I think Breaking Bad did this well as well, especially in the scene that Walter punched the tissue box in the toilet after he knew that his cancer was getting better. At first watching, it made no sense why he was so angry but after second watching onward, it’s 100% in his character.

i think a golden rule of writing is "give your audience what they want, just not how they expect" and BCS really does an amazing job at twisting our expectations and letting Sauls chaotic actions (and consequences) fuel the drama.

The connection to series finale you did in the video completely shuts down the people who said Jimmy's decision in the finale was dumb... what a brilliantly crafted pool of characters by Gilligan and Gould

The journey of Jimmy McGill was indeed a sight to behold. It was a perfect bittersweet ending that wrapped up the breaking bad universe beautifully. You put my feelings and expectations while watching the show into words; some of which I wasn't even aware of. Awesome review and analysis! Everything you said makes sense!

I love that your initial read of rushed character development in the writing was accurate yet the writers were able to right the ship! It’s impressive the writers organically used chaos in the writing room to pivot Jimmy’s impulsivity into a source of strength empowering Jimmy’s impulsivity to build a strong foundation through logical progression toward “earned” character growth. Thanks for your fascinating character analysis!👏

Great analysis! But for me the ending didn't work so well, because I didn't really get much chemistry between Jimmy and Kim, and the decision to accept perpetual prison seemed too drastic, even for his unpredictable character. Idk, maybe I should watch the finale again and see how it lands the second time.

Thank you, and thanks once more for sharing your thoughts! I get where you're coming from, but I feel like taking the whole series in all at once kind of makes it make sense; I think the fact that I watched this late and had to binge it left all the events fresher in my mind as I went along, and so it felt like it all made sense in the end. I have my own quarrels with the chemistry between Jimmy and Kim, but regardless, for this odd relationship that they do have, this felt like it made sense.

Some people are defeatists. They can’t accept winning. Jimmy was always this.

Yess!! During the entire show Saul annoyed the fuck out of me everytime he was unpredictable. Like he would be on the right path and suddenly he would fuck it up. This video basically said what I always thought but in way I could have never done. Great take on the character.

Don't forget the season 4 finale when Jimmy decides not to read Chuck's letter in front of the bar examiners as he's reading it.

I've never watched this show(despite all my friends screaming at me to do so) but it was fascinating that you breakdown a chaotic unique character. What inspired you to do this vid?

Thanks a bunch, Zach. I'm gonna have to join the hordes screaming at you to watch it lol, you really should. I just finished the show a short while ago and I was really fascinated with how well they wrote Jimmy, a chaotic character that MAKES SENSE, which you don't really see a lot of these days. However, I had had my hiccups with the first season's ending, but seeing the show end, was doubly impressed by how it seemed the writers had course-corrected in a way that made the rush of the first season's finale feel like it make sense. It was all so fascinating to read about and research, and like it had taught me some about writing along the way, which is why I really wanted to share it. Thanks for asking!
