@Brant_Moore I've been watching tons of videos lately, my 7 year old has a u brake setup like mine and his are incredibly hard to pull so I eliminated his gyro and installed a noodle at the caliper instead of the y cable and its still hard, next imma try clear pads. Hope that helps

Changing the angle of your London mod via brake pad convex/concave spacers was a good idea. Never messed with that. Might have to try that

Lots of good ideas come from these amazing tips, which are also applicable to problems of obsolete mountain bike brake systems. Also, we used to use heavy duty motorcycle brake cables and levers on our mountain bikes. Those parts went back to the earliest "repack" days of the "Klunkers." Those parts don't really add any weight, but are smooth and solid with no stretch or give.

Thank you man I hope they help people. Motorcycle cables are an interesting thought. I’m going to look into that!

Set my brake up nice recently with a Vbrake style hack to my Ubrake..using the Vbrake noodle in place of the straddle kit under the TT. Cable goes straight to the Ubrake = better geometry for effortless lever pull and much better braking.. Only issue now is I went out for a rip around town tonight in the dark and half the brake fell off! The lug hit the road I heard it fall but couldn't find it in the dark. Not sure what lug I need now but at least I have 1 left for comparison 😂

To adjust brakes on a straight cable, is there a difference between the barrel adjuster on the lever vs the one that screws into the frame?
@Brant_Moore4 жыл бұрын
I’ve only found that it might affect the feel of the braking. The lever adjuster seems to make the brakes feel less solid when it is out so I always adjust at the frame first and only in the lever if I have to.

I screwed up the mod for the Astroglide upper cables. When i pounded that hole out, only one side spread out, while the other stayed in it's original position. I got a fix for it, as it's just BARELY holding the adjuster back. A little filing, and it'll slide through no prob. My next objective is to buy a chunk of automotive keyway, and turn it into the upper cable guide. I'll send you vids when i get that done, but i'm waiting for availability on the Shado Sano detangler so i can have those set screws like you have in your old Odyssey GTX detangler. As for the lower cables, i just cut them super long and gave them as lazy of a bend as possible. They sling real low, but i have perfect clearance for them. For now, i'm just running a Y upper cable.

Very interesting man! The custom aspect of it all is so cool. Maybe you’ll come up with something that works better than what I’ve done!

Great tips, thanks. I might return to brakes one day. I wonder if bmx will apply some sort of hydraulic brakes like magura hs33

Great tips. A video going over tuning the gyro would be cool. I learned how back in the day and the skill seems lost. Start with getting the break pad gap even. Then the distance from the lower tabs to the lower Bering cable mounts even. THEN adjust the upper cable for break pull and not flopping. Most people having problems are tuning the lower cable housings to be even and the bearing is off so it will always flop straight or at 180%

That's a great idea. I feel like I honestly haven't even fully learned the best way to do it myself. I just go by feel usually

I had dual cables for a short while. I had those special linear cables down low. That double back on the knarps is a great idea I got the smaller knarps and I put those ends in my gyro and the lever ends in the brake ends kind of backwards. Dual cables are no comparison to any other.

Brant Moore the elbow you have on the front part of the frame does that rub against your frame and scratch it ?

I really appreciate your upper brake mod, but I have to say, I have the M2 lever and cable, and it is SOOO good. Cable replacement is $5.95, really not that bad. I can't recommend it enough. I use that with a Shadow gyro that also has built in knarps but I don't need to use them, it all fits and works really good (I have a 10mm spacer under my stem). From there it's a regular gyro lower, and a cheap rear brake. With Odyssey pads and anodized rims....my wheel locks up and stays locked when I want it. I want to London mod the lower, so I bought a one-piece Kink lower gyro cable, but it's too long and I can't modify it without cutting the ball ends, which is the whole purpose of the cable.....fail. I'll have to go with a regular London mod setup and use knarps, which I didn't want to do.

That is pretty cheap for the cable. The main thing for me with it is that it doesn’t need a specific cable. Any inner cable will work in any scenario, but that’s just me. I’m so particular because of tricks like ice 270 fuf on a double coping spine where if the brakes move at all it’s not working I wondered about that kink cable. Bummer to hear it didn’t work for you.

i used to used inner gear cable from MTB for the lower inner cables and normal outer cable then just cut them to size work for me and im 250 LBS
