I'm crying right now... just liked I cried through the finale of Feud. And yes, I feel like they were sisters under the skin - just like Blanche and Baby Jane, they kept hurting each other, and they missed the great opportunity of actually becoming friends. Bette couldn't forgive, and Joan was too fragile and proud to ask for it... They were each other's reflections they couldn't stand. Feud finale was the most moving and beautiful hour in recent years of television.

Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon did these great ladies justice. The Feud series had so many powerful scenes and this montage is so artfully done. "She may be the only person in the entire world who knows how you feel right now..." "I'm sorry I wasn't more generous with you." "I wish I'd been a friend to you..." Oh how I wish they had been great friends to each other. "You will always be young, you will always be beautiful... a goddess of your time."

Norma Shearer was more of a rival to Joan Crawford since they were both at MGM and they both sought after the same film roles. Throughout the 1930s Crawford complained frequently that because of Norma being the wife of MGM producer Irving Thalberg, she was forever locked into the number-two spot when it came to good scripts and money spent. "Big-budget costume meant Norma, low-budget ex-shop girl meant me." Some of the roles she lost to Shearer were Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Marie Antoinette, both popular and prestigious hits that Crawford envied. Another Shearer role that Crawford missed out on was Juliet Capulet in _Romeo and Juliet_ . At the premiere, Crawford said to her pal Constance Bennett, "I couldn't wait for those two old turkeys to die, could you?" When Thalberg died prematurely at age 37, Crawford was delighted his widow would no longer have first dibs on scripts. However when she found out Shearer snagged the lead role in _Idiot's Delight_ , she headed straight to MGM head honcho Louis B. Mayer and complained, "The role calls for an ex-chorus girl. That's _me_ ! Norma can't sing. Norma can't dance." Mayer explained to Joan what Norma _could_ do. In his will, Thalberg left Shearer his bloc of MGM stock. If peeved, Norma could vote against Mayer. So to make Norma happy, she would continue to get first crack at all MGM properties. "Christ," said Joan, "she really rode through this studio on his balls, didn't she?"
@valsainking

@@RaymondHng Yet, in the end, it was Crawford who would go on to outgrow MGM and become a larger-than-life Hollywood icon, while Norma's fame still remains locked up in the proverbial MGM film vaults.

This is so well done:) We won’t know every word spoken or every moment these two shared off the silver screen, but maybe deep down they truly wanted to care for one another..they both had just been so deeply hurt in their own lives that they didn’t know how to show it. Moral of the story is, if you can show love towards someone and get beyond pride and ones own insecurities, show them that love. You could change their lives forever.

Bravo! A well constructed homage to two unforgettable characters in the Golden Age of Hollywood. A fitting tribute as the final episode of The Feud showed us how each of these women were caught in a web of their own making and lost the chance to love & support each other instead of tearing each other down at every step of their careers. Sad how it all came to pass and how quickly fame & celebrity fade away. Carrie Fisher wisely said, “Celebrity is just obscurity biding its time”

It's funny isn't it how we all can relate to this without being actors or actresses. Those who feel beautiful and those who feel ugly. There's no worse feeling than someone telling you you're ugly. Whether you know it or not. Likewise when someone tells you you're talentless. Regardless of your trade in life. Talent and/or beauty can never stop the envy we have for others.

This is lovely, but as for Sisters Under the Skin: Several years ago I interviewed critic Judith Crist, who was friends with both Bette & Joan. I actually suggested to her that the two stars were sisters under the skin and Crist balked at that. She said they were too different to be friends. As an example she said when she talked with Bette it was about politics and a variety of other subjects, while Joan spent one long conversation talking about herlecent dental work. Crist liked them both, but felt they shared only superficial qualities.
