This is the BCS equivalent of Walt if he went go karting with Jesse

As funny as this comment is, there’s so much truth to it. I think that’s where BCS separates itself from BB: the earnestness of the main character rubs off on the tone and vibe of the rest of the show. In BCS, there are two scenes with Jimmy and Chuck alone that consistently make me cry (this scene and the flashback in the series finale). In BB it doesn’t matter how much sympathy and heartache Jesse elicited, I’d always feel like shit because I knew Walt made him feel this way. This is not a fault against BB, I enjoy watching a thought-provoking trainwreck, but I think it’s scenes like this that exemplify one of the many reasons that Better Call Saul feels different.

"You never mattered to me at all" My perspective changed after watching this. Here you can see him enjoying, having fun with his brother, he even took care of him after he's drunk. I believe Chuck really did care about his brother, he just let his anger and hatred took over.

That is why I cried like a baby during this scene. It reminds me so much of my little brother and me, how I used to kinda look down on him and things he said I even said some very Chuck things to my lil bro, but it was just bottled up anger and a bit of jealousy. I always loved him even if I pretended not to. It would almost seem like I hated him to the outside world. But I still loved him. And now that that is past us and we now hang out like we did as kids it makes it so much sadder that Chuck just like me probably could with enough time finally let go of that hate. And instead respect his brother for what he is and learn to express your love properly.

What I love is that Jimmy takes absolutely no offence at Chuck stealing the mic. Watch Jimmy at 1:45. No jealousy, no spite, he's just so happy to be there in that moment. A rare glimse of his stuffy brother letting his guard down and having some fun for once. My headcanon is that Jimmy hit the wrong notes on purpose to coax Chuck into taking over.

I also see in that moment that Jimmy wants to include its brother in its song, he wants to share a great moment. But Chuck prefers to sing alone and takes all the audience's attention. That makes me sad for him despite he doesn't show anything. He is just "oh ! ok..." and moves back :'(
@JordanMgordan
@JordanMgordan 5 жыл бұрын
Having been in that position myself, that definitely strikes me as Chuck letting his ego take over and steal the spotlight. And Jimmy, just wanting to please his brother, takes a step back. He wanted to share this with his brother and his brother still ended up excluding him. He doesn't take it as disrespect though, but instead internalizes it as "I still have to earn his respect". It's part of what makes these shows so great. That's such an identifiable and painful moment, but it's realistically brief.

His pride and ego could not abide any other outcome since the idea of the brother he’d always looked down on being his equal was a concept that disgusted everything he’d built himself up to be. So yes, Chuck was right about Jimmy. But he never for one second entertained the notion that he might be wrong about him when, if he had, things would have been a helluva lot different for them.

I can’t be the only one who finds it BRILLIANT that we spend 3 seasons learning to hate Chuck in his old and bitter state, constantly wondering why on earth jimmy refuses to just cut ties and see the ugliness in him. But the tragic part is how when he finally sees the ugliness and sees Chuck how we’ve been taught to see him, they show us this scene. Now we know why jimmy had so much love for Chuck and put up with him for so long, we see the good side, but now it’s too late. Jimmy has made up his mind and now all the audience can do is sit back and watch in horror as jimmy transcends into Saul Goodman.

I think Jimmy purposefully chose this song, butchered singing it, and dragged Chuck on stage because he knew his brother enjoyed it. Jimmy could tell the moment he told Chuck he passed the bar that he was in some capacity displeased, which we learn is true. But It still mattered to Jimmy to share his joy with him in this moment, and that’s why Jimmy isn’t bothered, and pretends to be flustered when Chuck steals the spotlight. He knew it would make Chuck happy. I bawled at this scene.

Through the 4th season you're along with Jimmy going "yeah, fuck Chuck", but then you remembered how much Jimmy loved him, and you now have proof of at least one moment where Chuck actually loosens up and seals the deal by just taking care of his brother and singing along with him when he's hungover (not just to keep up appearances). This is one of the most essential scenes of the show to me. Rarely has a TV drama delivered such an intricate and thorough portrayal of brotherhood, the love/hate relationship that can spark between two individuals sharing the same blood. You have Jimmy, the extrovert free electron butchering an Abba classic, admiring his big brother and wanting him to come on stage. And you have Chuck, caring for his brother in the toughest way, socially not the funniest lad around, who eventually grabs the mic and gives a stunning rendition, showcasing his razor-sharp perfectionism even in a time of leisure. To have these two end up tipsy-duetting on the same bed, singing themselves to sleep in a rare moment of unity, makes for a memorable scene.

This is still my favorite episode… The detail that Jimmy was singing along with Chuck when he takes over the mic completely, but he doesn’t care and just live in the moment. And the scene ends with “But I was a fool, playing by the rules“ is perfect. He did love Chuck and always looked up to him, maybe even be as good as he was even if he wanted to cuts corners. But Chuck had very different way of loving him back. When Jimmy told Kristy “The winner takes it all“ that’s when everything falls apart in Jimmy and made him (and us) feel like there is no return to his true self if he doesn’t open up about Chuck. I still love Something Stupid, Perfect Day, All Things are Possible, Shared Sentence/Shared Smoke and many more but this is the one that truly made me feel, for lack of a better word, the power of music.

Because it shows what their relationship could have been and was at some point. They both know each others strengths and weaknesses, Chuck is stiff and can´t handle people well, Jimmy lacks discipline and self control. This was at the time where Jimmy worked in the mail room, Chuck had gotten him a position where his impulsiveness could lead to no major problems and where he could keep an eye on that. And it put Jimmy in a prime position to loosen Chuck up and give him enough glimpses into beeing spontaneus that it might actually stick. This was that peak moment where everything could have played out differently and both could have shone bright for the rest of their lives. But it didn´t owed to both brothers faults and thats the sad part.

It's interesting to note who sings which lines from the song and how that line relates to their characters situations.. First thing Jimmy sings alone is, "I don't wanna talk about things we've gone through"Though it's hurting me, now it's history." This relates to Jimmy's feelings towards Chuck. Jimmy wants to get past the previous negativity between them, which goes in hand with his nature of never having consequences for his actions and his tendency to put on a new façade and act like what happened in the past never occurred, and his habit of acting like everything's cool.And the last line, "Though it's hurting me, now it's history." Again, Jimmy is emotional so he still feels hurt from his poor relationship with his brother and then again back to it being history, Jimmy still brushing things under the carpet to take the easy way out. Jimmy then sings, "I've played all my cards and that's what you've done too, Nothing more to say, no more ace to play"This can be Jimmy admitting that he believes they both have seemingly done everything in their power to try and fix their relationship but ultimately they reached a road block on their ability to properly communicate and heal. There are no more "aces" to play, as in their doesn't seem to be any hope for a future reconciliation. Jimmy starts the next verse alone, "I was in your arms" Then Chuck finishes the verse with, "Thinking I belonged there" Figuratively, Jimmy was in Chucks arms by always having to rely on him to help him out of situations. Also since Jimmy is the younger brother, in your arms could be a metaphor for being under the care and supervision of his brother. And maybe at one point when Jimmy was born Chuck did hold him in his arms??? Chuck singing the last bit, "Thinking I belonged there" Perhaps Chuck is telling Jimmy that he felt he had a duty and obligation as a big brother to be there for him to act as a mentor of sorts. "I figured it made sense, building me a fence" - Jimmy Building a fence could be Jimmy starting to come out from under his brothers shadow and building his own future without Chuck."Building me a home." Chuck sings first. Then they both sing "thinking I'd be strong there." Chuck is introverted after his "illness", SO he stays in a nice safe home while Jimmy is more free and comfortable with his fence seeing that there's no home to be confined in. When they both say "Thinking Id be strong there", They both thought that they would be safe, Chuck in his home or Jimmy and his open fence. The real or imaginary confined they put themselves in acts as a defense mechanism to calm any particular anxieties one might be having. "But I was a fool, playing by the rules" Both sang this and its sorta self explanatory. Chuck played be the rules but ultimately ended coming off as a fool with his electricity allergy flip out in court, the Mesa Verde mix up, and in the end, died alone and an unpleasant death aside from all his rules . Now Jimmy relates a little differently about this verse. "But I was a fool, playing by the rules" That's basically Saul Goodmans Motto. Jimmy knows only fools play by the rules when there's an easier and better option against the rules. "The gods may throw a dice, their minds as cold as ice. And someone way down here loses someone dear" This is where Chuck takes over the mic and this ones a sad one. He's talking about his inevitable death that happened the previous season. Jimmy losing someone very dear to him in Chuck.Well hope yall enjoyed, it was fun dissecting this.
