I just watched a video of Ethel Merman singing the same song, which BTW she introduced on Broadway in "Panama Hattie". I love Bette, but Ethel does it much better and without a mike. I doubt she was ever allowed to use a mike with all the power her voice had. Broadway was better before everybody had to be miked. Every voice had to be big enough to be heard in the back of the theater and Ethel's voice could be heard over all the other voices on stage. It must have been a great thrill to see and hear all that vocal energy and to watch them dance while they were singing. She was Broadway's version of a Wagnerian female voice, a Broadway Brunhilde.

@@sevillomatic Could she fill a 1200 seat house to the doors and even be heard outside like Ethel could? A mic doesn't allow you to see the performer full face and you've got to see the whole face to get the full effect of what they are singing. Their facial expression is just as important as their voice when they sing. Bette should only be booked into a venue with great acoustics so you can hear her real voice. I doubt that she is insecure, but I bet a lot of singers today are very insecure without their big mic. I had a big Wagnerian dramatic soprano voice and was never allowed to use a mic so I never developed that insecurity, my problem was drowning out everybody else. When I was doing amature musical theater we didn't use mics and I was often used offstage when I wasn't required onstage to beef up the chorus, for both the men (I'd sing in my tenor range in a chest voice) and for the women and the full chorus in my natural voice in which ever voice part they needed and there were others who did the same. We never used mics, just little tricks like that and we could fill a theater with the sound.
