I'm really enjoying these videos. Now, bare with me. I have a Ring alarm system.. I KNOW, I know, it's the worst thing in the universe. I was paying $180 every 2 months for ADT, and the entire Ring package came up on Woot for sale for $180. It's unmonitored so for a single $180 payment I replaced my $180 every 2 months bill. It was easy to set up and it's easy to monitor. One day I might switch to a more, home rolled solution but until then I like watching videos on what I should have done instead.

Simply safe is the worst system you can buy for reference. Also ADT is overcharging all its customers simply because they can just as a result of the name. People buy into the name without ever really researching anything. There is definitely a big difference between a professional alarm and a home install cheap alarm mainly is that one can easily hack anything such a Ring, Simply Safe, etc where a professional system (that has been properly set and programmed) will be near impossible to crack.

Just a note You DO NOT want to use CAT wire for the panel to control board. RS485 does not work well with twisted wires But the main difference between between the cables and normal cat cabling would be the twists. Alarm cabling doesn't come with twisted pairs and is also easier to bend around corners or stick to walls

Watched your Vids, thought it was pretty good. So I decided to swap out my legacy Radionics D2112 and upgrade to the DSC 1832. I also got the expansion module (5400) so I have 16 hard wired zones. I got the Envisalink 4 which is an awesome little add on board. All of my legacy Radionics PIR and Sensors worked just fine. Smoke/Fire is a different story, but they are very old. For a keypad I went with a RFK5500 and a 5501 to replace my legacy keypads. My next and finishing step is to get wireless smoke and a couple of sensors just cause I can with this system. All of this runs to a Rasberry Pi4b running HomeAssistant. Home assistant works flawlessly with this setup and can see all of the sensors. Best of all I can see and run the whole system from my iPhone from anywhere. Oh yeah, I removed the middle man, NO SUBSCRIPTIONS needed, Yeah me! Good recommendation!

If you move into a house (or business) that has one of these systems installed you should definitely invest the time and learning curve to get it up to full function. These were typically built into the house at the time of construction, and retrofitting an existing structure with this layer of security would be very expensive. Despite their "legacy" appearance, these are much more robust and foolproof than today's trendy all-WiFi do-it-yourself kits, which are easily jammed or spoofed by professionals. This is an industrial-grade, pro-build, however the one thing you will definitely want to add is camera support, as these typically did not have them at the time.

Meanwhile when I worked for an alarm company they just installed the end of line resistors in the alarm panel. All of them. Because they were lazy.

yeah, pro tip.. if your alarm panel is that way, scream and yell at your company. it's good to spot the people that actually care this way.

love the ideas presented here and would like to buy a Traditional DSC POWER SERIES (non NEO) system. Are these discontinued? or Where can I get one? Is the Neo able to integrate into Home Assistant?

How do you find the door open/close event speed? Is it near instant? Or is there a little delay before Envisalink picks it up?

If you have more than one keypad, does the wiring from both connect into the same ports in the box? One problem with door sensors is when your cats are smart enough to open the door into the garage.

yes, shared bus. You change the keypad # in the programming, it's pretty easy to do.

Or if you just run a 8/12 core wire to your keypad... you can run a few sensors from your control board through your keypad to the sensors (you don't actually connect all the wires to the keypad but just use the housing to hold the join that then runs to the sensors nearby)

Perhaps I missed the video, but how do you integrate this with Home Assistant? I have an old Power832 in my house and I'd like to map these to Home assistant. I was thinking of scrapping the main board and rewiring all of the sensors to an Arduino Mega with MQTT. Is there a better way to get my hard wired sensors to report to Home assistant? Thanks

One question. Does the rfk5500 handle up to 64 sensors? I think I read that you need the rfk5564 otherwise you are limited to 32 sensors

Are the IMPASSA keypads compatible with the power series?

No, the DSC Impassa keypads are incompatible with the Power Series. But, the 433MHz wireless sensors are compatible between the two systems (if you have a Power series wireless receiver or wireless capable Power series keypad.)

X10 doesn't have a reply function so it just assumes that the message went through. I started using Insteon gear as it makes sure the message was received and processed.

If I hooked this up with the same discipline that I setup the rest of my home automation system I would have a CA certificate not renew and then the fire department would never get called haha. Or it would renew but the fingerprint used for device auth would be based on the old cert not the ca cert and then the same thing would happen.

I was looking to get an old DSC system, but it seems they are quite hard to get here in AT. While looking around the web I stumbled across this arduino based open home security gateway from Czech Republic: openhomesecurity.blogspot.com/p/buy.html?m=1#!/OHS-2-0-4/p/209447163 Couldn't resist ordering one to try. Maybe this could be a great open source altetnative to the name-brand ones? 🤔

Point of note I stopped right when you said not to buy the Neo. The Power series you are showcasing is completely out of date, Neo is the next generation of alarm panel and features are 1000x better than the old last generation PowerSeries. I am a certified technician and have been installing systems for 17yrs+ if you don't understand the technology don't talk about the technology because you are giving much misinformation. There are several key programming sections which will completely lock out a panel from anyone else, a fuse does nothing to stop from being re-programmed. Duress code feature is only available for proper use if actually being properly monitored with an actual alarm company, it cannot just send information over to the police. The installer code is for full programming of the system not the master code. The ADT code as you state is there only if it has already been actively setup for monitoring at some point. If you do not purchase the alpha keypad for this system there is almost no way a standard person would know all the beeps to understand what they are programming.
@Level1Techs
@Level1Techs 3 жыл бұрын
The non neo system is still manufactured in point of fact. Any adt branded panel will have the adt code when you default it with the zone 1/pgm1 code. The reason I don't recommend the neo system is because it's not interoperable which you didn't bother to address in your missive even though I addressed that in the video. That's not "misinformation." And certified by whom? Adt? You sound a bit defensive ;)
