I prefer gouramis! We used to have a blue gourami (grows larger than dwarfs) in a water garden fixture and it was crazy hardy. No pump or filter, just plants like water lilies and duckweed. We had it for like five years and it prevented mosquitoes from breeding in the mini pond. Sadly, we lost it during a strong storm that caused a flood that entered even our house.

I really like gouramis, but I experienced DGD/iridovirus with my first dwarf gourami, Philip. I decided to try to treat his symptoms but he got so ill that I ended up euthanizing with clove oil. I'm a little scared to get another gourami because all three of my local pet shops get their fish from the same source and I don't want to deal with the heartache again.

Hello Irene! Sounds like you need a new betta. Also, I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this on another video, but I cup feed my bettas to tone down their food aggression. It takes a little bit of training, but after a bit, the betta will swim into the cup because he knows that is where food comes from. It keeps him from fighting for food with other fish, gives bottom dwellers a chance to eat, and as an added bonus, they eat everything you feed them because it can't sink before they get to it. No added mess or necessary clean up. I also found that it was really great as my last betta got older and hit the 3 year mark, he was already trained to swim into the cup, and as his eye sight had begun to get poor, it made it a lot easier to ensure that he was being fully fed. Just a thought. I don't know if you can train a gourami, but if he's as food motivated as you say, it might be worth a try. Good luck and excellent video as always!

@@Wormwoodification hi I have the most food motivated female Betta ever. The only upside is she's easy to train bcs she'll literally do anything for a pellet. The downside is she'll quickly eat her food and then go after the Ember tetras tiny bits. It's easy to cup train a piggy Betta. I just use a kitchen cup and lure her in with a pellet. Never fails. I also lure her into a little breeder box that hangs inside the tank. That's actually easier bcs I don't have to stand there holding a cup. She learned to associate the cup or holding pen with food in one day. When I gently let her swim out, she spends a good hour foraging on the bottom and all through the plants to pick up any tiny pieces that might have been missed. 🐖

I honestly couldn’t decide so ended up with one of each. Separate tanks of course. I was worried about fin rot etc…on the betta so went with a plakat which worked out very well.

I actually have 2 male powder blue gourmai and a female betta in the same tank. They get along swimmingly! I have one big and one small gourmai. My smaller one will try to bully my betta sometimes but the big one protects her. When they feed the bigger one actually stays in between my betta and small gourmai. It’s actually pretty cool to see how they interact. I also have 3 Corydoryas, shrimp and 2 snails. They all live together without problem

I have a honey gourami with a female betta they dont interact even during feeding so theyre pretty safe together I think and if u notice any fin nips on ur betta Id take the smaller gourami out and put it in a tank on its own as someone who had a failed sorority tank (lost 1 separated the rest) I very much worry about tankmate aggression with bettas mine werent too bad occasionally nipped fins but healed and didnt appear stressed after a few months of having it 1 was dead and had half her face ripped off so just be careful with gouramis and bettas together but its not as dangerous as a sorority tank

@@typicallyusual6984 I have a 20 gallon with plenty of live plants and hiding places. It helps that betta is a top swimmer and gourmai is a top/middle swimmer. Corydoryas are a bottom feeder fish. It’s a gallon of water per inch of fish so if you have 2 fish that get to 2 inches you need atleast 4 gallons of water. I think I also lucked out with my fish cause there was a trial and error with my gourmais I had at first a few regular gourmai that were very mean that I ended up returns cause they were killing other fish.

I've got a 29 gallon with 7 black skirts, 9 neons, 6 cories, 1 pleco and, I am proud to say I have a female beta in there for over a year and last month added a powder blue gourami (male) and they are all getting along really well. I do have a lot of coverage and things so I think it's a good balance. Thanks for your excellent content, when I "met" you, I had a beta. Now we have four aquariums in our home!

I've had both bettas and gouramis over the years when I've had a tank set up, although bettas were the ones I kept more often than not. When I got back into fishkeeping last year after a several year hiatus, I wanted to set up tanks for both (separate tanks, that is). Currently I have a 20gal that's housing my halfmoon male betta in a community that includes 2 sparkling gouramis (he's pretty chill, and surprisingly cohabitates well with the pair of sparklings), 10gal with a male honey gourami (who's quite feisty), and another 10gal with a female betta (who is actually the more aggressive of the two bettas, but doesn't bully her other tankmates). For me, bettas and dwarf gouramis are about equal in my book, depending mostly on each individual fish's personality. Admittedly, though-I've got more of a soft spot for those sparkling gouramis. Small, graceful, beautifully colored-and with personalities to boot.

After a tank cracked out of the blue, without thinking much I placed my betta in my 40g tank with my honey gouramis (6). And to my surprise, its working out! It was iffy the first couple of weeks, however, its now working. SO in my case, a gourami and betta tank worked out :)

I have a female betta and a honey gourami together in a 55. The female has been around about a year and the gourami a few years. (I had a 5 gallon ready to go in case they had issues but they're always sharing their favorite hide together like they're roommates so no issues there.) I love gouramis but I have to say for these two at least, the betta definitely has more personality.

hi irene! i loved this video so very much - gouramis and bettas are both practically the same fish in my book. i've kept a honey gourami and loved him to bits before he passed on, and my mother has a 6 year old opaline gourami. i've been keeping bettas for as long as i can remember, and currently have 3 that i absolutely spoil half to death, lol. you mentioned missing having a betta, and i can't help but to comment and recommend a breeder that i discovered that ships across the continental US - betta squad USA. they're based in texas and i've purchased 2 of my 3 bettas from them, and i haven't been happier with them! my oldest one has not cropped up with a single disease and all he's done is be reckless and tear some of his fins, but otherwise i find the quality of their fish is super high, and the prices are amazing! you can either pick your own betta for close to $40 (counting shipping), or you can get your own mystery betta sent to you for closer to $20 (also counting shipping). like you, i reached a point where i wanted a break from bettas after having such bad luck with them after being a constant buyer from petco/smart, but after doing a little digging i stumbled across betta squad USA, and they are my only recommendation for breeders based on my experience with their customer services and the longevity of their fish. i hope it's something you look into, and i hope to see you get another betta soon!!!

I just wont buy any bettas from petco. Ive had so many die within 2 months , after bringing them home, that I have determined their breeders are awful. I have been keeping fish as long as I can remember and have better luck with poor Meijer bettas than petco's fancy ones. Never again! I will look into this company and thanks! Petco has a great selection but that means nothing if they die straight away. My sister kept buying them lured in by the selection, and in the past year we have lost 6 like this! Only 1 remains alive, and these were in many different tanks and set ups. Cough cough we have 8 aquariums now! lol

Dwarf Gourami are much less aggressive when kept in groups of 4 or more, otherwise they get stressed and bored. They also need a minimum 10 gallon tank and 3 gallons per fish. I've had a group in my 50gal for 3 years and they are so gentle with everything else in the tank.

I absolutely love bettas and gourami! I've had three bettas and they seem fine for months on end.. until they don't. I'm giving up on them for a while. I got a pair of sunset gourami and two honeys. The sunsets quickly started gasping for air at the top of the tank and they didn't last long. But the two honeys are doing great! They get along for the most part. There's a little chasing, but it's not just one of them. One will chase, and the other will turn around and chase back. Then it's done. I also have chili rasbora and CPD'S in that tank along with 9 coreys. All is well thankfully. Love the video! Have a great day.

EVERY Betta I've had got sick! But they were all ok with the other fish in community tanks (tetras, Cory's etc). The dwarf gouramis I've kept were all monsters and nothing was safe to keep with them, including each other. I found that neither species were really long lived, about 12 months, but that could just be my fault. Personally, I think that which is best comes down to the individual fish you kind of fall for at the time when you first see it in the fish store. Care of each is pretty much the same. I've literally just seen the most beautiful dwarf blue gourami with red fins at my local fish store. Found this video doing research before I set up a spare tank I have at home tonight. Lucky I have a spare filter already running in another tank. Just hope he's still there tomorrow morning!

I think honey gourami are a better choice then either - Less unpredictable in their behavior, and not that much interbreeding having been carried out, so they usually are sturdier than dwarf ones. Having to choose between them, their more distinctive appearance make me say I'd go with Bettas, maybe a female in a community tank and a male alone in a separate, smaller one save for reproductive period, when I might try breeding them. But my favourite Anabantiform (Labirynth fish) are pearl gouramis - They require a larger tank, but they are very peaceful and eerily beautiful. As a "centerpiece", one or a pair are warrantied to immediately grab the attention.

Except for the point when I kept medium-large cichlids primarily I've always had a betta. I'm actually in the process of setting up a tank (which I hope to have done tomorrow) for a betta. There sure has been an explosion of options as far as colorations and fin types these days. Back when I first started we just had the standard lyre tail males. And usually just red, blue, maybe purple, etc. My current favorite is the crown tail. Even though the half moons, plakats, etc. seem to be more popular as of late. And "Dumbo ear" wasn't a thing back in the day, either, lol. I have had a dwarf gourami before as well and if I remember right it got along fine with all of the community tank mates. But this is going back to when I was a kid in the 80's so the details are somewhat faded, lol.

The Great and Powerful Trixie, a female powder blue dwarf gourami, just came home from the fish store. Currently floating her bag and getting her acclimated. She'll be mostly alone in a 10 gallon tower tank for a while, and if all goes well, next month I will look for something red or orange, like ember tetras or chili rasboros for contrast. I say 'mostly' alone becasue I have bladder snails and am leaving them be as a cleanup crew. They probably came in on my live plants.

I have experienced the sick gourami syndrome first hand in a tank where water parameters were good all the other fish doing great my dwarf gourami eventually died a couple months after I got it for inexplicable reasons. I would recommend a three spot gourami over both because they are insanely much hardier fish and I have kept several for long lives and even bred them.

I have no experience with either, the closest i have is my pearl gourami. Hes a big colorful male who loves to eat, he is about twice the size of any dwarf gourami ive seen being just about 6 inches. Hes not aggressive usually, but i wouldn't put it with any other gourami's based on how he reacted to a reflective surface.

Bettas like black-water since it has many health benefits for them, but will be still happy and healthy in water without tannins! Warning about dwarf gouramis though, some of them are very prone to disease as well as the aforementioned iridovirus

I love my blue paradise gourami. One of the hardest exotic fish in the world, they don't need a heated tank, show no fear. Mine ravenously eats right out of my hand as soon as it sees food from above. It has stunning colors and flowing fins.

I have had a betta for a month now and 2 male dwarf powder blue gouramis for about 3 months. They were originally in a 10g (obviously temporary). Found out they were both males and were constantly chasing each other. I purchased a 40g and moved one of the gouramis into the 40g. This weekend I did a big move, shifting the betta into the 10g and the other gourami into the 40g. There are loads of plants in both tanks so it should be interesting to see what happens. The betta is very scared at the moment by his new home - I wanted him in the 10g so I could spend more time with him as the tank is in our dinning room whereas the 40g and 5g is in our back bedroom. I love both but my gouramis are definitely dicks while my betta is so sweet and usually excited to see me so I can feed him haha.

I used to keep 1 male betta with 3 females, and I also am currently keeping 1 gourami. The male died after a few months from fin rot. 1 female got beaten to death by 2 other females right away. The second one jumped out of the tank after 6 months. The third died after a year from dropsy. I got the gourami right after I bought the bettas, and it is still alive and strong. Moreover, it has never even been sick. And I have never used a heater. So I vote for the gourami. However, I believe the easiest labyrinth fish to keep is the paradise fish. I have one also.

They both are super fish to keep. As far as personality and entertaining behavior, so far I am voting points for Betta. Bettas have more health problems these days compared to 25 years ago, they are not meant to have long fins and this presents a handicap to how they are able to swim. Tank mates probably view those long flowing fins as plant material, and that’s why they are getting nipped. Also they may appear as a threat to other fish we just throw in the tanks with Bettas. Not naturally occurring in their separate environments. Also a river or other body of water , have tons of plant cover, room to move away to another area where they are not so threatened. “Mycroft “ my Honey gourami , gold male , has only been with me for 5 months. I had a pair of powder blues years ago, they were very shy when I was near the tank. Even feeding time. . Mycroft is much more brave and interactive with me. He only hides to sleep , and gets outta the way when doing tank maintenance. Mycroft has big shoes to fill , to win me over to 50 50 Betta Vs Dwarf or small Gourami . I still want a Betta ! So My Opinion, and it’s only an opinion, is go for the Betta with great colours rather than long flowing fins , even long gill fins are not healthy. I bet you will all have less trouble. I’ve kept fish for over 30 years , never had a sick Betta. They have all lived 3 1/2 to 4 years. You have to stick with fish that are known to do well in a community. Always add your most aggressive types of fish last in your aquarium that has all the other occupants in it that you want, for a few weeks. There’s always subtle differences in fish behavior just like people and other animals. That’s the risk we have to take. Please let’s not treat the Bettas like disposable objects, living only to entertain us, they are living creatures and have the right to a decent life.

I haven’t had any gouramis, but had a betta for a short time in a community tank. I eventually rehomed the betta due to compatibility issues. But if I had another aquascaped tank I would have kept him as it was really cool to see him exploring the tank and I feel enjoying the tank. He only chased some of the much smaller fish, but I think he just overall stressed the smaller fish out. 😟 I wish I could have kept him.

Funny, but I was encouraged back into fishkeeping and started with Bettas.................... then I saw Dwarf Gouramis in the pet store and moved from 5 gallon tanks with Bettas to 10 and 18 gallon planted tanks with DG's and a few tank mates. I am now looking for Honey Gouramis. I will continue to keep female Bettas, I find them lovely.

I have a well behave flame gourami named Ember and she is the sweetest, she ignores my cherry shrimp (even the fry), she goes along my embers and corys, and yes she eats a lot. But i still prefer bettas because i think they have more personality and there's something about them that makes u think they can actually understand you. I have 2 males in separate tanks named Puff and Chili, different types but equally beautiful.

ive always had a fondness for the female bettas, almost every tank i set up usually ends up somehow containing a betta girl along with whatever else i have in. i have also kept honey gouramis, and i feel that those are my go to if i want a tank with cherry shrimp, and a labyrinth fish. but i still think i prefer the bettas the girls are just so enjoyable and ive always found them much healthier than the flashy males (likely due to poor breeding practices to get so many males around the market)

I have 2 female powder blue dwarf gouramis in my 29 gal aquarium mollies, guppies, neon tetras, otos, albino corys, and 1 medium sized leopard angelfish (for control of livebearer baby population). The gouramis are very peaceful, accept when the angelfish gets a bit aggressive, but they can fight back to protect themselves. I did have to get rid of 1 molly male that became extremely aggressive and biting, a bully. But, other than him, no problems with getting along. And they are beautiful and graceful to watch.

My last Dwarf had the DGD and passed away in a horrible way. Pretty much endemic among the population now. Do yourself a favor and get something else. They will be fine and then 6 -12 months later it starts and spirals down pretty quickly after that.

They do all have different personalities! I kept pearl gouramis in a community tank as a teenager and never had aggression issues. Currently I have a male butterfly betta who is the laziest, most chill betta ever. Any time I tried a mirror he ran and hid from it. I've never seen him flare. I also have a giant Crowntail female who will jump out of the water for food, had flared at me and once built a bubble nest. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My dwarf gourami killed his tank matess. I had to return him to the shop. My Bettas have always been chilled about the other tank fish.

I tried to have 1 of each in the same 10G tank. Bad idea. The gourami bullied the betta until it unfortunately died. So i suggest picking one you like most and thats it

long-finned bettas definitely get sick more, and samurai bettas are known to have an increased chance of tumors and they have an estimated 50% chance of developing diamond eye, which is essentially going blind. I'd give the hardiness point to the gourami personally.

I’ve heard dgs are actually very difficult to sell, hence why they’re hard to find from breeders, because of the such low prices from pet stores. Another detail, I think bettas are hardier than dgs, you didn’t really mention how devastating the iridovirus is, 90% of big chain pet store dgs have it and if they do they will 100% die unfortunately :( That being said I still honestly kind of prefer dgs, they just seem more interesting to me personally, I’m planning on getting one soon haha (hopefully from a reputable breeder though it’s been very difficult to find any that aren’t from fish farms online)

Yes, there is more variety in colors and shapes of bettas, but for me a colorful flame gourami is equal striking and beautiful.

I love my little gourami Ollie but when he builds his nest he does get quite aggressive so I wont be keeping him in a community tank again

I had a healthy dwarf gourami die out of no where :( i didnt know about dward gourami disease! he had no outer visible infections or fungus so im not sure if what caused his death but i havnt been able to have a dwarf gourami since

I keep the Betta and Gouramis separate but that's because my Veiltail came blind (thanks PetSmart) so she needs extra love. I keep her with the ADFs, but my Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami Wheatley is scared of the Female(?) Opaline Gourami. It's a shame actually because I've never seen Pearl really nip at Wheatley but he's young and she's older so he never sticks around to find out.

In my personal experience, dwarf gouramis are short lived. Once they become adults, they just get weak, and die off. Although, I have to put a positive plug in for the dwarf honey gourami seems to have a longer life span.

I would say the agression point definitely has to go to the Gourami instead of the Betta, since you can actually keep a group of Gouramis with mixed genders together in one tank.

Betta is such a great fish, so resilient, beautiful, I had one when I was a beginner, I thought betta was the best beginner fish until almost every other fishes in my tank love to nip his fins, eventually developed fin rot and then die from stress. Gourami for the win, since it's also beautiful and does have the same fin problem

Honey gouramis and female bettas are maybe better but similar options. Both having the big personalities and colors but better personalities and are much better in community tanks (way lower aggression).

Both are amazing! I think the Bettas won simply because of their more brilliant colors and long fins. I have had both. I am looking to go with a Honey Gourami in my next tank. 🌹❤ Gina Hetlage

Im taking a break with bettas😮‍💨. I got 3 with bad genetics. One got a tumor on his head. Another one keeps biting his tail. And another one has a short caudal peduncle. I've given them what they need to thrive. Maybe I'm just unlucky. They're all active tho, just not normal I guess.

Betta, without doubt, I prefer their personality to gourami by a mile. I have a flare-y crowntail boi who will even do basic tricks with me if he's in the mood. I have never kept him with tankmates though. Gourami I've had were just kinda...bullies, but they were part of the first community tank I adopted and the stocking just wasn't ideal for anyfish.

My flame honey gourami keeps attacking my corydoras trying to get eggs from them to eat. They started laying eggs and she discovered this tasty food source comes from them ugh. The normal honey gourami I have is very gentle. The female is the flame and the male is the regular honey. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Im moving my gouramis.

Flame gourami usually male , the female are very dull in color and pretty unappealing ( greyish color), there're rarely any shop sale female gourami

go for it, some of the can be very very shy. but i got some to like when i pet them, i mean that should say enough.. XD the ones i have right now, use to let me pet them, but then they stayed a place with cats and now they only come to say hi
