. Some shelters had outbreaks of gastro from contaminated water. If you were lucky, you lived near a hospital where grids were re-established the quickest. The military came in to help re-build infrastructure and provide support for shelters. In Quebec, we are used to the long, cold winters, but the forces of nature are devastating even with preparation and equipment. I can't even imagine this with the pandemic in a region ill-prepared for winter.

In Washington state during ice storm some farmers went without electricity for two months. Lots of rural areas up to six weeks. The company I worked for offered shelter and showers to those in need. Many companies did. Of course no covid then.

Oh, Texas, I feel ya! As a Hurricane Maria survivor, I remember going FIVE MONTHS with no electricity or running water. Thank Heaven it wasn't cold! This is what happens when your leadership fails. I am so sorry that Texas has to be the example of such failure. Time to huddle around the fires, folks...be safe!the

Well, not to get mean but a month ago I had a Texan tell me to go back to my Igloo. I am Canadian but live in a very moderate climate. We still had winter pansies and spring bulbs coming up. I reminded this dude they had a rather cold state called Alaska. Igloos? Not here but maybe in Texas?

Michigan regularly loses power in the winter, 1 week for example a couple of years ago. Then again, Michigan is a southern state in the north

Unfortunately, the Michigan State Legislature has been under Republican control for decades. Our infrastructure is falling apart as well. Look at all the Dams breaking last year. Privatizing critical infrastructure is not working. The greedy individuals do nothing to maintain that infrastructure, and when something goes wrong the taxpayers have to shell out the money to fix it.

I live in Texas. No light and water since Monday till Wednesday. Layers of clothings and double comforters to keep warm but we are doing ok because we had reserves of drinking water and filled out bathtubs and has lots of candles and matchsticks. Preparation is very important!!. We just got electricity back but no water yet. The saddest part is the hospital I work has NO WATER and running on generators.😥😥

I went through 3 days of no power in single digits in pa in the 90s before I had a generator. No one to blame. Ice storms are a mess. I closed off one room with plastic and used a turkey cooker for 10 mins at a time. It actually got the room into the 70s in ten mins. Only had to do this once an hour. But Someone had to be awake at all times to this. I had no choice, I had small children and a bird to keep warm. We all slept in sleeping bags. I’m not recommending this but we didn’t freeze.
