Better burning Oil Lamp

I figured out why my oil lamp smelled & burned a lot of oil :)

Thank you Thank youThank you Mine was always burning uneven and chewing through wick if the fuel was below 3 inches. Also, i think its more like a distillation problem. If you compress the wick a little, the fuel can only go up. If theres space, it will evaporate, flow around, and burn before at the top, charring all the edges premature, causing embers, and more charring. Good for alcohol, not oil. Im using paraffin oil rn and it burns hotter, brighter, and finally evenly. Gonna switch to K1 kerosene and try that. If i still have slow wicking half full it'll be cheap wick Note, remove the burr if their is one, pintch with the wick in place or youll over do it, lastly put a mirror or foil on the wall if its near one, like i need to now, to keep the house from burning. When the air/fuel mixture is off, that means you can change one of two things and it sounds like you altered the fuel with some success. I'll have to check if my wick is tight or not. The way I fixed mine (similar issue) was that I added a couple pennies at the bottom of the glass to increase air flow and improve combustion. Just slipped them under the glass, resting flat and held in place by the vertical metal glass holder thingys.

I fixed this with a cheap lantern by simply buying a roll of better wick. The original wasn't a full half inch.

Thanks. Very good information. I use a similar lamp during power outages. It's probably over 20 years old. In fact I'm not sure how old it is. It's had the same wick and blue colored lamp oil in the fount ever since I got it. But when the lights go out she fires right up and burns great. I've recently bought and used a few Tubular Lanterns and I find that I prefer them. Dietz Lanterns and Feuer Hand are nice and affordable 🔥

Hi. Nice video! I just watched another video where the guy (Gray Bailey "Pipers, preppers and homesteaders: Trim the wick of a lamp for maximum light") cut the wick into a conic shape and meant it will increase the surface of the flame and thus making the lamp burning brighter. I would say following the arc-shape of this cap you removed (this with the 2 taps) cannot do any harm. I myself fiddling around to substitute expensive lamp oil with cheap light fuel oil (but your wife would not like it since it smells a bit). Have a good day. See u.

Hi Dave...I have 3 oil lamps in which I use Medallion lamp oil and there is absolutely no smell..I just purchased a vintage oil lamp..changed the wick..cleaned the font and put in the same oil. The ODOR OF KEROSENE is intense! Why do you think this is The burner is clean..Any suggestions???Thank you

All I can suggest is wick height,... I find this with kerosene heaters too. Try the wick to the point that the flame is almost yellow instead of orange & the flame is just starting to "dance" at the tip but not much, just bordering from still to jittering.
