In 1988, my two buddies and I went to see "Beaches" at the theater. Not a guy movie, but we'd seen just about everything else, and it was playing at the dollar show. One of the guys was my cousin, and his brother had passed away at just 40 a few months earlier. We cried and cried and cried, and not once did we feel "less manly."

"Beaches" is amazing. Here's a secret: Some "chick flix" are soooo good. "Steel Magnolias" and "Fried Green Tomatoes" are very worth watching. And if you have never seen "The Color Purple", you should.

This song is a key song in the wonderful movie Beaches". It's based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart. Equally as good. But after "Beaches" she also wrote "I'll Be There" the sequel to Beaches. It's about what happens with C.C. and Whitney's daughter. It is every bit as funny and heartbreaking as Beaches. Yes, you must watch Beaches. Have tissues handy. You'll laugh, you'll cry but you'll never be sorry you watched it. Great reaction sweet lady!

My lovely wife, Lynne, sang with the Primrose Choir for over fourteen years, she had a tremendous voice but was so humble and shy. She died with cancer October 21. Lynne loved this song and sang it to me most weeks before choir practice every Wednesday night. She said it was our song and I was her hero, the choir sang it for me a few weeks ago and it was beautiful and so emotional. Thank you Bette Midler.

My grandma passed away yesterday morning. She loved this song and dedicated it to her sister, who she was very close with and who passed away in the late 90s. Its funny that you reacted to this song just a day after her passing. I will always think of her when I hear this song, because I know how much it meant to her. I love and miss her so much, but I'm happy that she's reunited with her sister and family in heaven ❤

When I hear this song, I think of my dad, he was actually my stepdad, but he married my mom and took us 4 kids and raised us like we were his own, he served time in Vietnam, but he came home to us. He's 78 and still going strong, I don't know how he got through it, but he married a brother a year younger then me in 2017 and my middle brother is 2018, out of 5 kids 3 of us are left, my sister was born when I was 22 lol. To this day I can't get over how this did not even get nominated for an Oscar for best song. It would have won if it were nominated for sure. The movie is wonderful. Bette Midler got most of the attention for the movie but Barbara Hershey had the best performance in "Beaches". She was phenomenal in this film. She and Bette Midler play so well off of each other. A must see movie and a great, great song.

@Ryan Feit - The reason why this song wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for Best Song this particular year (1988) is because it didn’t qualify. The Best Song category rules state that the music/lyrics must be originally composed during the nomination year. Unfortunately, for the Beaches movie, ‘Wind Beneath My Wings” song is an older song, that was remade, and covered by Bette Midler, for this movie, thereby making the song ineligible to compete for Best Song at the Oscars that 1988 year. But I do agree, if the song could have been nominated, it no doubtlessly, would have won. But that’s why it wasn’t nominated.

Just about everyone has had a person beneath their wings - a parent, partner, or other person who has always been their cheerleader. If they're lucky, they've had several of these magic people. Midler's voice just soars. In her younger days, she did back up with Barry Manilow. I'm glad that you reacted to her, because she doesn't get nearly enough attention on reaction channels. Cheers to you!

I've said this a thousand times; this makes a thousand and one. Bette Midler is the very rare artist who can literally squeeze every single ounce of emotion out of every single note that comes out of her mouth. Not many people have that ability. That is what makes her one of the greats. A few years after this, she was the final guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show where she sang One more for my Baby. She not only made Carson (and the entire viewing audience) cry, but she won an Emmy for it.

I saw it and heard this song not long after I lost my best friend at the time and it made me just lose it. I still cry when I hear it all these years later. Beautiful song! The powerful words can definitely remind us of someone important in our lives, like a parent, sibling, friend or romantic partner. The first time I heard this song was on Sheena Easton's 1982 album "Madness, Money and Music." In the 1988 tearjerker movie "Beaches," starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as friends since childhood, Bette recorded this version for the sountrack and it became a huge hit, including No. 1 in the U.S. and Australia, No. 3 in Canada and No. 5 in the U.K. Songwriters Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar won the Grammy for song of the year and Bette Midler won the Grammy for record of the year for this song in 1989. When I had to move away from my hometown for a job, and I knew I was not going to be back very often, I played this song for my best friend on our last hangout night together. He had been beside me through the highest of highs and lowest of lows in my life, and was the one man I could always rely on to have fun, make memories, and be there for me. Having to move away was the toughest part of our friendship, but when I played this song, I told him that everything in the song was true for the two of us. It was the first time I had ever left him speechless. Right afterwards, I told him that our friendship would never die. I had already lost friends due to my moving, and I was not looking forward to reliving the experience. This was the song that steeled our friendship for the long months of being away from each other, and always makes me smile for my friend. The original movie, "Beaches", is all about friendship, and the trials and tribulations that come with it. Thank you for playing this song.

My grandfather was my role model, he was never negative in anyway, supported me emotionally, financially and spiritually, I always saw him as my Eagle. Like many, this song has that relatable personal feeling

This was played at my mom’s funeral… she loved the movie Beaches and it was the last movies we saw in her hospital bed together 3 days before she passed…. I play it everyday for 14 years since she passed!!!

Two Bette Midler movies you should watch are Beaches that this song comes from and The Rose that was loosely based on Janis Joplin and had the song The Rose. Both beautiful. For a singer I don't think you have watched and is probably the best male voice out there now is Adam Lambert. I suggest watching him singing Cher's song Believe to Cher at The Kennedy Center Awards. It's beautiful! Once you hear him though he is very addictive. He's so good the band Queen chose him to be their front man and he has been touring with them for 10 years now. I suggest watching him singing Who Wants to Live Forever with Queen + Adam Lambert at the Isle of Wight in 2016... it's incredible!

"Beaches" was a great film: Bette Midler, Barbara Hershey, and Mayim Bialik starred.

Oh hun 🤗 Gets to you doesn’t it, a tearjerker that tugs at the heartstrings. UK singer and actor Stephen Houghton did a nice male version, his character in the drama series London’s Burning performed it, then it was released as a single. Lovely words. More recently, the Utah vocal harmony trio Gentri did a nice kind of mash up of it with another song You Say with their singing friends to pay tribute to their mums on Mothering Sunday 🥰

Mayim Bialik (Blossom and Big Bang Theory) plays Midler's character as a child in Beaches. Feisty little thing. Good movie.

Yes this song gets me every single time I hear it it was actually written for her best friend who passed away if you’ve never seen the movie Beaches you need to watch the movie it is such an amazing movie and the reason it’s such an amazing movie is because it’s a true story it’s almost like a biopic in through the whole movie you see everything through Bette Midler‘s eyes but this song really sums up everything about the movie basically I could be famous but at the end of the day the real reason I’m so strong is because of you whether that be your mom your dad your best friend your brother your sister that one person that gets you through everything that’s what this song sums up is that you mean so much to me and through the whole movie you see everything you see all the ups and downs of Bette Midler being famous but when he gets to the end is win this song really just shows everything and shows that even though she was famous that stuff really didn’t even matter when it came to her and her best friend she would do anything for her best friend he’s really have to watch the movie

I've been hearing this song since I was a child but when my sister told me last month that this was my Mother's favorite song I became interested. When I played it and read the lyrics, I started crying....

This song hits home with me. I have two daughters, one is disabled, her older sister is amazed by her little sisters strength. My younger daughter has gone through hell in her life with mental disabilities, diabetes, epilepsy, and growth disorders, yet she stays strong. Her older sister stands confounded by her sisters pure courage. I am going to cry. Thanks!

This song was a monster hit. Johnny Carson loved her and had her on multiple songs. I believe after his death she sang this song. I think this is from the movie, Beaches. Yup it is. Her best friend dies in the movie. You should watch this tear jerker.

You reacted to it the way I ALWAYS do when I hear this song, I ALWAYS burst into tears. She didn't write this song, it was written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley. It started out as a mid tempo song but musician Bob Montgomery who recorded a demo for it, changed it to a ballad.

In the video the two little girls become friends. One is the Bette character. They remain friends for years. And the woman who is Bette's friend dies in the movie. It's a sad movie but very good. Bette's friend gives her custody of her daughter after she dies at the end.

I don't have any sisters, so I didn't really get how much this song meant until I had a daughter. Everything is so different. Making her feel happy and beautiful and loved is so much more important than anything else. Now I know how hard my mom worked on making me feel confident and proud. She almost never spent anything on herself, and it was only if there was something left over after she took care of me. I didn't appreciate it then the way that I do now. I pray that someday my daughter has a baby of her own, so that she knows this kind of love.
